GC Suns to make the 8:
Omera to have a better second year than his first
Prestia to really stand up
Dixon to become an elite forward

Port:

John Butcher.....needs to be a consistent key forward option

Ollie Wines.....if he can build on '13 form with increased fitness and consistency, we are set

Mason Shaw....we need some young forward options to develop quickly, he has some x-factor about him.

For your reserves side? Or for some local league side?

I wouldnt be playing him at all with Westhoff and Schulz. Both far superior players. Have monfries as your 3rd semi-marking forward and then you've got robbie gray + neade/defensive forward + midfielder to fill your forward line.

I will ignore the players drafted this year as they still have time to prove themselves but if 3 out of Woodward, grimley, hallahan and Langford are pushing regulars from 2013 out of the side then I believe that will take us to the next level.

Duryea or suckling I'm thinking will replace guerra and mcevoy replaces bailey from the GF side plus they have been exposed enough to be considered reasonable players.

He hasn't been fit the last few years. IF he can get some fitness, he may potentially be able to show something. He showed 2 or 3 years ago, that he has some ability. But the jury is definitely out, on whether he can get that fitness, and get back some form.

He didnt show enough to be ahead of the seasoned veterans Westhoff, Schulz and Monfries.
Unless you can turn him into a backman, I dont see him making a big impact in 2014.
This is honest AFL opinion, not bias from a crows fan.

IMHO there are a range of differnt ways you can look at this for the tigers.

1) To make the team work better. Firslty we need to stop athletic tall rucks from creating fast breaks from stoppages. Thus Hampson is vital to just break even at least with the tall jumping rucks. Secondly we need a tall forward to take the pressure off Jack. I'm on record as saying Vickery could do that, so he is up there. But is a very long way from his inconsistency to a regular good AFL key forward job. If he can play near his best regularly watch out. Thirdly we need a pack smashing mid to relieve Cotch. We have Conca, Vlastuin, Arnot to do that if they can step up - any one will do.

2) The three guys that can create real depth and simply make it up hard to match up on because of numbers of quality players. In no particular order. Griffiths is very tall, mobile and a great kick. He could stetch defences out another 10-15 meters and so free up TV and Jack. Would be huge to our structure if he became OK, not great but OK. Second, Knights has good skills, size and can kick the ball out of sight. He can make our midfield and forward line so much more dangerous because he is hard to match up on whilst still containing Deledio, Cotch and Dusty. Lastly, another inside mid as above.

3) the three most talented youngsters we have (Sorry McBean no place for me until I see you in the AFL) - Conca, Vlastuin and Ellis are all potential A grade mids. They could be the core of a very good side on their own. And they would be our number 4,5 and 6 mids!!!!!! If they all reach their potential we have an amazing amount of quality players in our midfield.

So three different ways of looking at the OP. I imagine all clubs are similar, mature players to step into key roles, borderline players to become decent and so strengthen the team in key areas, and youngsters with outrageous potential.

There's quite a few at Hawthorn who haven't been able to crack into the side because of Clarkson's conservative team selection.

I feel that Angus Litherland (a fast Ben Stratton) should be able to replace Guerra and give us some more rebound out of defence.

Our defence is great, probably the best in the comp - we were missing a few of our best/better defenders plus had McPharlin being nursed back from injury in the 2013 finals series and still did pretty well
Our midfield is also top notch
Our forward line needs to fire better if we are to have another crack at the flag, but having said that:

Gumbleton - needs to deliver and be our 2nd tall forward target (would be great if he can do this AND Mayne continues on where he left off in 2013 - was one of our best, even though he was often playing as a 1st or even 2nd tall)
Pavlich - needs to continue on his fine form from the last 5-10 games of 2013
D. Pearce - has shown flashes and there have been times I've wondered why he wasn't "given a rest", but he needs to step up with some consistency in 2014

Others:
Griffin (when back) was immense when he was playing (See first Derby when he was on his own v Cox) - ditto Clarke, needs to just work on consistency imo
Silvia to be a mid/forward and really turn it on
Ballantyne - has an enormous X factor but when things go wrong for him, they generally go horribly wrong!

Scott Pendlebury/ is there a level above what he currently is?
Already the second best in the AFL but for him to take over Gaz's throne of best in the buisness and to be the clear favorite for the Brownlow that would be great.
Steele Sidebottom/ had qualified for father son selection midway through the year a few months after his 22nd birthday, already a disposal magnet. Averaged a goal a game and about 25 touches a game before the move on the back flank in the second quarter of the year. Says he wanted to build his muscle over the preseason so for him to find more contested footy and to be more damaging with footy in hand along with a goal a game he would be looking at AA honors.
Lachlan Keeffe/ one of my personal favorites, averaged less than a 1 direct goal per game in his 8-9 games in 2013 while being matched up against players such as Buddy, Tippett and Cameron. If he can keep doing what he does but average 15-18 disposals per game with more rebounds life would be good and he would be in the AA squad.

Trengove; utter shit last year. Injured and burdened with captaining the worst team in the AFL. Showed absolutely no development or improvement, and must now be paying a huge emotional tax after being ditched from the captaincy. Hopefully he can overcome this.

Watts; Come on son. Enough's enough. All the talent in the world. Has done some magical things on the field; he's composed, a good kick, smart in traffic and has a nice haircut as well. He's had the spotlight on him more than any other number 1 draft pick and was completely mismanaged by **** FACE SHIT FOR BRAINS MARK NEELD but he should be PEACHES to go right now.

Toumpas; I just want this guy to convince me that he's not another waste of a draft pick. He's apparently good, let's see it.

Whether or not Pendlebury is the second best player in the comp is debateable - he's clearly in a group of players sitting just behind Ablett but I doubt you'd get consensus that he's clearly the second best.

But regardless, I don't see that any marginal improvement in Pendlebury is going to make much difference to the Pies. You already have one of the strongest groups of top tier players amongst the clubs. What the Pies need to move back up to premiership contention is less reliance, week in week out, on Pendlebury, Swan and Cloke and a more consistently improved contribution from the rest of the team, especially those in the 16-22 or so group.

How fast is Ben Stratton?

Stratton is genuinely quick hes done jobs on Eddie Betts, Garlett, Walters etc which you can not do if you are slow!! I think HP is pulling his podge with Litherland's speed. And also pulling his podge that Litherland will get an opportunity.

Our rebound will come from Suckling's return and Taylor Duryea stepping up. Suckling is a massive in for us as he provides speed of his boot only matched by McKenzie at GC. Suckling also offers lots of weird angles due to his around the corner style. Not to mention his kicking out skills!!

My three would be..

Sucko returning
Anderson to play 18+ games
Grimley - Tall agile forward / ruck

Anything out of Garlett would be a bonus, Also Schoey returning who I feel might spend a fair bit of time forward in 2014...

Its just that i don't notice Stratton when i watch the Hawks play. Are you sure Suckling will come in and have an immediate impact?

For me the 3 players that will take the club to the next level (I have left out new recruits for this season as they are unknown in the chemistry) are..

Lee Spurr - Great solid defender that has been compared to Glenn Archer. He has a cool head, good disposal and a fearlessness that makes him a tough opponent without being suicidal. He filled quite a few holes in our defence last season, especially with untimely injuries to McPharlin, Ibbotson and Pearce (Clancee). If the defence is a bit more injury free i think he could be much more damaging with his disposal from half back.

Matt Tabener- Was a bit green last season, but he is developing nicely. Big 197cm tall forward with a strong mark, he is starting to blossom into decent target. He only played 4 games for freo, showed a few dominating games in the Wafl. There will be times where a few of the Forwards will need to be rested or recover from injury. Pav, Gumbleton, Apeness and Keplar Bradley are fit for now, but fitness and form throughout the year could be an unknown quantity, and with a potential to contest the ruck too could be very handy.

Stephen Hill- With another big name coming to Freo in Sylvia, there will be a bit more depth in the midfield, where I think Hill will be a benefactor. Having struggled previously with a tag, it may free him somewhat and let him use his speed to break away. He has great disposal and has a much increased tank, probably the best example was his breakaway goal to seal the final against Geelong.
Agree on Hill.

Would change Taberner to "any key forward who steps up". Could be Tap, but also Gumbleton, a ruckman, Bradley staying fit a firering a whole year or a draftie. But for me Gumbleton then Taberner are the most likely to do the job.

Third I like to name Fyfe. Resting forward for a goal or two, better kicking and generell improvement (he is still young) will make him an unstoppable gamebreaker.

Yes, Suckling seemed to play well in our intra club the other day, he is not a "body contact" type player which makes it a bit easier to get back into it. Stratton would play against your 3rd tall which is sometimes the resting ruck, at other times he plays on the most dangerous small from the opposition. Very underrated player!!

What if you playe with Lake, Gibson and Shoey? Would Stratton still be in the side.

Absolutely he is so versatile he can either play 2nd / 3rd tall or can play on smalls like Betts, Garlett, Walters, Ballantyne

Finished 4th in the B&F last year so I'm pretty sure he will keep his spot!!
How's his intercept marking? I know he took a good one against Geelong (the one time i actually notice him).
