C'mon Smith show some balls, Clarke would have declared by now.

Just the way the modern game and TV ratings work. If Smith wants a future ch9 commentary "jobs for the boys" role he is also influenced to declare early rather than take the safe bat out for a draw option.
The Channel 9 influencing declarations is the Australian version of letting bookies determine matches.
Television broadcasters having a slight involvement in the result of a match is less corrupt then bookies swaying things I guess...

They don't win either...It Ain't a one dayer because NZ don't lose if they don't get the runs so if they lose early wickets they will just shut up shop.
F***s given about cricket by the 9 board are decreasing each year, as the old man's shadow fades. I can't imagine Packer being satisfied with this commentary box.
Love the termA declaration now would be Cronjesque
Declaration solely to avoid a draw without even thinking about whether or not you can actually win the match
Yeah I'd be happy with that. About 8 an over for 45ish overs.
Almost certainly a draw but just a chance that Starc will do something magical or NZ will go overboard and get themselves in trouble.
They don't win either...

That's why we lost test matches under Clarke where we should have taken the draw
Get about a 6 RPO lead and then declare. Turn it into a one-dayer. Surely the pressure is on NZ to win at 1-0 down.
... is what one would have said just after lunch yesterdayHalf way through day 4 and the pitch starts to do something
if the series was 0-0 we would think about it. 1-0 NZ have to make the play. If we draw here we retain the trophy.
Agree the backlash would be huge, probably end up in court over it.You have to think about how bad this would be if it was true and then got out though. The summer of cricket is pretty massive for Channel 9 in terms of keeping them competitive as a station (especially in the age of online streaming), and if it became public knowledge that they were attempting to influence international matches, you could imagine the public backlash would be huge and they'd probably take a pretty big ratings hit, a much bigger hit than the short term gain they would stand to make from manipulating matches.
Which ones? That's why we lost test matches under Clarke where we should have taken the draw
What's with all this talk about channel 9 having an influence on the declaration? Did I miss something? Is there some proof that this might be the case or has everyone just got their conspiracy theory tin foil hat on?
... is what one would have said just after lunch yesterday
SMith makes an obvious effort to go out the front put on a mic and listen to nine when the dec is looming but it's tin foil hat stuff to think it could possibly in any way then influence how he thinks?
Why go to all that effort if what 9 says means not a thing to him?
