Knee surgery puts Ladson out for season

Jennifer Chiu | July 18, 2009

HAWTHORN defender Rick Ladson will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his right knee on Thursday.

It continues a frustrating year for the premiership player, who was only three games into a comeback from a left-knee injury.

Rick Ladson
His season never got going. He had some knee surgery in January which held him back. He played after the mid-season break, but only managed three games before his other knee got sore. He’s had surgery on that, but he’s back up and running now. He’ll be in good shape to start the pre-season, which will be a nice change for him

Stephen Gilham is one of four Hawks who have re-signed with the Club.

Four Hawthorn players have re-signed with the Club, as the Hawks prepare for the 2010 season.

Premiership defenders Rick Ladson and Stephen Gilham have penned new two-year deals while Brent Guerra and Simon Taylor have also had their contracts extended.

"Luke Hodge, star forward Lance Franklin, hardman Jordan Lewis, Rick Ladson, Steve Gilham, Xavier Ellis, Trent Croad, Tasmanian Grant Birchall and ruckman Robert Campbell all went under the knife following the grand final win over Geelong or were struck down with injury in the lead-up to the '09 NAB Cup."

A HAWTHORN premiership player that coach Alastair Clarkson said "the footy world had written off" is ready to break loose in Launceston.

Defender Rick Ladson will start the long haul back in the NAB Cup opener against Richmond after being restricted by surgery on both knees last season.

Ladson tested his knees in an intraclub match a week ago and, more importantly, experienced nothing more the next day than body soreness.
"He'll play and we'll slowly build him up over the course of the next few weeks," Clarkson said yesterday.

Ladson's knee problems were indicative of the Hawks' wretched luck with injuries last season - he had surgery in January, returned mid-season to play three games to pass the 100-game milestone and then was sidelined by the other knee for the rest of the year.
His return is another positive sign of a list that's much more healthy than this time last year.

Great job Henry Jr thanks mate noose....:thumbsu:

Re: 4. Rick Ladson

Ah Laddo how we missed you last year.

Nab Cup Round 1: Hawthorn vs Richmond

Kicks: 8
Handballs: 5
Disposals: 13
Marks: 3

Played a solid game without being outstanding. Provided great running and became the link man out of the back line.

Made every possession count and delivered it lace out on every occassion.

Good times ahead from Rick :thumbsu:

Despite Luke Hodge’s run out of defence, the back line is perceived as a bit of a weakness. Without Croad, the key position stocks aren’t great but it is an area that will only improve this year given last year Stephen Gilham lined up just ten times, Ryan Schoenmakers was in his first season and Gibson was at North Melbourne.
Of the smaller types, the return of guys like Xavier Ellis and Rick Ladson is a definite bonus.

Re: 4. Rick Ladson

Hawthorn Vs Western Bulldogs (RND 2 Nab Cup)

Kicks 6
Handballs 7
Marks 2
Tackles 1
FF 1
FA 1

Dreamteam 40pts

Thought Laddo (along with plenty of his makes) were pretty sloppy on Friday night (not in the HBD type of way either).

However, you can see from high up in the stands the value he gives the team with his run and carry. He will be better for the hitout and look to hit back hard against the Roo's this week.

Hawks embark on an odyssey

Hawthorn players Rick Ladson and Taylor Duryea recently visited Odyssey House to assist in a training session with their football team, the Odyssey Blues.

The session was timely for the Blues, having won only one out of eight games in the Reclink competition this season.

Ladson and Duryea not only assisted with training, but also conducted a compelling question-and-answer session, explaining the sacrifices they had to make for football, as well as the setbacks they have been faced with over the years.

Re: 4. Rick Ladson

Round 1 2011 Crows V Hawks AAMI Sat 26th March

First half by Rick was awesome, bought back memories of the early days...
He wasnt alone in struggling in the second half, though - one hopes that the first hald he had is a sign of things to come. Went in with reckless abandon and the team were up and flying with great drive out of defence thanks to efforts from Rick.

Rick's stats were:
13 Kicks, 11 handpasses, 2 marks, 5 tackles. He received 1 freekick and had 1 awarded against him.

Re: 4. Rick Ladson

Round 13, 2011 season

Hawthorn v Gold Coast at Aurora Stadium.

Rick Ladson returns to the senior team for his first game since injury in Round 7 against Port Adelaide.

Ladson replacing Brent Guerra who perforated an ear drum in an off the ball incident with Geelong's Joel Selwood the week before.

Unfortunately for Rick not to be a happy ending for his 7th game of the season tearing a hamstring and being substitued off in the 3rd quarter.

Match stats: 7 kicks 4 marks, 4 handballs and 3 tackles in the 79 point win over Gold Coast.

No injury comes at a good time and this certainly is the case for Laddo. Having been named emergency for a number of games prior to this he will again have to fight his way back into the senior team when he is fit to resume.

Advised by those in the know at Box Hill that his attitude has been brilliant. Example - giving his best on ground performance award that Box Hill give after every game to a young up and coming player rather than just accepting the award for himself.
