I don’t really understand the Phillips concerns. Isn’t he tracking very similar to Cunnington, LDU, Simpkin etc at the same age? He already had a few breakout games last year and improved fitness (following recovery from glandular fever) and consistency (same as any other young player) will see continued progress next year.

Of our on ball brigade, I see Powell, Shiels, Tucker, Greenwood and Lazzaro much more likely to struggle for games in our best 22 than Phillips.

1. LDU
2. Wardlaw
3. Mckercher
4. Thomas
5. Phillips
6. Powell

That’s what I think it looks like going forward in terms of preferences. Sheezel and Duursma to play as forwards, Simpkin to a wing or high half forward.
Imo Phillips and Powell with need to fight for that 5th string midfielder position, and the other will likely peter out.

Simpkin does not have the speed to play wing and is average forward. He is a mid.

Don’t need to have elite speed to play wing, it’s more his high end repeat sprints. I’d be more concerned about his kick penetration from the wing.
He’d play a high half forward up and back style, less of a goal kicker.

Bizarre. Kid got a Brownlow vote in his last game and he’s no where near his ceiling physically.

Mckercher will be more outside imo for his first few years

I think he's tracking very well. Ben didn't have 8 or so blokes in his age bracket he was duking it out with, though. It's about opportunity and logic dictates our 6th, 7th, 8th preferred mids are either not gonna be mids, or aren't going to make it with us.

I like him but he's going to want to be winning a shit ton of contested ball and laying (and sticking) tackles like a madman if he's to gain a regular spot.

Though he's a neat kick, I wasn't prepared for such lack of depth there. All of our other mids can kick longer than him and most of them are faster.

****ing weird that I can still see him becoming captain/vice captain one day. He has the chance to be the soul of the team, but he does look a bit up against it at the moment

I was going to say, if we think the order of inside mids is something like the one above, that still leaves Phillips/Powell as strong, effective depth, compared to someone like Lazarro who I really like, but might be destined to be a very good VFL player. Strong, effective depth is still valuable, considering we still have quite a few players who are definitely not that.

Phillips will be the engine to the whole thing. Writing him off is criminal. Just wait IMO
Dude is built to be that annoying midfielder who churns his way to almost every stoppage, either gets his hand on the ball or on the bloke who gets it before him, and more often than not cleanly (if not particularly creatively) gets it out to the mids on the outside of the pack. He can, although has been very inconsistent, also deliver the ball beautifully short/medium into the 50 when he has time and space. Fitness and consistency are the two things holding him back the most, but unless getting Glandular Fever has had a permanent toll (it can happen), or turned him into a lazy bugger, then the fitness will get there sooner or later.

Dunno whether he makes it to being in the primary rotation (we've recruited some rippers), but he will feature in the guts for a long time to come if the footy gods don't deal him another crap card or two IMO.

Of course I'd like him to succeed, given we used pick 3 on him. Great bloke, professional, team player, etc. But I just don't think he has enough tools to be best 22.
He doesn't have pace, doesn't have height, gets bumped off the ball, kicking lacks penetration, not a goal kicking mid..
If all he can provide on field is tackling and short distance give offs, then he's quite limited as a footballer.

Of all the guys to be concerned about, I don't think the 21 year old guy who got a Brownlow vote in his most recent game is up there

It was a bit of a no contest game, but 26 touches, 6 clearances, 6 inside 50's, 9 score involvements, 426 meters gained from 69% game time is noting to sneeze at. At times during that game he looked super sharp around the contest too, like he did at U/18 level.

He just needs to get fitter, stronger, faster.

Would be struggling for a spot in the team playing midfield which is one of the only positions he can play …
Must improve or we will have another Paddy Dow on our hands to make a decision on this time next year .

I honestly think his midfield craft is better than Simpkin's. The glandular fever ****ed him physically as he demonstrated at junior level a burst pace from the contest and an ability to just keep running. His top end isn't there but he gets up to speed off a step, has super clean hands, both left and right and makes great decisions in close. Just needs to get AFL fit.

if a game looks like a no contest it's often because one side's midfielders are having games like that.

Spot on, Phillips is so close to early Cunners but with a leadership voice. He will be the perfect backdrop to all of our class in the midfiled, won't get a massive salary and will be talked about as a stalwart clubman later when he hits 250 games. He can play and will be close to future captain and be a leader on the field. Will always be underrated but will be a fan favorite.
