I agree, a good start to the regular season for Watt. He did have an legitimate opportunity to knock Riewoldt out of the game in the first quarter which he did not take advantage of.

At this stage, I would like to see a bit more mongrel in his play, only time will tell if he develops that or not.

Been watching the replay on and off today and yes, he was reasonable.

His marking and play reading were alot more improved, although Penny is hardly the classiest of opponents (yet).

However he still looks a little unsure of himself when he has the ball in his hands, although i can live with him always dishing off short to a Sinclair, Makepeace or Ralwings etc. But his kicking is sometimes a little suspect and not overly intelligent.

And i think he really needs to work on his preparedeness to tackle when an opponent has the ball close to him. He instead always seems to try and run to where he thinks the opponent will turn to. Just put the head down and ram the shoulder into their rib cage son!!

All in all, an encouraging start though.

yup yup i can agree there, he hasn't got any agro in him at the moment, he needs to be crashing bodies like brown does...we need to get brown to teach him a couple of things.....

his kicking is too panicked, he needs to relax more when he's on the field....and yes his opponent is not very good up forward, and i was a little worried by how far away he is from his opponents when the ball is a kick away....and his inability to just go for the ball, he's more intent on shepharding the man away from the ball rather than picking up the ball and getting rid of it.....hopefully it's something he can learn soon

Just want too ask people opinion on this so called footballer that plays at full back for us you put one little pinky finger on him and he falls over unbelieveable he really has too take a look at himself or he will be gone !!!

I have too say this Michael Voss is a absolute champion player he makes similar players who play in his position look pathetic .

I was proud too be a North Supporter, also signed up member too.

The jury is still out. He`s doing better than last year and he may develop into a footballer, but he`s not there yet IMO. Kingsley beat him to the ball early and the delivery was shocking later. He was one of Leppa`s victims last night. On the plus side, he`s backing himself more and at least looks more confident despite some mistakes and poor decision making. I`m happy to give him every chance to make, but he does need to improve.

I think your being a bit hard on Watt. He didn't do a lot wrong last night and his position is certainly not in doubt at this stage of the season. Important to note that two of the Leppitsch goals were kicked on Leigh Brown (who was way to slow for leppitsch) before Watt was moved on to him.

Watt is getting better; he is improving- slowly, but steadily..

Took some marks last night that I dont think he would have taken last year.. or even earlier this year.

He'll get there.

as one of watts baggers i am impressed on his improvement,

put plenty of preassure on opponents around the ground believe it was chris scott that he rode beautifully into the ground after a mark and made sure hed remember it,

i thought he played a pretty good game last night, still the same problems with his game ie going to ground too easily, always being second to react, needing to improve his kicking on the run but i thought he did outstandingly last night, how many goals were kicked on him? not very many and he kept leppitsch quiet when moved on to him and took a very important contested mark in the back pocket, i think he grew in confidence throughout the game and we'll start to see him really blossom into a player later this year

He took a cpl of telling marks and also is looking more confident every week.....he certainly is contributing more than Brown atm

And you have played full back in the AFL have you? Don't you know the pressure he is under in this position. I think not!

Hypocrite!

Has done very little wrong this season, and I thought he played OK last night.

His run through the midfield followed by a poor kick sums him up at this stage IMO, plenty of potential but still lacking a bit of polish.

I'm not a huge Watt fan but it looks liek he's turned the corner. I've always thought he was out of his depth - but not last night. Showed enough to suggest he may be OK

FWIW I reckon Shannon should be persisted with. He has probably been a little lucky that a couple of his opponents haven't taken their chances this year, but he has also shown signs of improvement and greater confidence. His attack on the footy is inconsistent at times - sometimes he is hesitant, but on the odd occasion he attacks it with gusto and looks almost unstoppable.
A criticism is that he is still not blocking his opponent's leads or reacting fast enough once they have already led, but hopefully that will come with more game time. Eventually his anticipation of a quick lead will be far greater.
As one who called for his inclusion all last year, I should be happy that he is being given a go at last. Not sure where he'll fit in when Arch comes back though, particularly given Baird's and Colbert's form.

I still believe the boy is a forward... he is a natural athlete not a footballer... the modern footballer as we know it... he will learn it will just take time... the worst mistake he made last night was late in the last quarter when he lead to fair up the ground after Baird? had marked... and allowed his opponent to cover an unmarked King... but that is what I mean about being an athlete... at the moment he doesn't have the footy smarts that an 18 year old Wells does... but this will come... and when it does he will be a monster of a footballer...

That`s a big call Rooboy. I hope ur right though.

I think a few people on this thread should get hold of the video of the game last night.

Shannon Watt was bloody good. This was reinforced when Laidley looked to him to quell Leppitsch.

What about Leigh Brown? I for one was disappointed with his game. He may be down on form, in which case he could of at least sat a few Lions on their rear-end. There were plenty of opportunities last night, but he appeared to pull out of contested situations.

Please note I am a fan of Leigh Brown and am not advocating his omission. The big fella is still trying to work out where he fits into Laidley's grand scheme. I would just like him to take a few angry pills before each game, and add some real mongrel to the team.

I see what the Dockers mean about him being too slow to be full back. I think for the first time in my life I was screaming at the TV to F'n put Watt on that guy (Leppitsch) who is tearing us apart

I think we stil have to accept that Watt is not a superstar and full backs don't need to be superstars. They just have to do a job and that seems to be what Shannon Watt is doing.

He is doing enough as we speak

He is improving every week.

He holds his spot.
