Training 2025 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

It is one sunny Saturday morning where the grass is still a bit dewy and wet and the trainers are in a hurry to dry the grass a bit (I am just assuming that is what they're doing as 2 people are pulling a rope like item along the grass).

It is Wardy's first training session this year, he told me he was sick and it's obvious as he's coughing a bit during training.

Separated from the main group are Wardy, Lewis, Blancky, Frosty, Mraz, Ginni, Wiz and Barras.

The main group looks like they are doing the usual stuff they are doing during a normal weekday main training.
Initially they do stretching, some kicking and run around for a lap or two to begin the session.

They are then separated into 3 groups where one group in particular focuses on quick handball in tight spaces (which I got some vids), the other group focuses on some agility kind of tasks, the last group focuses on group strength where they pull a heavy item. Then later they switch around the groups.

Later they are separated in 2 groups where they do the usual end to end kicking (from one goal end to the other).

In further sessions they are divided into groups again where some are focused on leading and marking,
some are doing match sims like 5 vs 3, 7 vs 5, 3 vs 3 etc.

In some of the sessions, I have noticed McCabe to be still quick and agile for his height.

Massa is still one of the last few players that left the oval (similar to what I've observed last season).

Near the end of the training, I have spoken to a few of our players.

I learned that Frosty, Blancky and Lewis are very near in joining the main group in the training.
They also mentioned that they will be in a camp (Torquay) in late Jan.

I have congratulated Frosty on his new baby and he mentioned that he got good sleeps and he expects more exciting times ahead.

Nick Watson said he’s just managing his load, nothing serious.

I have cheekily asked Weddle on why he lost to Amon in the time trials :) .
He said it's alright as he's taller and bigger and he got a different program.
He also added that he's faster this year compared to last year (I did not ask how he measured it), it is just that the other players are faster than him this year .... which he says is a good thing, more competition.

Thoroughly appreciated, Pinoy Hawk!

FYI I know many are talking about LDU but don’t be at all surprised to see pictures of Sam in a Perth cafe at some point later in the season chatting to Oscar Allen.
Oscar is a Sorrento Duncraig boy.
I know times are changing but not many WA boys leave Perth.

He would have a connection to Hickmott though, as well as Sam.
Hick was coaching his boys in Year 10 at SDJFC while Allen was playing Yr 11’s there

I certainly would be happy if we picked him up but I won’t hold my breathe

Yep, I’m not saying Oscar is interested, I’m saying Hawthorn is. Will be an interesting watch to see how West Coast approach it. I doubt Oscar leaves, but he just missed the ‘18 flag and another one is his time at West Coast looks unlikely. Will depend on his motivation but yes, he’s a WA boy through and through and loves the club.

Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to post these updates. Keep them coming! I've been away from the forum for a couple of months (got married!) and it looks like we might be moving back to Australia this year, so really keen to jump back on the brown and gold express.

I love that we have real competition for spots in the team now. Everyone looks fit and hungry 💪

Thanks for the report and brilliant to hear that the whiz is just managing his loads and nothing serious 👍. He is so so important to our forward mix

Love how old-school Blank is - even wears black runners to training.

I feel conflicted because I wish him well and to ply games this year but if that happens, we likely have injuries to other tall backs…

You reminded me of a game we played against Adelaide in Round 14, 2007 (I looked it up) - we'd won 5/6 games going into Round 14 by fairly large margins.

At the time, I remember feeling really confident; I actually couldn't visualise us losing (we ended up losing to the Crows by 71 points).

My mindset changed after that game - I remember learning that all teams have to face all matter of obstacles in order to win a premiership. We were obviously complacent on the day, but we did learn a required lesson that ultimately allowed us to salute in 2008.
They certainly did because they came back to beat Adelaide in the elimination final that year. I still believe that Sam used that game as the template for the way he wants the side to play today. Just have a look at it again. Gun and run in waves with support for the ball carrier and elite kicking out of defence and into attack to key targets.

Love seeing Ginnivan look even slimmer again. Hopefully he picks up where he left off.
Just from his facial expressions he is very focused and serious when training ……. he does have that head down bum up attitude!

Others supporters just watching him after kicking a goal etc may have a different view but he is a hard worker

I’m down in Anglesea until 23/1.
Anyone know (a) if they’re in Torquay then and (b) where and (c) whether it’s public?

Was he friendly with Barass? Seems impossible not to be - seems like a great bloke

Took the young bloke down to training after seeing it was on this morning. With lots going on (took some notes) here are some observations:

Calsher walked some laps with trainer.

Mackenzie, Sicily, Watson, Ginni (looking lean), Mraz doing some basic agility type drills separate to main group initially.

Lewis, Frost, Blanck also separate in a rehab group.

Time type trials for main group (separated into 2 groups) running laps for a specific time period.

1st group: Harry led after 3 laps, Serong took lead after 4. Hill at rear battling given encouragement from some others to keep up, after 5 laps Ramma led and the time trial finished not long after.

2nd group: This had more of the running guns. As per previous posts, initially lead by Weddle, with CJ, Finn, Battle just behind. Then CMac, Amon, Moore. Day in the middle of the pack and overtaken by Meek. Finn took lead after 3 laps, then CJ took lead after 4. CJ lost right at the end as Amon stormed home.

Reeves looking lean.

Group then split into 2 again with one doing ground balls, the other doing kicking drills. After 10 mins swapped. Lots of talk/encouragement.

Then all together as a group with Sam talking to them all.

Next was end to end kicking, passing, hand balling with multiple balls in play. Seemed to switch the ball to the middle a lot coming out of defence/wing.

Watson separately doing laps didn't really train with main group. Didn't see Ward at all.

Ginni also separate practicing leading from square and goal-kicking.

Then they broke off into 4 groups doing different groundball work this time with tackling. Focus to get hands free and dish off. Day involved in drill, even tackling Newcombe a few times.

Then a playing sim with the whole group. Hardwick playing forward. Battle, McCabe, Serong, CJ playing back. Ramsden FF playing on Barrass.

Then some more group based sims around stoppage and clearance. Then more kicking practice while moving at speed.

Some light kicking to wind down - session around 2 hours.

Young bloke got photos with all the new recruits. Barrass "thanks for coming down to training". Nice.

How did Ramsden look with Barrass playing on him?.
