Midfield minutes?

Refer Brad Scott's views;

"I think we tend to push the really good players, who are Andy's size, into the midfield. If they're really good players, that's where they should play. But an analogy I'd use from where I'd been previously at Collingwood a long time ago, Heath Shaw was an All-Australian half-back and every year there would be this push from fans and the club to get him into the midfield. The best thing for Heath was us realising he's an All-Australian half-back and that's his best position.

Ayrton Wooley has given us another contender for longest article ever posted on the Essendon website;

I wasn't going to bump too many of these but one more, because I think the esteem in which Redman's leadership attributes are held on here are a bit out of proportion šŸ¤£ Leadership group maybe, but this doesn't sound like a guy with universal support/respect from the players if he's the first guy they're throwing under the bus...

Another team meeting awaits, this time around the logistics of the journey to the Gold Coast. With a big group upwards of 35 players heading North, some will need to share rooms.

Seniority has certain perks, so Heppell is pretty confident of avoiding any sort of room sharing.

Who would he most like to avoid?

ā€œā€™Ridsā€™ or Redman,ā€ he quips. ā€œBloody annoying.ā€

ā€œIā€™m happy to throw ā€˜Reddersā€™ under the bus as well,ā€ Wright concurs.

ā€œHeā€™ll always want to be doing things with you, and I prefer doing my own thing.ā€

No sooner is that settled and the noise coming from the gym thumps through the entire building. It can mean only one thing: Jayden Laverde has taken over as resident DJ for the afternoon weights session.

It could be a nightclub such is the volume; the genre in Laverdeā€™s words ā€œHouse tunesā€.

ā€œThere is a bit of pressure [in picking a playlist], but you canā€™t please everyone,ā€ he admits.

ā€œThere are some days that call for some lighter tunes, but on days like today you need a bit more upbeat and a bit more electricity. I do try and pick music to try and get the vibe up in the place.ā€

Andrew Phillips might play some rock alternatives, while country music if more to Michael Hurleyā€™s taste.

ā€œHeā€™s a different soul,ā€ Laverde says.

Apparently, he simply doesnā€™t care what his now-former team-mates think.

ā€œMason Redman will also often try to take over, but heā€™s a bit hit and miss. A few songs will come up and the boys will be like ā€˜nah, come on mateā€™.ā€

[His opinion on Brad Scott's coaching]

ā€œHe doesnā€™t overtalk,ā€ says Mason Redman. ā€œBut, with his 10 or 11 years of coaching experience, when he does, you listen.ā€

Quite clearly our best across the 4 quarters keeping us in it in the first alongside a couple of defensive team mates.

Seriously under rated player who if you've followed my posts should be spoken about right next to Richmond darling Daniel Rioli as he is every bit as DR.

Superb game in round 1

The bloke just keeps improving. It feels like every year he just gets a little better.
I rated him as our best player (although a few others were close last week) and I thought some of his disposal was really damaging.
I'm tipping he'll go top 5 in our B&F this year and at least make the AA squad.

Looks like heā€™s gone to another level.

Has hit that sweet spot in his career where he still has all his athleticism and itā€™s now coupled with maturity, experience and footy IQ.

Gave away a 50 for dissent after "touching it 3 times in that marking contest"...Red Dog didn't drop his head and sulk, next play he was taking a very strong contested mark and getting on with it. Great game and a real leader of our team.
That was Laverde.
Redman did have a word with him later to calm the group down

May not be a designated leader, but he's very much our marshall down back.
