The funny thing about all this is a lot of the way we play is not new. A great deal of it stems from the way Hawthorn won their premierships, even the first of their recent 4. And I mean you can really trace the kick-mark possession game right back to Mark Williams at Port Adelaide, where Clarkson was an assistant coach for a couple of seasons.

So I really don't think it's all particularly revolutionary, it's just that we were able to execute best when it mattered last year.

A saying we have in finance definitely has application in sports: an average plan followed to the letter is better than a brilliant plan followed poorly or not at all.

I think the decision making is important too. How much do you bite off knowing a turnover could be costly? It sounds a bit counterintuitive, but so much of defending well in the modern game is dependent on how you use the ball when you have it.

You are correct tho, a terrible decision executed brilliantly generally turns out better than a good decision executed very badly. Even tho a good coach is still going to call out the former.

You're not wrong. Need football IQ and the ability to pull it off. Imagine if Cedric Cox had the football IQ to match his kicking ability...

I think we've worked very hard on our disposal the last 2 or 3 years and seen massive improvements in that respect in players like Answerth ,Starcevich, Wilmot and even Zorko has become deadly after spraying it occasionally over his career, just for starters. Guys like Hipwood who were really iffy on the shorter kicks work within their limitations.

So once we have the ball its very hard to get it back off us. Besides which most of our guys are quite capable of getting it in the first place , Which is the basis of wining footy really.

Hopefully once the Lions get their media dept sorted they can post there too.

Credit to Fagan in instilling the necessary confidence in his plan and fellow team mates so that the team continued to execute under pressure. Perhaps his greatest coaching achievement.

True. There are many teams that have a good plan relative to their abilities/capacities but that only takes them so far against better teams with suitable plan.

I didn't express my point well which was more along the lines that if you have really good players you'll be able to find a plan that works for winning games whatever it is. If you don't have the quality of cattle you can have a plan that gets the best out of them and that's as far as it goes.

The paid blue check mark has ruined twitter. You go to a post and then have to scroll down past about a hundred identical blue tick bot replies.

Bluesky is ok at best, too much of an echo chamber at present. It’s much more my side of the ideological spectrum but boringly so.
