I feel like the Bergman noise is just grooming everyone if Nas decides to leave. I dont see both of them being at St Kilda next year, either Nas stays and Bergman plays elsewhere (either stays or gets traded somewhere else), or Nas decides he wants to go to Port, then Bergman makes up part of that deal - Port dont have a first round pick this year.

Bergman for us would be pretty low on the list of priorities as a stand alone aquisition.

$1.7M BLUES STAR IN BIGGEST ‘DEAL OR NO DEAL’ SINCE ABLETT

There’s little secret burgeoning superstar Tom De Koning has much to consider amid a looming contract call, and the Blues’ worrying 0-3 start to the season has done little to make that decision easier.

The offer currently on the table from St Kilda is reportedly $1.7 million per season over seven years, with the 25-year-old slated for restricted free agency at season’s end.

Chief Herald Sun footy reporter Jay Clark said of the Saints’ pursuit: “They’re going to try and throw as much cash at Tom De Koning as they can possibly muster.”

David King says it’s brought about the biggest stay-or-go conundrum involving a star of the game since the ‘Little Master’ dropped everything in 2010 and leapt at a $9 million deal to move to Gold Coast.

“I wouldn’t say money’s more important than loyalty, but at the same time, you know, money is a big part of why I’ve moved but it’s not the only reason,” Ablett said in September 2010.

“I don’t think there’s a person in the world who would begrudge him leaving,” King began on Fox Footy’s Super Saturday Live.

“I mean, this is the biggest game of ‘deal or no deal’ the AFL’s had for years — since Gary Ablett had the opportunity to go to the Suns by comparison of what Geelong was offering to keep him at home.

“(It’s) not very often you get the chance to play for a really big club. They are a sleeping giant, Carlton, that really need to launch into their next premiership success … and (De Koning) is such an important part of that.

“Whatever the gap is in the money (negotiations), if he wins a premiership at Carlton, his legacy but also his marketability at the Carlton Football Club will be miles ahead of what it would be at the St Kilda Football Club. I think he should definitely stay.”

Jack Riewoldt is a ****ing idiot lol, how are Carlton a sleeping giant.

It was the one draft where I think they genuinely might have got enough to do it. Simms, Trainor, Armstrong and Faull could all of gone in the first round in a shitter draft. Trainor looks very good already, Faull and Armstrong both genuine key forwards and Simms a hybrid tall forward.

On paper it looks like an absolute dream haul.
Loaded with risk too. I was a huge fan of Trainor, but unless the reporting is wrong he’ll always be at risk. Who knows on Hotton now, full of flash, let’s see on the rest. I personally wasn’t a fan of what they did in the slightest.

And they need to fill a team full of quality players. They are us in about 2014, albeit greater access to very high draft picks. But it’s the number of players to fill a good team that’s incredibly underrated because while the youngsters are developing good players are retiring at the other end. That will be their one bulk draft and they’ll have to hit on 5 or 6 because draft picks won’t be floating around like confetti (absolutely granted that they will have two high picks this year).

I reckon they'll get a minimum of two gun talls from the 4. Lalor already looks a gun they also got the other big viking Smilie and Hotton. It was an incredible draft to get access to. I think they got Alger too.

Lol, that same argument could be used to move here - being a centre piece of St Kilda's first flag in 60+ years, a club that has a largely dormant fan base would also catapult his marketability. Sure we're not as big as Carlton, but if we do win a flag, the gap on that marketability metric isn't as big as Jack makes out

And yes, going with history - the chances of winning a flag here aren't great, but they're no worse than Carlton ATM the way things are going

Fair's fair. Carlton have been a wet bag of shhhyte for so long that sometimes it's easy to forget, but they have a lot of supporters and if the Blue ever started actually convincing their supporters that they were a big time team again, then we'll see the obnoxiousness return in record numbers.

May it never happen in my lifetime.

And as sh1t as they have been they will have 80,000 + people at the G Thursday

I reckon we should trade King to Brisbane to replace Daniher.
What do you reckon?

Considering his genetic copy is probably the favourite for the Coleman, I'd say thats a shocking call.

Just give him time to get right. I'd imagine the coaches are in his ear giving him a pump up after watching what his brother is doing.

Nah reckon it's a good call. He is constantly injured and is unrealised potential. Could be a great win win for both clubs.

A 7 foot blonde guy with a headband holding up the cup in a stKilda jumper would be iconic. Extremely marketable. Reiwoldt has no idea and is just an ex footy player - not a marketing genius. Seriously some of these ex players need a reality slap .
He’s tough to listen to. I thought the moron ex players land at ch 7?

Of course you think its a good call, otherwise you wouldn't have suggested it. If we were to ever do it, we'd want something pretty serious coming back the other way.
It won't happen as the club will persist and have signed him long term.
It would damage confidence in our long term contracts ( hello TDK) and this is something the club doesn't want to do.

It is more a conversation on what we do with a perennial underachiever where we have a current attitude of zero tolerance towards players who underperform.

It's an interesting conundrum.

I have to disagree with this sorry.
Firstly they're big club that can offer a great lifestyle to players. Probably the best located club in Melbourne.
They went hard at last year's draft because it was noted as being exceptionally deep. Granted they took some risks on some players, but for quantity of talent they scored massively, also getting Lalor who is a once in every 5 years type player.
They acquired Norff's FRDP this year and will have another high pick in 2027 regardless of Tassie's influence.
They killed it.

He will get 3-4 years and then he will be “gettable” if things haven’t improved.

That contract will be seen as a bargain at that point

Reckon he's got till the end of 2027 to see how he goes then there's a proper team around him.

Would the club blame King for his injuries though?

Surely if anything they'd blame themselves for not managing his knee properly - ie the cleanout a couple weeks ago - and back themselves to get him back to his best

“I mean, this is the biggest game of ‘deal or no deal’ the AFL’s had for years — since Gary Ablett had the opportunity to go to the Suns by comparison of what Geelong was offering to keep him at home.

“I think this is the biggest ‘deal or no deal’ we’ve seen for some time.”

Through three matches this season, De Koning is averaging 25 disposals, 15.3 effective disposals, 15.7 contested possessions, 7.3 clearances, 2.7 intercept marks and 5.3 score involvements — all of which are categorised as elite among fellow AFL rucks.

Three-time Richmond premiership forward Jack Riewoldt compared the situation to when the Kangaroos were courting legendary Tiger Dustin Martin back in 2017.

“I’ve been in a similar situation where a big contract has been put in front of a superstar … he (Martin) got the 10-year offer to go to North Melbourne and turned it down — I think (De Koning) is in exactly the same boat as that.

There has also been some attention on the 201-centimetre man’s endurance as games go on, but King says potentially giving him another break isn’t an idea he pays much thought to.

“I don’t really subscribe to the fitness thing late (in games) … he has a six-to-seven-minute break at the midpoint of each quarter of the game — it was the same the previous week — it was the same the week before. That’s what he does,” King said.

“Maybe they could look at this and maybe get him another break in the second half somewhere, but he still had 28 touches (vs. the Bulldogs) again. What are you trying to achieve by getting him another break?

“He’s impacting so dramatically at the moment — you wouldn’t touch it, would you? Why would you change that program at all?”

Currently, the Dandenong Stingrays product ranks third in the competition for contested possessions per game, ninth for hitouts per game, fourth for contested possessions and sixth for total clearances.
STFU Riewoldt you gimp. Blues are a sinking ship.

Their most marketable star ever was Kouta, and what did he do with all this "brand" potential?

Started a now bankrupt souva franchise. Yeah cool. What is Riewoldt doing with all the marketability? Special comments for Channel 9. Lol.
