Pre-season. Day 1. November 27

Today's session began this afternoon after an initial miscommunication where I thought it might be this morning. I turned up and Dees were training, so got in contact with someone to get some clarification on the time; which turned out to be arouns 2. They had already started when I arrived. Started at 2 apparantely and I got there at 2:15, after checking out olympic park which was covered in sand -- The beach is coming, it wants its sand back haha.

Players on the track included;

  • Mitchell
  • JDaicos
  • Schultz
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • Carmichael
  • Harry
  • Allan
  • Fin
  • TJ
  • Oscar
  • Ryan
  • Reef
  • Murphy
  • Richards
  • Beau
  • Nick D
  • HH
  • Begg
  • Johnson
  • Dean

+ the train ons.

  • Eyre
  • Sofonidis (41)
  • Bytel (33)
  • Teakle (44)
  • Hustwaite (38)

New numbers:

#8 - Schultz
#12 - Carmichael
#13 - Harry DeMattia
#19 - TJ
#21 - Steene

Nick did some light work along with murphy and a couple others, but he participated in a bit. Did some running sessions. But looked in good shape going into his third pre-season.
Pendles just does what pendles does. No surprise he was there for day 1. I don't remember the last pre-season he wasn't there for the first day. Nobody loves a pre-season like Pendles haha.

The draftees in portions did their own program to one side of the ground, but otherside they participated in a bunch of the session. Probably trying to ease them through it. But they did the drills, some running and some ball work. Harry is tough, a real competitor. TJ is smooth with his movements and skills.

Today really focused on some tackling drills, kicking drill they always do where players are spaced throughout the ground; bit of ball work. A pressure drill split into two teams, some goal kicking and a big runing session that lasted 15 minutes.

There were notable bulk differences. Oscar Steene you could tell right away he had spent the off-season in the gym, his upper body, and his legs look much more musclely and built. They would have worked with him not to bulk up too much too quick, so there must be no issue with restricting his mobility.

Begg and Allan were the other two who look bigger today. Johnson was impressive with his pressure, tackling and running. Even breaking a beau tackle. Which is not easy to do.
Sounds like he has done some work in the off-season. Good to see.

Next up, Wednesday session @ Vic park

Jen you're a real gem! Thanks for these updates. I'd have absolutely no idea what's going on without the effort you put in. Thanks again.

The player we are going to miss next year is Adams. I don't see a second desperate, powerful extractor to complement Mitchell on our list. His passing may have been iffy, but Adams' extraction abilities were high order. Mitchell will have more pressure on him next year without that backup. None of the developing midfielders have shown the ability to get the ball in tight as often as Adams did.

I think we have undervalued him because he telegraphed his passes and had a lot cut off over the years. Sydney will do very well with him.

That clip of Ash breaking a Beau tackle tho!

Agree, he'll be missed, guess that's why we've given Jack Bytel a SSP training slot - as cover for Titch. Already looks like Harry DM will provide some of the leadership that Adams instilled and will hopefully carry on the tradition of the Number 13 jumper - would be nice if Tayz could present the jumper to Harry - guess that won't happen whilst he's at the Swans

Bytel is an interesting selection, based on Hine's statement along the lines of - if you can't run you won't get a game at Collingwood, seems Bytel's weakness is a lack of spread/run. Looks to have the inside game to provide cover for an injury to Titch and that's about it - I like the idea of cover for Titch, as I see Macrae as complimentary to Titch rather than capable of replacing him.
read on Rookieme that Bytel was considered just behind Walsh as a mid, before getting a back injury in his draft year.

We won the prelim and the premiership without him. We are obviously able to cover for him.

for pure power, extraction and aggression Carmicheal can do the job - but would need to improve his disposal to take Tays spot.

Dunno if it’s just the angle of the photo, but it looks like Ed has been skipping leg day in the off season 😂

To be fair, some people just can't grow their legs lol

I have the most chicken of chicken legs you've possibly ever seen in your life and yet no issues leg pressing 300kg at the gym

Yet they refuse to get any bigger no mater what. Just cursed with them.

I will say we didn't really get too much of a chance to see anyone else help out.

Nick's body wasn't ready to go in there full time, we'll probably find he puts some size and hardness into his body and spends way more time there.

Fin was just flat out really never given enough opportunity. Now while I'll openly admit I've been sceptical on him (to say the least), he at least deserves some continuous games to really try and show his wares and establish himself. I feel like it's an opportunity afforded others but not him strangely.

Carmichael similar to Fin. Needs the genuine opportunity.

I'd prefer we actually give the above 3 a real proper chance to show what they can do before worrying we have nothing to replace Adams. Don't forget, part of the reason that Hawthorn midfield brigade is as good as it is is because Mitchell was helping develop them. I'm guessing he's currently doing the same with our young mids

I'm a huge fan of Carmichael. I think he'll be playing a lot of AFL next year. Fin, I'm not so bullish on but at least deserves a string of games so we can see if he's any good.

I read some articles that said the same, was considered a top 10 draft prospect prior to being diagnosed with a bulging disc - missed his first year at the Saints recovering from the operation and then couldn't get in front of Steele and Crouch.

Like, Harrison got a good month long block of games to try and make an impression.

Has Finn ever been given that chance under Fly?

I think we were more in a position to play a pressure forward than we were an inside mid. Fin will get his chance next year

swap the leg press machine for the squat rack. be consistent with it and i guarantee your 'life' will change.

Reef is ready
AJ has higher gears, and its super exciting to see him looking to get there
Dean and Allen will get a run at some stage this year to see how they go

Most of the young ones we retained are starting to look like likely types. I think they really chose the right ones to persist with.
( although Im not so confident with JC. unfortunately)

We really drafted two kids who look well suited to our gamestyle

Id expect Bytel gets a gig with us. Inside mid will increasingly be recognised as a specialist role (like ruck) and some guys are built to play that role only. We can use an extra mature back up in there.

I think if we need a back up ruck we can always take them in the MSD. Dont need to commit to them at this time.

I’d be inclined to think the same way re rucks and Teakle. The curveball comes if we actually decide to play one of Begg or Steene in a key position.

At this stage you’d think Bytel and one of Sofronidis or Eyre would be the favorites.
