2025 lets have a look you bloody bastards

Bumping this because not sure where else it's discussed but with all trades almost completed and us linked to basically no one, going to be an interesting year next year.

We won't see Lefau or Young until mid year so hoping first half of the year guys like Gibcus, Gray and Blight are going to be playing regular football.

Our smalls such as Smith, Campbell and Green should have better tanks than the new draftees so might see some early games too. Hard to put together much of a best 22 at this stage because of not knowing who we are getting. It's going to be list that is going to be so unproven.

In the absence of new blood in the ruck surely this is noahs chance to come in as regular relief ruck

We might get 4-5 picks in the top 10-12. Will we look at trading Lynch?
Last 5 seasons pick 1 has been ready made and a bit of a weapon. Eg Daicos, Sheezel, Ashcroft, Reid, Horne Francis. We need to nail this one to strengthen the midfield straight away. Hopefully our next pick is a bit of a midfield gun to. I think our third pick needs to be a smaller half back/wing type who can help fill the void Rioli left. If we can nail 3 gems we can be competitive next year with half a dozen wins. Will be fun to see the team develop. I wouldn’t mind O’Brien from Crows as ruck depth as well. If our over 28s happened to get injured we’d look something like

Green Lefau Rioli
Mansell Balta Bauer
Clarke Taranto Campbell
Trezise Miller Smith
Banks Gibcus Brown
Oreilly Hopper Ross
Pick 1, Pick 4, Mcauliff Ralphsmith

I’d make Vlaustin captain as well

Did a team excluding any potential draftees, and the team looks half decent. We might be more competitive than anticipated in 2025 but as ever it truely is reliant upon the health of Prestia and Lynch.

Then remember that:
Lefau is out until probably mid-year.
Lynch & Prestia are both extremely injury-prone.

Opens doors for Gray, Miller, McAuliffe etc

Interesting task. I’ll have a go.

B: Short, Miller, Broad
HB: Vlaustin, Balta, Banks
C: Ralphsmith, Taranto, Ross
HF: Rioli, Gibcus, Browne
FF: Greene, Lynch, Campbell
R: Nankervis, Hopper, McAuliffe
Int: Bauer, Greene, Prestia, Mansell.

We should really have a ruck on the interchange bench. Bauer can develop into our CHF, he can mark, goes into contests and has a sweet boot as well

Under 25 best 22

B: Trezise, Gibcus, Blight
HB: Brown, Balta, Smith
C: HRS, Ross, Banks
HF: Campbell, Bauer, MRJ
F: Mansell, Kozi, Green
R: Ryan, Sonsie, McAuliffe
Int: Clarke, Gray, Fawcett, OHB, Dow*, Cumbo*, Coulthard*

Backline looks pretty neat with Miller (25) and Young (26) also available as KPD’s. We should look at getting at least one mid/small defender in this draft.

Forward line looks pretty weak at this stage. No standout talls with 4 in the side and Lefau (26) as another option. Solid group of hard working small forwards but no standout from a goal scoring perspective. We should be looking to add another KPF and small/mid forward in the draft + midfielders that can go forward.

Midfield looks very weak on-ball. Ross and McAuliffe the only two that give you any confidence of becoming solid AFL midfielders. Dow may not even be on the list and it could be Sonsie’s last year at the club if he doesn’t show more. Wingers on the other hand look promising with both HRS and Banks looking more likely than not. There’s also potential support from the likes of Campbell, Clarke and MRJ who could all find themselves further up the ground on the wing. With our desperate need for on-ballers we should be drafting no less than 3 but preferably 4-5. As some of these players will spend time on the wing early in their career, we won’t need to add anymore wingers to our stocks.

Ruck with big Sammy G Ryan and OHB. No confidence in either player at this stage. We could bring in a young ruck to develop with the team like Dodson or we could simply get a mature back-up and look to trade for a decent one in the future if needed.

Overall, how do we look?

Our young group above would likely be smashed every week. However, that would mainly be due to the lack of midfield talent/depth and scoring forwards. The rest of the team on paper looks very promising. With 8-10 more senior players to slide into that team our injury-free best 22 has the potential to be quite competitive.

I love the narrative that we are just starting the rebuild now …. it’s not correct in the slightest. That’s the impression people have as a lot of our talented youth haven’t ‘popped’ yet, due to injury, opportunity, late development, professionalism etc….

Of course majority of our current crop of under 24yo won’t become A-graders, but I guarantee at least 3 of them will.

By A-grade I’m talking as good or better than the likes Grimes, Prestia, Edwards, Vlastuin, Houli … I’m not talking Uber elite like Dusty, Cotchin, Jack, Rance etc….although I do think at least one of our current youngsters will get close to Uber elite level.

So there’s a lot of assumptions we don’t have any A-grade youth right now and we are solely reliant on upcoming drafts, but A-graders will emerge from our current youth because history from forever says it will.

Look at the example of A-graders or those close to it from across the comp - a high percentage weren’t tracking towards A-grade status early in their careers and you’d never have predicted it…:

Dylan Moore
Newcombe
Brent Daniels
Willem Drew
Sinclair
Flanders
Waterman
Treacy
Dale
J Clark
Miers
Idun
Sicily
Aliir
Collins
Scrimshaw
Z Guthrie
Buckley
Battle
Wilkie

The list goes on and on.

So the fact we have 15 players under 25yo with 17+ games is huge. Hawks also have 15. GC have 15. Eagles have 13. Roos have 11. . (Pies have 6. Blues have 9. Cats have 8.)

This is why I don’t believe we are in for 5+ years of pain. When we get a decent number of our youth develop into A-graders or close to it… which history says they will.. we will ‘pop’ big time.

I hate to say the Cats are a good example … a couple of years back in 2021 it looked like their ONLY quality youth was Henry and Parfitt.

Since then we’ve seen a heap of their players who were on the list in 2021 but yet to emerge (in fact some of them looked completely useless) become very good to excellent players :

Z Guthrie
Miers
Close
SDK

Then there’s other quality youth they’ve added in the space of 3 x years for a single top-20 pick:

Holmes
Stengle
Dempsey
O Henry

And even spuds like Bowes are playing terrific footy.

So whether it’s Campbell, Brown, MRJ, Gibcus, Banks, Clarke, Smith, Green, Bauer or someone else from the clouds … there WILL be A-grade players emerge that nobody would be predicting right now.

We started rebuilding 3-years ago. People will realise this in 2026 when we’ve bounced back 3 x seasons earlier than anticipated.

I completely agree.

We really have no gauge of how good or bad the team would’ve been this year if not for injuries. We started the year on the back foot with multiple players getting injuries in the lead up to the season, and then the injury nightmare began.

We have definitely lost some real quality players but what if our full strength team was finals quality this year? Does the loss of 4-5 best 22 players mean we immediately drop to dead last.

A lot of players gained valuable experience this year which can only be a good thing for next year. They also believe a lot of these early draft picks will be able to slot straight in at AFL level.

One other thing I think people have really overlooked is how depleted our midfield was this year. Both the games we won Taranto played. Neither Hopper or Taranto played in our absolute drubbings in the middle of the season, or Ross for that matter. If we can get 70+ games out of Ross, Taranto, Hopper and Prestia next year it will go a long way towards us being competitive.

This time of year 18 clubs are optimistic but when Carlton wipe the floor with us in round 1 by 50+ points, our challenge will be how we hold the line and our patience.

The media will be loving our floggings and they'll want our club to implode.

B: Z.Uwland J.Gibcus H.Oliver
HB: T.Travaglia N.Balta L.Jacques
C : X.Lindsay T.Taranto FOS
HF : T.Gross H.Armstrong J.Bauer
F : MRJ T.Lynch Lalor
R Nank Jagga Langford
IC Tauru K.McAuliffe T.Brown N.Vluastin

If they start the year with Hopper, Taranto & Prestia all playing in the same midfield then we are in for another wasted year. Change that mix and at least we will be developing a midfield that is balanced.
