That scenario isn’t really comparable though.

It would be more like Neale getting 28 possessions and 15 in the last.

Would it though?

Neale actually got 21 without the tag.

Andrews averaged 14 disposals and 8 marks for the year but managed to get up to 16 and 9 marks with the tag with over half of his stats coming in the last.

Neale getting a tag but still getting more than disposals that he averaged (26) in the year with more than than half coming the last would like 28 and 15.

Billy is a bit predictable here.

Player to bounce back from a tough 2023: Patrick Lipinski

After a strong first season in black and white, Patrick Lipinski regressed in 2023 despite ending the season as a premiership player.

A lot of that must be put down to the fact that he underwent two serious shoulder surgeries in the pre-season, restricting him to just 14 senior games in 2023.

Lipinski has the skills to play AFL footy and the Collingwood coaches seem to love him.

If he gets fit this pre-season and has a good run with injury, there’s no reason why he can’t recapture what he showed in 2022.

Young player to watch: Fin Macrae

It simply must be Fin Macrae time in 2024. The former first-round pick played just one senior game in 2023, taking his overall tally to 12.

Turning 22 at the start of the season, Macrae will have had enough pre-seasons under his belt to make a genuine impact at the AFL level.

He’s dominated VFL footy for two seasons now and is ready to make the step to the next level. The midfielder could even claim Taylor Adams’ spot in the best 22.

Player likely to lose his spot in the 22: Billy Frampton

A bit of a harsh call considering he just became a premiership player, but there doesn’t look to be an obvious spot for Billy Frampton in Collingwood’s best side.

He’s best suited to defence, but Darcy Moore, Nathan Murphy and Jeremy Howe hold those key roles. While up forward and in the ruck he’s a backup option at best.

He’ll still no doubt be a useful player for the Magpies in 2023 due to his versatility, but it would be surprising to see Frampton line up in Opening Round if most of the club’s talls are fit.

Fringe player who will play 15+ games: Ash Johnson

The stage is set for Ash Johnson. After playing 15 games in 2023, kicking 21 goals, Johnson has a real chance to become a full-time member of the side due to Dan McStay’s injury.

The Magpies will need the athletic tall to play alongside Brody Mihocek and consistently perform.

Johnson without a doubt has the talent to make it, perhaps 2024 is the year he delivers on that promise.

I think of it as though Frampton played as a tagger on Andrews. Andrews is a gun, Frampton did his job and was able to curtail his influence for three quarters, and then Andrews started to get off the chain in the last and Frampton spent more time on the bench.

Frampton mostly did his job, Andrews is a terrific player and we quelled his influence for the majority of the game.

If it was Macrae coming in and playing as a tagger on Neale for the entire game, and kept him to 18 touches (let’s say 6 in the last) you’d say he went ok and helped the team get the W in a mostly forgettable performance.
That’s exactly right about Billy. Plus they only had a week to plan and execute. Great result under the circumstances.

Predictable enough though given his Steve Bradbury premiership fame. He will only be in the team if enough tall players succumb to injury.
Yeah. While he is good depth, unlikely he is a first choice defender and you wouldn't use him forward. But good depth given his versatility.

I think we all know the situation with frampton. I dont have to read 200 articles from blokes getting a dollar a word to rehash predictable crap. The real question is whether he can transfer the confidence that he showed in the ruck this year to a backline position.
The funny thing is anyone with an IQ in double figures could tell Frampton was given a specific role that he stuck to, albeit a little too tunnel visioned, and did admirably for 3 quarters. These goldfish memoried oppo supporters wouldnt acknowledge the jobs he did throughout the year in the ruck specifically. With a full pre season training for a set position he’ll be a much better player this year anyway.

He did ok in something that he wasn't practised in. He was surprisingly good in the ruck earlier in the year. He might find a role.....he might not.

There were a lot of people, including myself, who were predicting that nathan murphy would fade away. He has been a different player since he got some confidence. However, that doesnt mean the same is going to happen to frampton.

I can sort of understand why people want to predict these things because they like talking footy, but they should realise that life is complicated

Nobody is suggesting he didn't do his blanketing job in the GF. But he is not a premiership quality player in the sense that he would be a first choice KPP or even 2nd choice on a week to week basis. As you say, he did OK when played in the ruck and in his first game against Richmond, but he has been in the AFL system for years and has spent time at two other clubs that have ultimately delisted him.

Give credit where it's due, but let's not pretend that he is going to come back next year a far more accomplished player. He is there to fill gaps, which our injury record suggests we are inevitably able to create. He is most unlikely to come back next year a 'much better player than this year'. He is far more likely to be the Frampton of 2023, with the same limited strengths and shortcomings.

Now it's back to the bowl where I would be more than happy to secrete myself through the duration of Xmas day.

As a ruck and forward he was a State League player. If required as a defender, and he manages to string a run of games together, he may prove to be AFL standard as a backman.

Like all players outside our top 12/15 - he will be trying to make every post a winner during preseason, get a run in the practice matches and retain his spot heading into the season proper.

Frampton cost us pick 52 this draft, a pick we were never going to use.

He was good as a ruck, ok as a backman and played a role that helped win us the grand final.

He is a bargain along with Bobby Hill at pick 43.

Yet on his 2022 form where he averaged 18 touches at CHB he is actually a disppointment.

There is no doubt he has a higher ceiling than most Pies fans realise but it is a challenge to bring it out given he has only had one season where he played at a high level

I'm not sure if he was a disappointment at the crows. I think his 2022 form wasn't bad for a guy who has only played a handful of games. He stayed in the adelaide team for 6 consecutive games until round 8. He even kicked a goal in that last game so who knows where he played. He got 108 disposals across those games..

He averaged 70 fantasty points in that 6 game stretch and 50 points this year......interesting no?

And then he didnt play another game.

I have suspicion that the word was out that he was interested when the pies approached his manager. I'm just guessing.

At the very least, Frampton gives us options - particularly down back. That alone makes him a good recruit.
Bobby H is on a different level entirely for our recruiting dept though. Our group of small & medium options up forward is superb now with Shultz joining.

Billy’s a Good back-up swing man and was an important member of the squad over the season. IMO. Could still be a late bloomer and improve over the next couple of years to be a best 23 regular. I think it will be in the ruck and down back though. Probably not on even average AFL money though so really useful guy to have there.
