Insightful Dermie

I agree with Dermie's comments on Ten today that the ball gets run too easily out of our forward line, the opposition links up through the centre and our backs haven't got a hope in hell.

Nearly every counter attack resulted in a score,

That's been the Swans winning game formula for TWO flippin' seasons !!!!! Any team that isn't accountable like North's insipid performance today will cop the same treatment.

Dermie is being paid to state the bleeding obvious !!

Another point is perhaps that with the amount of running our boys are required to do we just get far too tired in the legs. Some off our guys look like they haven't recovered from the first two games yet.
.

i had that thought as well. they look bloody tired out there!

I have no doubt that we work an extra 20% for every goal more than any other side. This is due to how much pressure we put on ourselves. We don't have forward targets who consistently take marks and our disposal into the forward 50 can be very suspect.

This is bound to cause us concerns in the future.

That Laids's game plan requires a lot of running off your oponent so consequently when there's a turn over the opposition links up without any pressure whatsoever.

While we don't have a properly functioning forward line, and while we don't have the ability to hit targets within our F50, running off opponents will create loose men who get the ball on the rebound. Once our guys have got into space, they have to be accurate to retain the ball, and our forwards have to make their marks stick. Many of our forays forward end about 20 metres out from goal with a dropped mark, or a loose ball off a pack, and if opposition defenders get the ball in these situations it's usually whisked to the other end pretty bloody quick.

If this is correct, it's very worrying four games into a season, and at a match where the players have had eight days rest.

And it could be that some or our great leaders of the past are perhaps feeling the affects of long careers at the top for a good ten years or so a bit earlier than they antisipated.

Arch has had a horror run this year, Stevo struggled today and King needed a big game to retain his spot and duly put in a shocker. Might be a bit early to call for heads, but if today was any indication they will be in a bit of trouble come the end of the year.

I really hope that if our old champs do get dropped that they don't retire mid year and that they go on and play at Port, they would be great for the kids comming through.

I think if it happens, they'll respond the right way and go on being great examples of professionalism and sportsmanship. No urgency for anyone to retire mid-way, as we have no rookies to promote.

I agree Woody it was pretty obvious that we couldn't run with them, however obvious or not he was still correct.

For what it's worth I've never been a big fan of Derm as a media commentator

Exactly.

So why does the watt issue keep coming up? (sorry i forgot about the 70s mentality!)

Nobody did well on Hall!

My sentiments exactly Tas. Very forgettable performance. We've always struggled with the Swans' flooding gameplan, and their run outta the backline killed us (and out of the centre too). They switched into top gear and we wandered around like lost souls. Their "multi short sharp handballs to free up a guy in space" tactic will surely be used against us again too.

I thought JYD was well out coached, but he IS still learning (and I hope we'll all learn from THAT trash yesterday), so I won't get stuck into him. Some of the efforts of the players were less than 100% (What's up with Kingy????????????)

Actually don't think our defence should be considered at fault in this case. Watt was the only guy we had that could go with Hall, and it doesn't help when there's little to no midfield pressure upfield and the supply was practically constant.

It always seems to be the same old story when we play the Swans...and we can't seem to counter the flooding tactic. It's pretty easy to get good run out of defence when you've got that kind of midfield support ahead of you to back you up. I'm guessing the only way we can counter it is to man up and try our hardest to hit targets up forward with precision. The important thing is to keep possession until good options are available. We can't just have sky high potshots into the forward line in hope. That's where we seem to fall down imo cos we can't adjust ourselves and be patient enough to search for targets and hit them.

Though I'm not liking the idea of him matching up on Gehrig, again we don't have anyone else who's big and fast enough to go with him.

kitty :)

PS - Totally agree with you Jess bout Teague (oui oui!) and Baird (nuh-uh) in the looks department. We always seem to find it most difficult to hold onto decent looking folk when we get them :D

Very, very true maybe Denis and Dean were getting jelous of the good looking boys but they seen to have kept Jess and Drew (Maybe they are just awsome players) :p Not that looks matter :p

I love Jess Sinclair #9

Watt

Shannon is still learning and will get better. It's a shame that Mick Martyn has divorced himself from the Roos (did somebody mention court action and super in the same sentence............boo Micky).

It would be nice to have someone like Mick to teach Watty the tricks of the trade.

I will never forget what Mick used to do at the G when the ball was down in our forward line. He would allow his opponent to stand alone in the Goal square, while Mick would stand on the 50 metre arc with his back to the play, looking up at the big screen with one eye (to see where the ball was), whilst having his other eye on his opponent. Very brave but also very clever!

How hard would it be for Watty to play a metre in front of his opponent in obvious leading situations? Is this too naive of me?
Help please!!!!!!!!!! The space in front is the real danger area; am I correct here? I can't remember too many forwards kicking goals from where the cheer squad sits.

Shannon has done an OK job and will only get better. Let's stick with him as I believe he will keep getting better.

Wasn't this the problem at the end of the Pagan years? Wasn't this meant to be fixed with the new game plan?

Working harder than other teams inevitably comes as a consequence of having inferior skills. Theoretically, footy is an easy game. If you can keep the ball off the other team, you can work it into a scoring position without them touching it. Then it's an easy game.

Every time the ball is in dispute however, you have to work hard and expend energy to get it. Therefore the more the ball is in dispute, the harder you work for your goals. Teams with better skills can play keepings off more often and so score goals with more ease.

So, there's 2 ways to win:

1 - Get your skills better than the other team.
2 - Pressure the other team until they come down to your level.

At the moment, our skills aren't great, so we rely on 2 to win. Last week, there was no pressure so we got caned. Simple as that.

Nah, of course they don't ;) And yes Jess and Drew happen to be excellent players as well (thank god).

Of course that explains why Peter Schwab doesn't have a problem recruiting the pretty boys at the Hawks...he kinda fits in with them :p

One other thing about Shannon, do you know he has not had one tackle in the first 4 rounds!

Not one, zero, zip, zilch....

Shameful really.

Micky Martyn was never a prolific tackler either. 1994 (7), 95 (6), 96 (14), 97 (19), 98 (11), 99 (16), 2000 (7), 2001 (11), 2002 (14). Shannon had 29 tackles last season.

I also remember Micky having quite a few bags kicked on him. 10 by Lockett in 96 is one that sticks out, but I think guys like Milton-Connell also kicked a number on him. Even Dench had a couple of bags kicked on him in the Seventies. Shannon is in his second full season as our Fullback and is showing improvement. In the first four games, I haven't seen too many successful leads (by his opponent) out in front of goals, unless they have been outside the 50. Personally I think he is doing a very good job in a very difficult position, but isn't always getting the support he requires further up the field.

It's good that we have this forum, because my negative slant can be wholeheartedly wrong!

You're absolutely right DEVO, he could prove to be a good FB; I just get impatient.

Cheers.
