Battle is a good player. Albeit an undersized key back.
Played mostly as a third tall with us. Wilkie and Howard were usually taking the main key forwards. Battle would get one time to time if they were a more mobile type like Cameron.

Neither are exactly like Stewart. Battle is better intercepter than Bergman though. Bergman is a fair way down the order in terms of intercept defenders.

Again with the "let him walk" talk. The bloke left because Horx had a creche and his brand new wife told him to.

He left for less dollars because he and his missus wanted to wear colours that matched their kid’s soiled diapers 🟡

"You want to go to a club where you think you have a chance of having success, and it's hard to go to StKilda and think you have a chance of having success" said one industry figure. "There are not many clubs out there where you would think you have less of a chance. They don't have a great core of young talent to build around and it's like what am I going for apart from money? There is literally no reason."

Yikes, if that's the actual view across the industry we are really on the dog heap. Not sure how they can be so wrong, we clearly have a good core of young talent based on four good years of drafting. This year is exceptionally important, we need NAS, Owens, Windhager, Lou, Wilson, hopefully Trav and Tauru and maybe even King if he can ever get on the park to change perceptions of the club.
It's 50/50
In one hand it's historically correct and fits the narrative.
On the other hand it's untrue and doesn't fit the narrative.

In the media, narrative will always trump the truth 100% of the time.

If we threw $1.7 million at Finn Callaghan, surely we aim a $1.8 million-a-season contract at Butters.

Essendon seem like the only club who could compete at that coin, and they seem to be focused on Harley Reid.

And possibly Richmond too with available salary cap space.
what are we giving NAS?

Sounds like it'll be a very exciting off-season.

Going off the media vibe and what some have posted it seems likely we'll retain NWM.

Those likely arrivals are all good but still lack a mid, hopefully we keep seeing the emergence of our young mids.

extending on this

MIDWEEK TACKLE

Players concerned about being "the man" w.r.t money AND historical success of club

Current targets (gone very hard):
LDU
TDK ("how do I resist that offer")
Aleer ($900k)
Bergman (as a mid; wants to prioritise family over footy)

Latter 3 a "really good chance"

------
Other reports:

  • Matchday concierge for families
  • Pitch Ross as father figure
  • Integrate families to whole club picture
  • Aim to be #1 First Nations team
  • Source best players from Ireland

Josh Battle was a massive wake-up call
-------
Tobie Travaglia and Hugh Boxshall in the frame for debuts this week

Trav & Tauru will re-sign beyond draftee contracts

Would be surprised if NWM left St Kilda. We are NOT offering him the money that would suggest he is the best player at the club yet
Would be surprised or would not be surprised? We going to let him leave?

I said he isn’t a back pocket like Jimmy Webster.

And quite frankly. We don’t have a Tom Stewart type and we haven’t since Sam Fisher.

Aleer and Caminiti playing tall back. Allows Wilkie to play the Hudghton 2004/5 role of tall or small.

Allows Bergman to sag off the high half forward as an interceptor and play l midfield minutes. Like Stewart right now.

Allows Tauru a few years to develop into his body and play third tall.

Allows us to finally look at Nas or sincs permanently up the field.

Allows Tauru or Caminiti to swing forward.

I'd say that he's nothing like Tom Stewart either. TS is usually played as a spare across HB and chops off multiple entries through superior marking and reading of the ball in flight. If he plays outside that he plays on ball. Bergman is closer to Nas than TS. Josh Battle was the closest thing we had to a interceptor since Fisher.

Bergman is a mid sized rebounder. I can't see him playing as an inside on-baller. As a running past type out on a wing or outside centre bounces he might contest a few but really struggle to see how he's all of a sudden develop a midfield game.

I don't mind chasing him but his name should be nowhere near Nas's. He's a good player, but he doesn't obviously shift the needle.

He's alright but id rather get Maynard for free and add that aggression to the backline.

TDK and Maynard for me. Whilst keeping our first rounder

I mentioned Maynard as a bit of a joke the other day but there is a bit of noise that the Pies don't think they'll be able to keep him. If you didn't go absolutely mental on his wage he'd actually be a pretty good get.

It's the view of an 'AFL Insider' aka the journo's opinion.
When they wanted a real route they used Mick Maguane.

We will know a lot more by the end of the season. Phillipou and then a pile of young mids could change the needs pretty quickly. If Phillipou comes back like he did after his Sandy stint you'd be thinking that we have a pretty good set up. Even guys like Dow in reserve give us a bit of solid depth. Mids shouldn't be hard to find, we just made it hard by not being able to draft them under Trout.

We ****ed him around and were happy to dangle him to get compo back....then tried to reverse the damage already done.

We were like a bloke that tells his wife that we should have a break so he can go root around....then doesn't get any offers, tries to go back to the wife who's off partying and she's lost interest. Offering trips overseas and a new car but that horse had bolted.

Fruity story, as always x

Yeah, no

We need to get Nas signed up on a long contract if possible.

It's all well and good to being throwing big money at players from other clubs, but how many Nas's have we had come along in the last 15 years? Lock him in.

Imagine what wage we'd be offering him if we were trying to lure him from another club.

Pay the man.
Absolute no brainer.
Would be horrified if the club was considering anything different.
