For me, our current situation reminds me so much of the 70’s. We got Barassi, we got Davis, Randall and Wade. We saw a light!
The Clarkson effect is real. Hopefully our 3 new recruits can have the same impact to our players and club through their leadership, experience and performance.

Did Barassi have to take a significant break because bullshit allegations were levelled at him though
Barassi was out for a year in 72.

This year will be a full decade since Clarkson last won a flag, and two decades since he started coaching.

He took Hawthorn to the finals in his third year (this year is the equivalent for us) and a flag in his fourth.

I simply don’t think he has it anymore.

We are leagues worse than Hawthorn 04-05 were. They were just your standard bottom 4 rebuilding side. We have been the worst team in the AFL era.

Having said that, if we don't see significant improvement this year I can understand people starting to get restless with the leadership.

Due to an interrupted first year I'm personally giving him until 26 before I bring out any knives. By then many of our youth will have between 60-100 games under their belts and he will be running out of excuses. If he allows the players to pick the same captains again though, it will be very disheartening.

Couldn't agree with this any more.

I firmly believe that the racism saga effectively negated the "refresh / renew" benefits the year off would have / could have had.

Beyond player retention, and that is a real thing that cannot be overlooked from a club culture perspective especially when we've been god awful, I haven't seen anything on field to note.

You may be right. However it has been a pretty shitty start to his time at Arden st. with all that stuff now off his back let’s see how things go in 25

See where you're coming from mate but hawks were finalists in 3 of the previous 5 years iirc when Clarkson took over.

They boldly landed Hodge, had blooded Sheezel and drafted their premiership keys before Clarkson even coached his first game.

Clarkson took over a list that hadn't seen a final for 6 years and had such future weapons as Atu Bosenavulagi and Jack Mahony on the list.

Reckon we were way behind hawks 2004.

That said, I agree we've under-delivered so far no matter what measure you use.

Hawks made a prelim in 2001 and pushed Essendon who had barely lost a game in the space of 2 years

10th in 2002, 9th in 2003, 2004 it fell apart and they finished 2nd last, Clarko then took over

It was like Clarko taking over at the end of 2017. Instead we had two more years of the Mr Average, 1 and a half years of Shaw and a year and a half of green shoots Noble.

Agree. We were worse and got less help from head office to dig ourselves out. Whether Clarko still has "it" I don't know, but I'm reasonably comfortable he has enough of it to be a stabilising force. Whether someone else has to come in towards the end of his contract to finish off the good work time will tell.

The fact that after Shaw was released from his obligations, we couldn't even get people like Michael Voss willing to be interviewed for head coach just shows how unappealing a destination Arden St was.
A West Coast assistant at the time was informed through his manager that North had reached out to see if he would apply for the position and he literally laughed and said “tell them thanks, but no thanks..”

When we're on the podium and Clarko has cemented his reputation as the best in the game's history I hope these clowns realise that the fact they weren't up for the task shows why they will never be the best.

Hawks had way more quality on the list in 2004, they absolutely failed but from memory that was the year when Schwab came out in pre season and said they'd push for the flag, many bought into it as well.

It's crazy to think of Clarko as the Barassi of '73 - there is nothing to suggest that comparison at all. The age difference and relative recent records of the two is hugely different.

Clarko is more like the Barrassi that went to the Swans in the 90's - effectively the elder statesman/figure head to give the club cred and set up the structure for future years/decades.

Whilst we were definitely an unappealing destination it’s also on Voss that he perhaps felt he wasn’t experienced enough to turn the club around. He was always going to take a gig with the lowest risk, knowing he was most likely not going to get another chance.

I think it was more Voss and management keeping him in mind as a coaching contender, somewhere.

Really it’s Clark’s second year with us in 2025, his first year was a write off

100% spot on. Plus he inherited the worst list in living memory and TT going off the rails.
