AFLW 2025 AFLW season - Geelong & the greater league...

Remove this Banner Ad

I'm well aware we've still got a couple of weeks left in season 2024, but unlike what we saw ahead this season it would seem that the powers to be decided it's a good idea to get their act together when it comes to season 2025

And as such, we've already been presented with the following information which is a clear step in the right direction - and a good starting point for this thread

The current seasons thread will stay open for chat/discussion about this season including the remaining finals - hoping the two threads don't confuse folks

From the above article:

The start of pre-season will be Monday, May 19, while the Grand Final will be played on Saturday, November 29, the same weekend as this year's night edition.

This year the pre-season started June 3rd and we know we didn't have everyone available:
- Kate Kenny arrived the week starting 10 June, I'm basing that on the following from an article on 19 June;
"It's coming up to a week now since I arrived, it is probably a little bit colder than I thought it was going to be but it has been really nice,” Kenny said.
“I got to go to our camp over the weekend and it was nice to get to know everybody, it has been really good so far.

- Moloney & Kennedy were still playing Gaelic football on the 18th June

Talking with Moloney after our last match, she said that since she first arrived in Geelong last year she's had a total of 2 weeks off from her sporting commitments; 1 week after last years AFLW season finished & before Gaelic commitments started, and then 1 week between seasons this year

Moloney will be the one most impacted by the season start date being bought forward and it'll be interesting to see what this means in terms of that 3 year contract we've offered her - can we offer her a contract that she can earn a living from if she opts to take that path?

- Lastly, Kearns potentially lives out here; there's a number of "training" photos from Jan, March & April in which she features and one of them is a marking contest between housemates

An earlier start and less shit schedule helps

This is insane. Runner-up in the last two Richmond B&Fs traded out for the 18th pick? Richmond got screwed in that trade while the strongest team in the league just got stronger.

If i was a tin foil hat type i would claim that the 2 clubs came to a deal in which Richmond got to screw the North mens team in exchange for the reverse happening in the womens.

It's interesting, I've read a few comments from North fans and they actually aren't happy with the trade, they think she's excess to their needs & isn't in their best team

I'm curious what exactly would have been in this for us or what we were willing to part with

Another attempt at Harris trade falls over

THE LATEST trade proposal for Tayla Harris has fallen over, leaving the Melbourne forward's move to Hawthorn in jeopardy of collapsing with just over two hours remaining in the window.

West Coast and Geelong both got involved in discussions around a potential four-club trade to unlock Harris' move, though talks were unable to progress throughout lunchtime as the situation got more complex.

Did I read that right? She is only 22? Is she a playing coach?

Yep, just 22

I haven't seen any mention of her playing, but Krock has provided more info here:

She joined AFL Barwon club Grovedale in 2022 and, as co-coach, guided the Tigers to their maiden Division 1 premiership this year.

Hassett and colleague Paul Price were named joint coaches of the AFL Barwon Team of the Year and Female Football Coach of the Year at the AFL Barwon Community Awards.

More on Tipping, thanks Krock

However, Geelong won out after Tipping visited with five clubs, signing her to a three-year deal.

“All the clubs, in their own way, were absolutely brilliant; It’s nothing like I’ve ever seen before,” she said.

“There was just something that I connected to at Geelong which made me feel drawn to them, and perhaps it was just the culture and the people, and it was just an easy pick in the end, I think.”

Thanks I thought we may have had more.
Following the AFLW Trade Period, Geelong will hold picks 9, 16 and 37 heading into Monday’s Telstra AFLW Draft.
We had 4 delistings.
Plummer
McDonald
Fuller
Pearce
(Not to mention Hoare)

And we traded Moloney

Anna-rose Kennedy on inactive list

Tipping in

So we should have more then 3 draft picks

Need to slightly adjust the delistings - it's only 3

When Fuller was announced as inactive we signed Pearce as a replacement player; if Fuller was to return we would have needed to open a spot

When Hoare announced her retirement, we signed Thorne as a replacement player

Our delistings become:
Plummer
McDonald
Pearce/Fuller (one spot)

Moloney traded
Amber-Rose Kennedy inactive

Tipping in

At the moment it's 5 out with 1 in, and maybe we have another Irish player in the wings to sign

Spot on again. Should never doubt you.

Thanks for that.. it's hard to workout how many with train-ons, inactive, replacements and delistings lol no retirements this year.

Will be interesting to see what we do at the draft. There will be some very good mids around 9 and 16 but I also think we really need to take a good kpd (in particular) or a ruck with one of our picks.
