Autopsy 3 Things you Learnt vs North

McVeigh was better than in previous weeks I thought, but yes definitely a quirk of the ratings system, Mitchell won the Goodes-O'Loughlin medal for BOG (there's a trivia question for the kids) at the end of the game and deservedly so, he seemed to be everywhere on Friday night.

Hey guys thought I would say congrats on the win. Always felt you guys were in control even during our 2nd quarter fightback. Been patchy for 5 or 6 weeks and when you come up against a good side, you pay for it.

Our big 3 have been beaten by undersized defences for the past month, I think that their effectiveness is starting to wear out a little. Doesn't help we don't have our HF pressure players, ball walked out a little too easily. Interestingly we have also opted for a smaller defence which is weird considering the forwards are getting much bigger but other than probably the Cats, defenders seem to be more mobile in most sides.

Would kill for one or two of your running mids, ours look like they are running on treadmills :(

Can't wait for the rematch in the arctic.

It's the player ratings algorithm, bedders. Goes purely off stats, and by individual positions. Hanners and mitchell couldn't knock McVeigh out because they didn't play in defence. They'd be competing with Gibbs, Pendlebury etc.

But yeah I thought McVeigh was a bit ordinary.

Extraordinary. I was livid with McVeigh most of the game (although I did miss that he was on Harvey and kept him quiet, the downside of TV). Mitchell must be shaking his head.

Anyhow, I guess we're not playing for inclusion in the player ratings team of the week.

The coaches seemed to think he went okay as well

Sydney vs North Melbourne

9 Hannebery (Syd)
8 Mitchell (Syd)
7 Kennedy (Syd)
2 Cunnington (NM)
2 McVeigh (Syd)
2 Tippett (Syd)

Possibilities
Hannebery 5-4
Mitchell 5-3
Kennedy 4-3
Cunnington 2-0 or 1-1
McVeigh 2-0 or 1-1
Tippett 2-0 or 1-1

McVeigh has done a couple of nice things per game which has allowed people to gloss over the rest of his game which has been utter shite.
A couple of nice things per game mixed in with utter shite is not acceptable from your captain.
Time for McVeigh to lift or spend some time in the 2's.

I haven't watched the replay. I will in the context of McVeigh playing on Harvey. The problem with watching on TV is you don't get a sense of the match ups. First thing I do watching live is note who's on who, which gives a much better understanding. Scott could well have given McVeigh 2 for shutting down Harvey.

I dunno, I kind of feel maybe I've been unfairly focussing on the couple of utter shite things he's doing mixed in with generally good stuff.

They're not going to drop him to the 2s, especially if he is getting coaches votes!

Watching live I thought he did more 'good stuff' than previous weeks, so maybe he just needed game time.

He is so far above NEAFL level it is a joke - seriously.

The issue is that he is performing below his best but, and it is a good but, he is getting better each week off his first ever major injury and basically no pre-season.

There is not a guy available in the 2's I would swap for him after watching the ressies last week. Who would come in and perform like he did on the weekend? Nothing we have there touches an 80% McVeigh. All he needs to do is remember to defend first and the rest follows.

Best game of the year for McVeigh so far on Friday night imo.

I was a little non-plussed after the game but having seen the replay, he did much better than I gave him credit for. He cocked up a few physical contests but he kicked two very good goals, kept his man (Brent Harvey no less) to 13 touches and no influence on the game and was pretty accurate when coming out of defensive 50.

Not sure you can reasonably ask for much more than that from a HBF.

All i ask is he show some balls in a one on one contest. He's a good player, its just his softness in those one one ones that irks me

It's a valid point that Thomas cops more than Selwood for milking free kicks. Christensen for the Lions received the most free kicks last year and is out in front again this year and he doesn't cop what Thomas does. Not sure it's a race thing in this instance.

I get what you are saying but lets be realistic though, look at it another way Thomas is does not get 30-40 possessions each week with his head over the ball in the heat of the contest like Selwood does. I think this is where guys like Selwood get a lot more leeway with the fans.

Finally got to watch the replay in full, here is my three things;

1. Rohan offers us another dimension in the forward line with pace, presence and pressure.
2. McGlynn has been ok since return but needs to improve with Papley waiting in the wings
3. Tippett has delivered more than I ever expected this year, I actually think its a little scary (for the opposition) how good he could be.

So if your courageous it's ok to milk free kicks.
He does not blatantly milk them to the extent of the one Thomas did on Friday night, if you think he does you are kidding yourself. The majority of frees he gets are more than warranted, besides every player looks to milk free kicks including our own. Are you aware that Hewitt is top 5 in league for head high contact? He is in front of Selwood!

My point was he gets more free kicks for head high tackles because he gets his hands on the ball more so its logical that he would receive more than Thomas.

WTF! Tippo poor bugger is guna have to kick a bag & get 40 HO's to get 3 votes FFS. He made a greater impact on the game than Macca or Cunners easily.

If the team is going to have standards then everybody needs to meet them.
If it was D.Towers instead of J.McVeigh he would been bagged from here to kingdom come for some of his pathetic efforts.

No doubt he is far above NEAFL level, but at the minute he is well below AFL level.

He probably gave him the points for the way Thomas beat him pointless in the marking contest or was it for the tackle on Petrie?

Some people just need a player to whine about every week.
