Imagine being told in 2012 that in three years time we'd have Nick Dal Santo, Robbie Nahas, Shaun Higgins, Jarrad Waite and Farren Ray on the list. Odd crew when you think about them independently but had a plan for all of them.
The good thing is So Far every single one of them has done the job for us Higgins was recruit of the year.

The pensioners jokes will continue but our Recruiters/Coaches have been spot on!
And if Farren Ray gives us Depth then i can live with that...

More surprised than upset.

But can somebody explain to me why we still call this a "rookie" draft or we can put someone like Ray or Nahas (or even Daw) on the "rookie" list.

Are they rookies? seems stupid to me.

inb4 someone says "because AFL"
Because everyone drafted goes onto the rookie list. Can't be too hard to understand?

Yeah, thanks. So they could call it, say.. the veterans list and because everybody drafted went on to it they would be veterans. Yep, got it now.

For what it's worth, I really think people here are underrating Ray. You don't play 205(?) games by being a dud. And he hasn't just played all those games in dud sides either. The dogs when he was there and the Saints during the Lyon years were consistently top 4/finals contenders.

Just like Nahas, I think he's a player that is being unfairly canned before he gets a chance, and no doubt a change of environment by going to a contending club rather than St Kilda who have struggled in recent years I feel may give him a renewed enthusiasm (if he was even starting a downward trajectory in his career, which Saints posters seem to think isn't actually the case).

If called upon, he'll be a solid, hardworking player with lots of invaluable experience and is a good, cheap replacement for the midfield depth we lost from trading an experienced player in Bastinac.

Yeah I think a lot of those that have critiqued North's recruiting have an outdated idea of list management. Age profile only really matters if you can't develop your youth or bring in new players from other clubs to replace retiring players. On this front North is yet to really be tested but as long as we are going deep into September we're an attractive destination.
If Brad wasn't getting us into at least prelims considering how much experience we have and our relative success with keeping players free from injury then those criticisms become valid.

I like the cut of your jib

Welcome Farren, looks like I'm driving your bus. Much better than extending Max Warren for another year.

Toot Toot, let's ride to the GF!

Not too disappointed in this signing as the draft is obviousely not very deep but in saying that, disappointed we didnt go for adcock instead and let him go doggies.

Okay so after a few hours of letting of steam, after my initial anger at this recruitment move, I have had some time to think about it and this is my take...

You don't play 200+ games if you're no good, and if anything he can help young player off-field, in a developmental role, which I am fine with. He also makes for okay backup if we have an enormous injury list. However there is one thing that will seriously bother me, and I think these feelings are echoed by much of the board, and that is... If this bloke gets a game ahead of Dumont, Mullett, Wood, Turner, Francis, Hibberd etc, it will really bother me. Unless Farren Ray is getting 50+ a game at VFL level, under no circumstances, should their development be hindered to try and scrape wins. FYI introducing Farren Ray is not the answer, and he's not going to seriously help us win games.

Ofcoarse this is just my opinion, but I feel that it is quite warranted and understandable.

Agree with all of that.
I would even class him as an upgrade on Bastinac. He is certainly more courageous and a tad quicker.

The rebuild is over, it's time to try and win a flag in what will be a very very very even 2016. There is no standout team out there so we need to go all out, and if that means recruiting battle hardened, mature age rookies on minimum wage over some skinny and gangly 18 year old kid who might play a game in 2018 then so be it. **** what everyone says, some mid range clubs won't have a 1st round draft pick in the next few years, we still do. Our recruiting over the past 7 years cannot be questioned. Way more right than wrong.

Because of future draft pick trading?

Ray interview with NMFC

He seems like a quality bloke and he certainly has the experience and class we may need down the track. The Higgo/NDS links, as well as the fact he's only taking up a rookie spot, make his selection worth the punt IMO now the dust has settled.

Must be related to the bloke that sings this song.

They're cousins. Douchebag in question is Mark McGrath, who coincidentally is the brother of Tim McGrath. So obviously, Farren's connection to North runs as deep as anyone at the club.

Jesus. I never thought about that. Arden street would have been burned down.
