The only reason we're not talking about Curtin as a defender in 2025 is that he got injured, and Keane ran with it. Otherwise, Dan probably plays 22 games as a third tall and comes in top three in R/S due to being extremely talented and it being an easy position to do well in.
Curtin had impressive stints in the U18 Championships as a MID

The reason we're not talking now about Curtin as a DEF is two-fold

1. The media are pushing the Fwd / Mid capabilities ....you can argue the chicken & the egg philosophy....BF first then media, or media then BF ?

2. You can't play all of Keane, Murray, Worrell, and Curtin down back .....and that's not factoring in Butts

3. He was so bad as a defender that BF and the club have shelved that idea.

I think supporters on this board should take heed of what Hamish said of Daniel after the draft.

Also no surprise Charlie Edwards has apparently been playing some half back in the preseason given that's where he played mostly for the Sandy Dragons and school footy before the Nationals and only went into the midfield when Ashcroft, Reid, Marshall etc got called up for Nationals duty.

Ogilvie said finding out Curtin could be available changed the Crows’ plans considerably.

“We thought it was more about pick 7 but we weren’t really sure at that stage whether it was Dan, because we still didn’t really know what the clubs inside six were going to do,” he said.

“But it became somewhat of a reality over the past two to three days.

“We were ready for it, that was the good thing. We had a number of scenarios planned out and offers and to be fair to the Giants they were really good to deal with so we worked well on that together.”
While he has impressed as a defender in West Australia, Curtin can also play as a forward and could even be a tall midfielder – which the Crows have been crying out for.

“Yeah he was really a forward during most of his junior footy, last year he was interrupted and played pretty much everywhere this year,” Ogilvie said.

“Started forward in the colts, played a bit of everywhere in the AFL Academy and by the end of the season in the league team he was all over the place.

“So it was a good standing and those WAFL finals he played in were really tough and gives him a really good grounding.

“So we are ecstatic, it was pretty bold the move but credit to Reidy (list boss Justin Reid) and the analysts they had all the scenarios ready to go and we were able to work with the Giants to get it done.”

He had a bad game as a defender against Brisbane, but that appeared to just be having his offense/ defence balance off a bit (a couple of steps too much leg rope on his opponents). I wouldn't write off his ability to be an elite running defender (or half forward, or mid).

That's a stretch even by your standards, WW.

During his draft year, he was viewed as a KPD who had the capacity/versatility to move into the midfield. The AFC said as much when they recruited him. There were plenty on here who were concerned when they heard that AFC interview, because they viewed him entirely as a big-bodied midfield star of the future, and were concerned that we would try to use him as a defender instead.

The club then, indeed, initially placed him in a KPD role at both SANFL and AFL level.

Laying that on this board is just not accurate.
Mmmmm ?? ..... ;)

Doesn't Hamish contradict something that Daniel said himself in an earlier post of yours

What, because he wasn't a star defender by game #4 ? .....I think you have to be a little more realistic with 1st year players

Hardly any draftee's defend well after coming out of U18's ......many many Coaches have stated that

So now i seem to be stuck at 206 in queue fo the last 10 minutes

Norwood oval game sold out. So can only get AO games now.

The Saturday game?

I got a ticket to the Sunday Parade game after you posted this. Doing the food and wine festival then the game, did the same last year, was brilliant.

Surprised to see the Saturday game was sold out first.

Not at any point in Stab's response to you did he mention his own personal views. Your response has no relevance to his post whatsoever, unless your view is that Stab represents the entire Adelaide BF board.
I wasn't going to swamp the board with historical posts, but there's enough evidence there if you want to search

Played all 3 areas of the ground in his draft year and at the Nationals, hardly played any footy the previous season.

local rag Perth Now referred to him as a swiss army knife and we all know what that means.

WAFL Colts grand final: Top AFL draft prospect Daniel Curtin headlines Claremont, Perth battle

Swiss army knife and projected top 5 pick, Daniel Curtin will be one of the many young guns on display as the Claremont Tigers take on Perth Demons at Optus Stadium this Sunday afternoon.

Ok, but using him to gauge trajectory is a bit flawed given his pathway into the league. And I'm not sure that he was pegged as a stoppage mid from the get go. Either way, it's very difficult to find a perfect comparison to measure Curtin's development against. There's a lot of factors involved and variations with the relevant factors of the players mentioned so far. But he averaged 11 disposals largely forwardish when not sub, so that's a pretty promising start off not an ideal preseason in terms of a bit of injury.

One thing I disagree with though, is that his development curve should match the rucks/KPPs because 'talls take time'. He moves like a kid that's ready to go, at least in terms of playing a high forward/mid/wing style role. He's no gangly kid that needs to grow into his body.
Yep agree , he’s a unique talent so it’s hard to find comparisons

I’m not sure any of us in here or himself or the club really know what role he will end up filling , likely be a bit of everything throughout his career

Very much reminds me of Dawson at same age who was pegged as a half forward then became a half back / wing at swans then inside mid eventually

Agree in time he will be able to play as a defender too

Just might not be his best spot now or ever

Doubt he will ever be a key defender but it’s possible , just seems a waste

In what way?

Jordan Dawson was a late draft pick who was 189cm and 84kg and was a medium forward. Curtin was pick 8 at 197cm and 95kg and played in all 3 areas as a junior.

Go back and read my post again.

I said Dawson was a medium forward.

Curtin was played in all 3 areas of the ground as a junior (thus the difference).
I did hence I deleted it

Looking at the limited available info it appears Curtin played far more midfield and forward and only played defence later in his draft year. Don't think he was on too many radars as a top end pick coming into his draft year though he did play really well in that futures game the previous year.

Does that mean anything?

Ashton Moir was the easy #1 selection 12 months out. Posters were losing their minds 10 weeks out because we gave away what ended up being pick 32 because it meant we would miss out on first rounder Alex Dodson (who went pick 53).

I think Curtin's best on in the Futures game probably brought him into more focus than previous WA form.

.
#22 Daniel Curtin (Claremont/Western Australia)

Recognised as the best player afield, Curtin may as well have had the honours wrapped up at quarter time. For every inside 50 Team Murphy managed, Curtin managed another intercept mark or rebound 50, reading the ball superbly in flight and approaching it more aggressively than any opponent. Contested or uncontested, Curtin was just holding everything he put his hands to. The marking was impressive, but what stood out with Curtin was how good his ball use was for a tall, with the left-footer hitting dangerous options at both short and long range, generally favouring options in the corridor. Unfortunately he didn’t get the opportunity to show off his forward craft, but he looms as an early selection in 2023 regardless of role.
