Almost losing faith with Mason. Glimpses of quality are rare now and is so soft in the contest. I want him to be a star but not sure how much longer I can believe. Hope the change of coach can get that next step out of him.

He's coming of his best month of footy, he played a poor one yesterday but now it's all about how he bounces back against the pies.
He certainly needs to close the gap between his good and poor games.

We got killed on the spread and it didn't help his cause much.

The GWS star studded line up down the other end weren't much better either.

Mason in 2019:

In Wins: 18.8 disposals, 5.6 marks, 2 goals
In Losses: 10.8 disposals, 2.7 marks, 0.5 goals

Against Top 8: 11.4 disposals, 3 marks, 1 goal
Against Bottom 10: 16.8 disposals, 4.8 marks, 1.3 goals

Plot out that matrix and you get a player who produces his best when the team is beating the comp's weaker teams.

Also known as - flat track bully. Often an unfair perjorative, but not fair off the mark here.

So yeah, I totally agree with you, he needs to close that gap. He also needs to work out what to do against better teams.

Put it in perspective

He’s only managed 50 games at AFL level due to injuries and form and he’s been with us for a longgg time

He has one awful game and understandably some pitch forks are out

He has the ability to play some great footy. I can’t stand the “avoid contests” style of play but as I have said before you can only imagine how little confidence he has in his body to crash contests etc. I mean he even came off with a calf in the 4th quarter, the poor bloke can’t catch a break

He did lay 5 tackles and I know that ain’t much but at least over the past 3 or so weeks he is showing way more intent. Get that right and he could be anything

It's very hard to play consistently well as a forward. You're going to have crap games, and that goes for all forwards. Mason has put together good footy for a month, give him the bye and see how he comes out against the Pies. The G will suit him and his massive aerobic capacity.

Looks to me like cherry picking stats.

How did the midfield go in the "in losses" weeks?

Pies is at docklands.

If you can work that out you're smarter than I.

The alternative analysis of those stats is that we need him to play well to win. He was a very good contributor in the three previous weeks, averaging three goals a game and giving a few away.

As with most of our losses this year, there was plenty of completely butchered forward 50 entries by our up-field players. Luke McDonald had four forward fifty entries, for example, and every one of them went over the heads of leading forwards and resulted in a turnover.

I dunno if it’s quite “no Mason, no North” but right now he’s definitely a barometer. And yeah, it’s not his fault when the midfield doesn’t deliver the ball. Up to a point though, because the midfield are going to struggle to deliver when forwards aren’t providing options. Chicken and egg to an extent.

However good players find a way. I must admit I found it frustrating that the bloke who changed the game in the 3rd quarter - Himmelburg - pretty much plays the same role as Mason. Not quite the same, but not far off.

He can play, no doubt. And while at this point in his development it’s good to see him making a difference in some games, to the point of being a match winner, his next step is to contribute more on the weeks when things aren’t going his way. He’s another one I’m yet to use a Sharpie to write his name on the whiteboard.

This bloke annoys me more than anyone on our list.

Not because i don't rate him, i do. Clearly has all the tools. It's just the constant goes hard one contest, looks great, then completely ignores the next which does my head in.

His best to worst is just far too large, interrupted seasons or not.

Hope Shaw can straighen him out for more consistently of effort and output.
