Watt is one player who probably won't be advantaged by our new run out of defence that Laids' has us doing. Last year he looked OK. Thats because our back players didn't have the finely tuned instruction they have now. Watt 2006 would always bomb it long, and he looked OK doing that. But now he has to play by the team rules of running and handballing, usually under pressure. So far, players like Gibbo and Firrito have thrived; Watt has not.

Uncle Leo, where were you over the last 2 weeks when the club has been winning, are you just posting to downgrade our team, have some respect and look at the positives.

Watt tried to do the right thing tonight, his handballing let him down, but he does have the speed, shouldnt be to hard for him to get better at handballing, so he could turn things around

Watt was rubbish tonight. He is a 3rd or 2nd tall defender or he doesn't play. This playing him on the wing nonsense has to stop.

And anyone who thinks Spud was rubbish tonight should give up and watch another sport. I can think of one actual contest he lost and about 10 where he won the footy and took it out of the area.

WHAT BLOODY GAME ARE YOU GUYS WATCHING!

He was far from our worst tonight and his run was a big bonus to us. Stop blaming Watt all the time for the team's performance and have a look at the rest of them, starting with the Captain who was largely embarrassing. I do not care about how many possies he gets, nor his hard work, he is the pin up boy for the Roos problems.
Finally something I can agree with you on.

On that note, I'm off to bed.

Mate, i cannot see his role in this current line up....

He didnt actually have a player to man up on yesterday and was basically playing the running half back role, a role that should be played by either JWS or my man trotter...

when Trotter stands up and takes Watts place I will agree with you... but until Trotter shows more then he has so far Watt is still my preferred option... :D :D

I have to agree with you 100% even though Trotter is an absolute gun, he Should've done more to prove himself in his first game of the year in this NAB cup game, and also in all of the 5 games he played with very little opportunity.....

honestly what I have seen is no better then what I saw in Shannon's first five games... he looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights most of the time... but then that is just my opinion... and I have very little say... just like you... so we will have to wait and see...

trotter was better than watt on the night, didnt f*** up once. trotter had 9 kicks 8 handpasses to watts 3 kicks, 16 hanpasses. trotter>watt. but i agree with whoever keeps on posting about JWS taking watt's spot. when JWS is fit it will be bye bye what?

i thought Watt played pretty well. In fact, I thought the whole backline did a good job together considering the number of inside 50's Carlton had. Anyone got the figure?
If the midfielders were able to put the pressure on like they did in the first couple of games then we would have won. It was lost in the middle, not in the backline.

he is tragic, so disappointing to constantly watch him screw up. As a person I'm sure he's a great guy but I can't stand watching him anymore

Relax abit. Its only preseason. Dont get all hyped about a game when the season hasnt started.

So you liked the handpass to Eddie Betts that set up a goal ?

No...but its not worthy of the treatment he is getting here. Try and watch a replay and watch how many players made errors that cost us goals.

I was once very heavily on the anti-Watt bandwagon, but I think he has improved significantly and is a key part of the backline at this point in time.

I agree with the point made earlier in the thread that the rise of Smith may signal the fall of Watt. Plenty of water to go under the bridge first though.

Absolutely agree, very little a backman can do when the midfield is being given so much lattitude.

Why do so many people defend Watt? I dont get it personally.

I'm with you. How this guy gets a game week in week out has me beat. I have never seen a guy like him not know what to do when he gets the ball. He continues to make mistake after mistake. He has been given that many chances over the years!!! I have even heard our own players bag this guy. The sooner Dean Laidley wakes up to himself on this bloke the better.
I guess we will just have to look forward to the end of the year when John Longmire is given the coaching job to delist this guy and others like him.

Oh by the way im calling an early shot for the club to come out mid year to say that Dean Laidley will not be given another contract.. Thank god..

Ok then.. how is he a backman when he doesnt have an opponent though... Who was his opponent again? Oh wait! He played loose man the whole night!

True - but when he did get the ball he looked like an under 11s with this first touch - what do I do now? Indecisive, poor disposal, even seemed to panic. I'm with the majority - he just can't play football, however we all of a sudden we seem a little short on the backline and thats what is saving him at the moment.

Again though, he didnt play on an opponent, and will never be assigned to a major role in the backline due to his shortfalls in recent years... His role would be to runt he ball out of the defence, yes he can run but deliver no, Riggio or Trotts for mine, and if Laids doesnt have faith in either of the pair then wait for Smith in round 4 to knock Watt off his pirch...

Then he should have had more room, more time to run and clear. That makes his game even worse.
