Will looked excellent at training today _ a stand out! Looked quick, didn’t fumble and his kicking was accurate. Hopefully a sign that he is up an running for the season.

Ah everyone on here wants us to be successful and win games and play finals.
It is ok to have concerns over some footballers.
Wil certainly has some AFL traits. Is ultra professional in his approach, now I know he’s gone, John Blakey was unsure Wil is good enough for this caper.

We haven’t missed on a first round pick for many years (pre simpkin I guess) and even if Will doesn’t justify the pick, if you look at that 2020 draft it appears the worst draft this century

Will has run 100m in under 11.5 seconds. I know of two people on this board who have done that and i'm one of them.
That's faster than I would have guessed for him. I wonder how that compares to the average AFL midfielder? It doesn't really matter because a midfielder virtually never gets to run a 100m sprint during a game. It is the speed over 5, 10 and 20 meters that matters most, which is why they test for those at the combine. Even if his main role is to win the ball and then dish it out as quick as possible, speed off the mark will always be important for any footballer.

Wil's biggest problem is being a #3 pick and the expectations that come with that. The recruiters had very little to go on his draft year and so far the evidence is that it was a very poor draft year. A player like Jai Newcombe completely missed out on being drafted and like a number of others who are now first 22 players was only picked up in the 2021 MSD. At least Wil appears to be on the improve and hopefully he can continue that trajectory next year.

If that's what makes or breaks him, he makes it. With flying colours
Well you know what l mean..his skills needs to improve and sharpen like all other players but he's never going to be faster than Wardlaw on the burst, he's never going to out mark TT nor is he able to kick 60m on the run but if he's highly efficent with his disposals that's all down to his decision making which is certainly better than Lazzaro's and it's yet to be seen consistently if it's better than Simpkin's.

Time to move on from this thread TAO, we all know you don't rate him, you're reaching Nostra / Bailey Scott levels of antagonism.

For those of us old enough to remember Dylan Smith with pick 6, there are some similarities there…

His biggest asset right now is the club is backing him in. Compared to Powell, he is being put in critical positions and given the opportunity. Unlike some others, if he does fail it won't be because of a lack of opportunity.

Yep sure do!! Dylan, Motlop, Harris, Petrie, Pratt, Jones, Sinclair , Harding, Teague in his draft year but for whatever reason, he didn't kick on - maybe Pagan stiffled his first 2 years (can't remember now).

One thing i've noticed is he's fast to get to the ball in contests, so not so much on the burst away from contests but to be first there, get hands on it then do something useful with it.

Which pairs up well with burst players like LDU and Warlord and also with guys who can move on the outside like Colby, Bails, Stephens and Fisher.

GR posted some results from some 100m races a few years. Jack Mahony also ran an 11.5/6 iirc. So yeah that reinforces your point about the shorter distances.

Will looked very muscular around the shoulders in comparison to most of the others yesterday. By the looks of it he's been working hard on getting strong, which will aid him considerably if he's in that inside role. I look at him and I just see a future Cunnington 2.0, with the quick hands, tough noggin and inside contest doing all the boring stuff that allows his teammates to excel. He lacks the Wombat-like physique of cunnington at the moment, but adds more pace and tank. I think he'll demonstrate that he was worth the pick 3 this coming year, but you wont hear any media about it cause he doesnt do the flashy stuff.

I think your first paragraph is where a lot of others can’t see past.

Fast to the contest, but is more often than not, the “distributor”, which some may say, is because he’s too slow to break away. I don’t hold to that theory, I just think it’s his creativity by hand that just makes it more comfortable for him.

Maybe with what hopefully will be a full uninterrupted preseason behind him, he may take the game on more and run and carry, but at the moment he’s a genius in tight and I’m happy for that to continue with an increased possession count.
