And Coranzo, it'd be good if you could post something constructive on this board rather than just sniping at people who have views that you don't agree with. Any more of it and you'll be taking a 2 week holiday.

thankyou

Just a couple of observations:

Moti you've done yourself and your argument no favours in that massive over reaction to what was admitedly a pretty ordinary win. But I tend to agree with your call on Harris. He could really develop into an elite specialist centreman with more game time and persistence from the powers that be.

Moomba, can you give me some hard concrete examples of this lack of a defensive side you have been going on about for the past year. Last week doesn't count cos I agree he was woeful on two specific occasions. But you have often made this observation, so I'd like to understand where you're coming from. FWIW, I can't imagine any examples you raise could be much worse than some of those Brent Harvey and Shannon Grant committed over the early parts of their career.

From memory (Carlos please correct me if I am wrong) either Harris himself or Laidley told Carlos that he was pretty much restricted to a ballgetting role because he tended to lose sight of where his opponent was, preferring to ball chase instead. I'll try and find the post, but it may have been lost in one of the recent purges.

There are a few examples that come to mind, one of which was against Brisbane last year where he was given a job on Pike in the last quarter (from admittedly dodgy memory again), but was dragged shortly after after Pike had 5 or 6 touches with Harris nowhere near.

While I have criticised Harvey and Grant in the past for their lack of accountability it is worth noting that neither would be considered viable options for defensive roles either.

yah i remember that game and it's partly Bible's fault for putting him in a role which isn't his strength. like you were saying it's like using grant and harvey for defensive roles.

Carlos v Laidley

There is a bit of it in this thread, again Carlos please correct me if I have taken things out of context but there were a couple of quotable quotes in it. It's probably worth reading the whole thread again, I reckon it was one of the best I have seen on BF.

I asked him whether he honestly thought Shane Clayton was a better option than any of Harris, Watson or S.Motlop. He only said that Clayton follows his instructions and does worry about his opponent and as long as he did that, he'd be better placed for a senior game AT THIS STAGE.

Said his biggest issue as a coach was getting players find the balance between hunting the footy and worrying about their opponents. I asked if that was what he meant by the often used "my way" line of comment, and he snarled and said "you work it out".

He had only just finished telling me that one of Harris' main issues is that he just hunts the footy and is ball hungry

Basically there is plenty of other reasons apart from this thread why I have the view I have, some from seeing him play, some from other threads on BF, some from discussions with other Roo supporters. It is worth noting that I haven't seeing Harris play for half a season, and I expect that he would have improved in plenty of different areas. However I think the club have worked out what his best role is, and they are grooming him to play that role when Stevo goes.

I know it seems like I am always bagging him, and I don't rate him but it's not the case. I am more than happy with his progress at the club, and am comfortable that the eventual loss of one of the best players I have ever seen at the club from the midfield can be covered to a large extent by Harris.

I do think that the criticism Laidley gets regarding his treatment of Harris is unwarranted, and I think some of us have placed expectations on him that Harris will find impossible to live up to.

Not to drudge up bad memories, but the 100+ loss against the Swans when we kicked 3.18 was probably worse...

No doubt Harris will continue to improve and get more ground time, he showed why in the last quarter.

Was that at Princes Park? I remember a shocking game there against the Swans. It was terribly windy, and Lockett had about 9 to halftime. I went home at 3/4 time, as I was sick of seeing Roos run from the backpocket picking up easy possesions, whilst ignoring his opponent.

No mate, the game where we kicked 3.18 was in Sydney a couple of years ago. Might have even been the last game of the failed Sydney 'experiment' at the SCG.

Game you've mentioned was in '96, got a 70-odd point flogging and Lockett ended up with 10.

Boomer said on 774 after the game that he doesn't usually get many clearances. So I can understand why JYD might be playing him outside the square.

The problem with having our taggers start outside the square is that then we dont have anyone minding the oppositions best and we're giving them an opportunity to shake the tag (if only for a short while). We cant afford to give elite midfielders that kind of latitude.

For me, no problem with him doing that. Grant is better out wide while Boomer seems to be playing outside the square an awful lot.

The guys who should be in the square are: Simmo, Harro, Grant, Spud, Boomer.

Guys like Rawlings who tag should pick the tag up after the bounce. Maybe then move Harro to HF where that posiotion usually moves up the ground anyway.

Gee I would have loved to be able to put him in there. We needed a classy but tough player.

Grima did well though and should be in next week, King to make way.

Great game from hale, not brilliant, but will learn more as he is played more.

This is from the North website -

CHANGES: Kangaroos Harris (leg) replaced in selected side by Grima

_______

Can anyone be more specific with details about Harris' injury? I hope it's only minor and that he will be back next week. We certainly need him.

agree with moti. would have liked harro in today although i also thought grima was ok.
he ought to come in next week when stevo gets a rest courtesy of the tribunal

my brothers and i all thought that we really need harro out there. very frequently when the ball hit the ground and a swan player got possesion all the other swan players around would peel off and they'd set up play by a chain of hand balls. just a bit more grunt when the ball hits the ground and the hesitation by the opposition would make it that little bit more difficult to set play up. harro would have made us much more competitive.

Agree with all of the above... just throw the kid in the middle of the ground... and only when he says he is tired let him have a breather on the pine... we look so much better when he is in the guts...

If Laids is trying to turn him into the complete footballer... give up he is just what we yearn for... was G.Williams the complete footballer??? NO... but did it stop him???

It was announced at the after match function yesterday that Harro strained a quad muscle at training during the week and wasn't likely to come up this week either. Blake was only put in the side when Harro pulled out . I guess we will get an injury update on Harro during the week.

Our tall options are also fairly limited at the moment going from what we saw in the first 4 weeks, so it wouldn't surprise me if Rocca came in for Stevo.

It is also a huge plus for us that Grima was able to come in and do ok first up. Going forward that will help as we'll have an extra tried player to choose from later on in the year. We already know what Harro is capable of, whereas Grima was probably at least another month away from playing. Now that the issue has been forced on us we have another inside player (albeit more of a Grant type than a Stevo type) ready to come in when needed.
