I'd like to see how that partnership with Dawson goes. I still think there's something to work with.

It's all good to expect that with a completely healthy list, Pink may need to make way for Logue, but when things are not going so well injuries-wise, how do we manage that and still make top 4 when that time comes? If he is not good enough, no matter how good Logue is or how good our better options are, we will need to keep looking for KPDs that have the ability to be serviceable as a stop-gap.

It comes back to how premierships are won. Some could argue that if you just have an elite 1s group, you can still win a flag. However, when it comes to backline players, we will be tested in terms of depth and we've seen what happened to Collingwood when they lose Moore or Murphy goes down. That's why we need to find the right balance and have good enough guys that can slot right in and play a role without hindering the system.

Guys like Pink (with Dawson seemingly elevating himself from depth to integrally part of the best 22) can be the success story for Clarko to fall back onto when Logue gets injured or when Corr goes down. These guys are there to at least match the forwards as long as the system up the ground is working.

KPDs have become the most crucial players since the introduction of the 6-6-6 rule. We saw how important Taylor was to GWS. They don't stay that far ahead without him.

The issue for us last year was we were losing a highly paid key defender to free agency AND we were at the bottom of the ladder which meant an incredible pick as compensation. If we were in the top 8 and the compensation pick was 10-20 it would have been a different story and we likely would have explored bringing in our own key defender free agent.

Hopefully Zurhaar signs and we can look at some free agents this year.

I don't understand the harsh criticism.

He clearly isn't a superstar, but that's not why we signed him.

Is he good enough will be decided in time, but it was a very tough initiation for any defender.

McKay regularly got beaten one on one and seemed utterly clueless with ball.

He's now getting paid near a million a year (ridiculous). so I'm happy to give Pink on base grade money his best shot to make it at the level, especially when we lack so much depth in key talls.

McKay was always pretty solid 1v1. His IQ to play in a team defence was his biggest issue defensively.
