Re: 36. Shannon Watt

Take note Melly. I too will be keeping a keen eye on one Shannon Watt.

So far this preseason I've been impressed with Watt's ability to break out of the back line with blistering pace to only handpass the ball backwards.

Shannon, if you happen to read this, please, please kick the ball as far as you can if you're not sure what to do with it.

AFL Website 2007 Kangaroos Preview

Shannon Watt - Likely to be relied upon by Laidley to fill important roles in both attack and defence. Consistency seems to be Watt's weakness. But his potential to be a game-breaker means he is an important player for the Kangaroos in their attempt to climb up the ladder this season.

Re: 36. Shannon Watt

I beleive that Shannon Watt is one of the most Underrated players at the club, in the league for that matter.

Where is the world coming too? Is global warming having an effect on you? If it is, tell me so i can email the former Vice President of the USA so he can help you out!

Watt should play when we play against teams with more genuine tall forwards or when we play at TD.

He is not a prolific ball gatherer but he has been reliable at half-back on a tall forward.

I think Watt, Brown and Green have to really show a lot from limited opportunities because I think the other kids will be pushing them hard for positions on the ground.

When Smith and Gibson return from injury that pressure will increase even further. Watt just hasn't been aggressive enough, he is built like Tarzan but plays like Jane, doesn't use his bulk, doesn't use his speed and rebound out of defence. We need the second tier guys to stand up and lead the way and not rely on the same guys (Harvey, Grant and Simpson) to do it week in and week out.

watt's problem is he cant read the play and he turns the ball over too much. i dont care how fast he is if he cant read the play he gets beaten on the lead to many times. this is outstanding news that he wasnt picked now lets hope the youngsters perform

Id have Watt in the starting 22. The only tall backman we have coming through is Lachie and he has played a grand total of zero games.

Definately needed in the 22.

Not the biggest Watt fan by any stretch of the imagination....but considering our back stocks at the moment, a must in the 22 against a team with a tall forward...ie; Rocca!

Petrie will play on Rocca. And smash him.

Based on current form (he had some shockers in the pre-season) he's not in our best 22. And he's the sort of fringe player that can't get away with too many bad games.

I'd certainly say he was in our best 22 in the previous years though. In fact, before the rise of Petrie, I'd say he's been our best KP backman for the last few years. Perhaps reflecting how poor our KP backs have been.

I didn't want him in the side, but thought it would be a necessity.

Very comfortable with Petrie on Rocca but I am unsure what we are going to do now when Fraser goes forward. He is 202cm tall and smart. Surely that is too tall for Spud, if we want to give Brown a chance to perform he has to play in the one position.

Does that mean Hamish or Moran have to follow him down there? Hansen? It is a little troubling.

I'd say the coaching staff are taking a few punts in the hope that it could get us on some sort of a roll for the year. They're banking on H dominating in the ruck and causing Fraser to have to do the ruck work. Personally, for the first game of the year I'm not too upset about this sort of thinking. A couple of very strong wins could lead to anything, whereas if it doesn't work out, we can adjust after a game or two.

I woudln't be surprised to see Moran following Fraser around - except for a prolonged stint in the ruck. Is tall and quick enough to go with him, obviously just lacks experience - but there'll be planty of that happening for Moran over the next year.

That leaves Spud on Cloke (50/50 I'd say, depending how deep in the forward line Cloke plays) and Petrie on Rocca (Petrie should win that one). Back up plan being Hansen or Brown to switch with Moran if he is copping a towelling - although i would rather see Brown left at half forward for as long as possible.

Full forward. Straight out of the square. I have a feeling he will do alright if he is left a full forward all day...he has a pretty good round 1 history.

He can go scoreless and do his job. I want busted packs, constant spillages and at least two Collingwood defenders injured or out of action for a quarter Everything a 105 kilo, relatively mobile, 150 game 25yo should provide.

If he doesn't do this and continues with his great impression of a 11yo female netballer, he is scratched until mid year as far as I am concerned. If the loss of Thompson and our need for leadership doesn't spur him on, his career is basically over IMHO.

Hear hear.

I am sure Watt can take comfort that the last time he was left out like this, our defence leaked like a shonky tap. Not saying he should be a certainty because he is older, but his pre season hasn't been that bad. In fact against the Blues he was only one of 2 or 3 that provided any run.
