Foxtel & TV dollars

At the same time though, why couldn't this be shown on Foxtel?

A few folks on X were asking that too, considering Foxtel was given $40 million to cover more women's sport.

I think 37 is a bit early for piper (to me she's a late/rookie pick) but it fills an obvious need and we clearly didn't want to risk any other club taking her as an injury replacement etc. Given our ruck stocks she's every chance of being our starting ruck for 2025 (unless tipping adapts very quickly).

To be honest if we were always going to take a mature ruck with our 3rd and last pick then the trade to move our 20s picks up to 16 and take piper with the later pick makes more sense.

In case anyones wondering if we were going to address our lack of height issues & positional needs tonight...

When your rucks are Darby (no offence to Kate she's a warrior but she's almost done) and a volleyballer who hasn't played yet this pick makes sense.

Darby is one of those heart & soul type players, and she's genuinely the most generous player I've seen wearing the hoops in terms of giving her time to the fans, kids & adults alike - it's not as simple as signing a few autographs, but asking your name & using it, chatting about where "you" play etc & in a manner where you know her attention is with the person/s she's chatting with and not just going through the motions

But we asked her to play out of position this year and it just didn't do her any favours - if we have other options available to play as our #1 ruck, it'll benefit the team & Darby likely can still play a role in the team but more as a support player across the field

Irish player? Unless we are keeping a spot open in case Anna Rose comes back maybe?

I reckon an Irish player

Unless we use that open spot as a SSP type option and see who impresses during the VFLW & training sessions

Maybe we passed on our last pick because Sydney took our other VFL ruck with pick 60. Hadn't seen her play but maybe the plan was to take both

100 % love Kate as a person just one of the best you will meet.
But she's slowing down a fair way and asking her to carry the ruck every week doesn't work. I'd still have preferred we traded in a ready-made ruck but at least we brought in a couple of options.

Maybe although I'd be surprised if we took both.

For those wondering about Alexis - seems we've definitely targeted a known gap in our list:

ALEXIS GREGOR

Position: Key forward/defender
Height: 181cm
From: Victoria, Bendigo Pioneers/Moama

Has done the hard yards over the past few years, travelling from Echuca to Bendigo for her footy. Last year was a write-off with two bulging discs in her back, but has rebounded well, and built into her season. Strong overhead and in one-on-one marking contests.

Where could she go?

A lot of clubs are keen on Gregor in the 10-20 mark, with Richmond, Fremantle and Geelong all being tied to the Pioneer, more so for her defensive potential than forward prowess.

Hmmmm, Bendigo Pioneers. have we ever had anything good from them before? 🤔 😀
