USA 2024 US Presidential Election: Trump vs Harris (pt II)

In that case do you think perhaps the Trump campaign could condone the joke instead of seemingly pretending the comedian just snuck up on stage unannounced?

Perhaps Trump could actually be a leader, take a modicum of responsibility and apologise?
The oraginizers already had pulled an even more vulgar joke so they knew what was going to be said . This joke was just one of many racist ,sexist , religious comments and jokes said by acolytes of Trump

It’s so very American to let all those racist, sexist jokes in and draw the line at a swear word

No you dont get it. Your hatred of Trump blinds you to the fact that yes it was about Trump's wall but the punchline was about Mexicans being 'thieves'.

It's truly astounding you cant see that.

And yes the Puerto Rico joke was bad and getting a roast comedian on who deals in offence was a really poor choice.

Jokes only work if people understand the punchline and I doubt many don't know that Puerto Rico has a huge landfill problem after having to clean up after consecutive disasters. I didnt know and most people still don't which is what makes it such a bad ill-timed joke.

Maybe both jokes have a place somewhere but not at political rallies.
The mexicans being thieves is not the butt of the joke though. They are the ones benefiting from free building material.
Mind I also didn’t complain about the PR joke either, so may just be my threshold?

Well, I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again....

It doesn't matter who wins or loses next week, the damage to the US is done.

"The figures reflect the contrasting public stances of the candidates towards the electoral process. While Harris had declared she has confidence, Trump has stoked baseless claims about voter fraud, while suggesting he could only lose if there was cheating.

He has also given deliberately vague responses to questions about whether he would accept the result, saying he would do so if the poll was “free and fair”.

His posture has fuelled fears of a reprise of his refusal to accept his 2020 loss to Joe Biden, when he tried to stop the certification of the results in Congress and inspired a violent mob to attack the US Capitol.

In a somewhat contradictory finding, the survey found that Trump outscored Harris, 43% to 40%, on which candidate was trusted more to protect democracy."

Those are swing state numbers btw.

There's a great deal being made of insulting commentary from both sides.

The country who's "democracy" has been lauded, championed and exported (often militarily) is hanging by a thread.....and most of the commentary revolves around the choice of language made by candidates or their representatives....it would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.

Fast forward 12 months from now......what does the US look like? If the Democrats win next week, and make it to the January investiture, does anyone genuinely think all of these Republican MAGA fanatics will just disappear quietly and accept their "struggle" is over?

Likewise if Trump wins....what does the US constitution, as a day to day example of executive power, buttress and support?

We cannot simply ignore the vast divide that now exists in the US....it isn't going to just disappear of it's own accord. There has to be a plan to remedy the underlying issues - and I strongly doubt that doing so is in the policy mandate of either party.

Much like how the democrats are trying to brush off and ignore Biden's offensive remarks.
All political parties do it to a certain degree. What Biden said was a gaffe and not ok. However the mental gymnastics used on a daily basis due to what spews out of Trump's mouth is shocking. Trump is on tape saying he's allowed to sexual assault anyone he likes...I mean c'mon let's put Biden's remark in the context of 2024.

You guys got me thinking about compulsory voting. I don't think that would work in the US unless there was a serious paradigm shift in how the entire country goes about elections. First, it would have to be federally controlled, with paid time off work or a holiday in order give so many different people the ability to go vote. Probably more voting locations and options. Enforcement, no idea.
That's just off the top of my head.
My first thought though was the Republicans would never, ever permit it. They hate how many voters there are already.
How does it work in Aus?
The vast majority of voting locations in Oz are public schools. No clash because voting is always on a Saturday.

That seems to get the job done pretty much. You guys have an impressive network of public schools.

As others have pointed out, the whole thing is politically very difficult (as I never tire of pointing out, one of the few instances of Trump telling the certified truth was when he told fellow Republicans “if they make it easier for more people to vote we’ll never get in again”) but it’s clear that things have to change.

Getting upset after being called garbage by the President = snowflake
If they’re supporting Trump, they’re someone who is a liar and a cheat.

The English language just isn’t flexible enough to find any other way of describing them. Sorry.

Maybe we should all learn French because everyone says it’s capable of far more nuance than English, but until then, if someone supports a liar and a cheat, they have to be held accountable in the official language.
