AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
The club has a list to manage. Should we have exposed ourselves by offering a 4 year deal to a player who this time last year was staring at potentially his last year in the AFL? We did have an oversupply of inside mids and a clear lack of outside class, hence the Higgins move being a logical one IMO. The club did have room in the cap I am sure, and it was a list management call, which dictated what our final offer would have been to him. He didn't take it - that's his call. We move on, but ONLY if the right deal can be struck. If not, that's his problem now.I am devastated to see him leave.
Whilst his talent didn't come through till this year his commitment to the cause and attack at the ball and man was exactly what this club is about. I can remember multiple examples of ridiculous courage going back with the flight of the ball, as recently as the Essendon final on the Southern Wing.
Having said that, this does hurt. Some of us have been in his corner right from the start, even urging him on when he came on as a sub against GWS in 2013 and sprayed his first kick out on the full, and glouriously shouted "Get around the Pig" when his goal in Rd 2 announced
Does anyone remember the footage from AFL Insider back in 2010? where they showed Brad coaching him at training, then made fun of him being the coaches pet? What's happened?!
Should we be angry at Levi for chasing the cash, or at the club for letting this happen?
I know we can't expect to keep everyone, but Levi's one I really didn't want to go. He was all about North I thought.
Im disappointed he wants to go now, but you can hardly blame him. No opportunities for 2 years, and then he finally gets a game. No contract offer until the end of the year. Cant blame him at all, and your comment is misguided!!
Well, that's pretty much it in real world sense. But being the best in a ceilinged competition requires some kind of emotional investment and buy in for a group of good to great players to stick together. Levi obviously ain't that way inclined.C'mon how many of us would stay in a job on s shorter term contract for less money?
Difference between 3 and 4 years isn't a major one, especially for a good player who expects to be around for 5 or 6. Money wise I don't think there was that much in it, by all reports.C'mon how many of us would stay in a job on s shorter term contract for less money?
I know it's fashionable to scream obscenities at player managers, and Pickers in particular, but if he got him $1.8M over four years for one good year he's doing his job. ifyouknowwhatimean?Levi's good form came after he was asked to work on his game, he was then given an opportunity and took it with both hands and as a consequence had his best full season by far. He played in 3 finals and was an influential player after the initial contract offer. Pies came in, North upped their offer and Levi decided to bail. If he feels hard done by then he really needs to take a good, hard look at himself, and his manager is doing him a disservice in the long run if he is fuelling this perception.
Yeah well said B Tron. I am sick of all this "he was hard done by" nonsense. Levi played more games this year than last because he was a better player, not because of some mysterious change of mindset from the coach. If we wants to leave for a few more dollars and go play for Collywobbles then I say good riddance. He was offered a contract earlier in the year which he didn't like and he was playing 2's for the majority of the last two seasons because he wasn't following instructions on field when he did get his chance, despite being on decent coin. Lets not re-write history here.

But you can never know when you will get injured, and If that happens the contract you are on May be your last.Difference between 3 and 4 years isn't a major one, especially for a good player who expects to be around for 5 or 6. Money wise I don't think there was that much in it, by all reports.
But the club has to look after itself too, not to end up with another Urq or Loose McMahon situation. But you can never know when you will get injured, and If that happens the contract you are on May be your last.
How have you come to this conclusion? Sustained success over a period of time? Just how are our guys better than Sydney, Hawthorns or Geelongs?

He is, in the business sense. But that implies that Levi makes the decision to leave purely on monetary terms. A player manager should, IMO, provide his player with a rounded perspective, which includes the option of staying where you are for ultimate success and understanding where you are in your trade as a professional. If tteam success isn't a consideration for Levi then righto, **** off then.I know it's fashionable to scream obscenities at player managers, and Pickers in particular, but if he got him $1.8M over four years for one good year he's doing his job. ifyouknowwhatimean?
So would I.If it was playing for north?? I would sign any contract that was put in front of me.
My comment was about calling him Moneywood. Misguided to say he chased money, and unfair for a player at NMFC. He is leaving because the offer was below what the market was, and the fact that Higgins came in with a higher offer. The offer earlier in the year was obviously no good, and he has clearly made more following this current path.He was offered a contract earlier in the year which he didn't like and he was playing 2's for the majority of the last two seasons because he wasn't following instructions on field when he did get his chance, despite being on decent coin. He did play for the jumper. But at the end of the day footy is a career now and you need to make the most of the time you have in the game.I can accept that as a good sumnation of the club's position.
So this lies with Levi. Maybe. I find it hard to feel bad toward him, I've always thought of him as one of the few who genuinely played for the jumper when he wore it.
A SEN caller suggested a three way trade with gold coast and collingwood, greenwood and mullet to collingwood, beams to gold coast and D Swallow to roos, unlikely but would be nice!
Look at our list. We have lots of middle 20 year olds who will be coming off contract. If we offer a bloke who played one good year more than he was worth and the other players know it, it hamstrings us when other players come off contract and we might lose a really important player.
And I remind myself of Phil Baker who in 1975 played 5 games and left for Geelong in 1976.
In 1977 he returned to NM, lesson learned.
Or Stuart Anderson, 1996 NM premiership player, who in 1997 left for the cash at Fremantle and was soon out of the league to be replaced by Winston Abraham, premiership player in 1999.
