While I think Warner's contribution today surpassed most of our expectations (and all things considered, it's probably a pass grade).... God his overall career record really doesn't look great away from home:

Home2011-2023559575139335*58.39 avg
Away2012-202350951295314531.41 avg

It's a good failure. I'd want 70 to 100 from the openers combined. Wasn't to be but Davey's runs mean we go in level at lunch.
Most players are able to get in the 30s. Than many go on with it, something Warner NEVER does over there. Marnus has had 30s all series and has copped it.
30 isn’t a pass we just hold him at a very low standard.
Do more Davey, you can’t not get a big score in 29 away ashes attempts and be forgiven for a 30.

They have Ben Stokes, to be fair...

At the risk of jinxing, I think this is a clear bat first pitch however with iffy weather the last few days England see their best chance to win the game by chasing. I think that makes sense. Pat said he wouldn't mind bowling but I call bluff, we'd be happy with a draw as the Oval looks like it might be weather affected too.

There's not much between the 2 teams so far ...either team could be leading .

I liked going to the cricket there light rail to the ground , makes it easy .

This was no doubt the plan, but Wood hasn't been as fierce as he was, Broad has been average, Anderson and Woakes are just plodding, and Ali.......well, Ali has been Ali so far.
Agreed. England's attack was very flat in that session. Broad and Anderson got a few to hoop around but that was about it. Warner's wicket was soft but at least he contributed 32 so that's probably about breakeven for us. But there was nothing really from Woakes to think he could roll through us.

Funnily enough, Smith basically gifted his wicket first ball and Wood was napping in the outfield (flat with the ball in hand and unsurprisingly his mind wasn't on the job in the field).

So despite the above, we should have been 3 down with half an hour to survive before lunch and potentially a really tricky spot.

Huge chance to grind them into the ground here.

I wonder why poms bowl first and Chase the game...
Home tests ...you wanna get on top ...

Unders for them so far ...high RR while bowling...
I think having a couple of remarkably successful run chases probably skews their thinking.

Also it probably fits in with their "who gives a ****" coward's attitude. Batting first is an advantage if you apply yourself and play well. Batting last you can play well or poorly and you'll either get an easy run chase or a hard one that you won't get criticised for failing at, "they gave it crack!" or get ovations for chasing down.

Yep - it's crucial that they maintain their concentration and we carry the bat to stumps.

Hope these two go big, the pitch looks fine and they both look in good touch. Both of these guys have looked in control a lot this series but Labs especially has failed to make it count.

He's rotating the strike well now though and Smith looks mostly in control except that very wide ball he chased that came off the toe of the bat and close to Woakes.

Yep. Lifeless pitch. Two best batters are settled and there is ability batting down to 10. No excuse not to punish them for sending us in batting 1.5 days in a weather affected match. Make the Poms panic when they get a chance to bat
This is the plan, bat long and deep to force them to play rashly as they'll need to get their runs quickly which will produce errors we can capitalise on.

Broad's last white ball game for England was in 2016, Anderson's last white ball international was in 2015. That'll extend their test careers.
Being able to get wickets at ~130 clicks on softer English wickets doesn't batter the body too much either.

Very good bowlers, no doubt, but they definitely get to take advantage of the conditions they are presented with.

FWIW Jimmy might have the aggregate but Broad's performances in Ashes and his ability to dig deep in tough bowling conditions put him above Anderson IMO.
