It wont be long until the 2025 kicks off and we will start to see areas of improvement or development required for our list.

The first thing is perhaps to look at our aging players and get a feel on what are peoples thoughts on how long they will go on for and whether they need immediate replacement.

31/32 this year - Webster, Hill, Wood
30/31 this year - Jones, Sinclair, Macrae, Marshall, Steele
29/30 this year - Howard, Wilkie

I think most should be able to continue to play at the level until 33-34 years old.

For me the next list hole that will require filling will be to find a replacement for Howard. A player capable of playing on and shutting down the moster forwards. The club might see Barrat 194cms as that player moving forward, but ideally it would be nice to have another near 200cm big bodied tall key defender to slot in. Caminiti 196cms is an unknown? Shoenmaker 194cms is more a Wilkie replacement and will be given time to develop his defensive game. Tauru 193cms is long term no matter where he plays.

It will be interesting to see how the prospective midfield options evolve this season. I think we can suggest Phillipou, Windhager, Wilson, Garcia and Henry (pinch hitting) will all become genuine AFL midfielders. It would be nice to see a future in Hall, Carroll, Boxshall, Travaglia, Said during the year. We know what we are going to get from players like Clark, Byrnes, Jones, Dow etc.

The obvious list delisting at seasons end is Cordy, how he got a 3 year contract out of the club is questionable. A number of players are out of contract at years end and some will be looking for new clubs next year, thats just the AFL industry.

So for me our shopping list at seasons end is firstly a high end quality free agent if we can attract one eg LDU, TDK or similiar. If not then look at a more mature key defender in the Leek Aleer 194cms GWS mould and continue to add quality via the draft.

Great post, and agree with the Howard reasoning. It's a big reason I thought Balta should have been our number 1 RFA target next year:

1. He gets thrown around, when we could sell and settle him down back.

2. Richmond are in rebuild mode and would 100% take the draft pick.

Sadly, he re-signed over the break on a long term deal. He would be the perfect KPD to build your defence around.

A fair bit to play out on this one.

Wouldn't be surprised to hear Andrew Brayshaws name getting mentioned later in the year as part of a trade.

He's not happy with the offers in front of him and the Saints are offering a huge amount of cash.

Could see how the headlines could have been….

ST KILDA PLAYER UP ON ASSAULT CHARGES

With the media taking their usual pot shots at us.

Brayshaw’s agent getting him another 200k.

I wonder if Chad Warner and/or Kasiah Pickett come into calculations here. If Freo are going hard at either or both they are going to need $$$ salary cap and picks.

It might just be that Brayshaw becomes the expendable midfield commodity? Something will have to give at Freo's end.

You know who would be the perfect fit for our list now is Patrick Voss. The player I was screaming for the club to take as an SSP at the start of last year, instead they recruited Bonner. HTF did that go, now we desparately need another tall key positional player. Even with Battle in the side we were one injury away from a problem and now it has hit two fold and the club are not prepared for it.

Voss is not a super star but had played at CHB has plenty of game sense and would have been the perfect tall swingman. Freo tried him at CHF but IMO best position is CHB and he would have been perfect for us. Bonner was another short sighted recruiting decision by the club and as it has turned out one that was very poor.

Rowell and Anderson were recruited together by GC because they were best buds and to stop the go home factor.
Rowell now talking to Geelong and others.
How goes Tweedledee goes Tweedledum.
How long before Anderson does the same thing?
Or, will it all happen in house.🗣️

I was told by someone who coached them, they are very different with different priorities. Anderson is all business and about building the brand. Will most likely stay as a GC poster boy. Rowell is footy mad and just wants to win. A big chance to come back to Melbourne. Gubby definitely been in his ear.
