He could maybe be a bit more quiet about it, but obviously he and his family take serious issue with MFC managing his injury vs Collingwood.

Am in the medical profession myself and was a specialist in abdominal & thoracic surgery - spleens are no joke, they are extremely vascular and bleed profusely. Usually a rupture requires complete surgical removal and some degree of permanent immune system support, at a minimal a group of vaccinations post-operatively. Preserving the spleen after a laceration is a great outcome but the procedure sounds very traumatic. It's confusing to me as to why he wasn't under a general anaesthetic.
The ribs and punctured lung are also dangerous but generally heal with time and some supportive care (intercostal drainage catheter etc).

I'm shocked that MFC sent him back onto the ground in severe discomfort and it was interesting to hear a Pie player (name escapes me) say that they were concerned about him on the field and felt that they shouldn't tackle or bump him too hard out of duty of care.


Regardless it sounds like there's a lot of water to go under the bridge for Christian and his family and he just wants to leave the club. I think the public opinion of him might be different if he was quiet about it but I guess it's his style to share and talk openly which should be celebrated IMO. Just a shame that the media are making a big show of it - this is why Dusty stopped speaking to them altogether.


Just wish him the best in his recovery, physical and mental. Would be a shame not to see him return to his peak powers.

You’re following the media narrative. Nibbler bleeds red and blue and was the whipping boy at this club for many years but worked through it to be a very good player and clubman. The club letting him go home after his services shows massive maturity and respect. Kosi’s home sick but he hasn’t gone yet and Im sure, petty style he won’t. Petty ended up staying and signing by the way.

While i think a lot of this is media beat up, no doubt there are some issues, but i still think it's never as bad as what the media portrays it to be, I'd be shocked if a team like North weren't getting in his ear. Yeah, not big crowds or the social media presence he's after, but Clarkson and a ton of early draft picks running around could be tempting. I mean if Butters all of a sudden was in the media headlines like this, every club regardless of size or ladder position would be on the phone to him putting in a sales pitch. Who knows, if he actually is that pissed off, then maybe one club like North might get a bite. Big cash and draft capital to get it done.

The injury scenario could have happened at any club.

Port and dogs continuously knowingly send knocked out players back on to play. That’s negligence. Tracs injury may be an afl issue? Should there be the right machinery on every afl site to assess internal injury? I don’t think the club doctors went, hey Tracs facing death get him back out there. Trac and his family could push for better injury assessment technology on site but haven’t. Save lives etc. That makes sense to me

And yes, it's absolutely negligence. Clubs should be sanctioned for this IMO.

It's probably not viable to have CT or MRI on-site at the MCG, it requires significant infrastructure adjustments due to radiation and magnetic field generation - the machines themselves cost a few million but the works required to make them safe would be just as significant. There's very little point when most major AFL grounds are within a stone's throw of very capable tertiary hospitals. Additionally these machines are designed to provide diagnostic services to society and are usually booked flat-out in emergency departments with some outpatient work also (for medicare funding/income) so I think the idea of having a machine + staffing specifically for 46 blokes, 2-3 hours a couple of times on a weekend would be horrendously out of touch with the current healthcare situation.

Ultimately the decision to send a player to hospital for assessment needs to be looked at - perhaps the AFL should have independent medical staff doing assessments with club staff?

Remember when they sent a clearly injured Joel Smith back on the ground in a pre season match . It isn’t just a one off with Trac , the club has form .

Think it’s been established he had no issue going back on and it is more around the lack of communication during recovery. He physically chose to go back on himself and AFL has signed off on the protocols the Dees took.

Dees then paid for all his care and gave him 10-12 weeks away from the club to recover, not sure what more they could have done. People are just fishing for issues a bit here.

If you have issues with protocols take it up with the AFL as it would apply to all clubs.

Our club ****s up a lot and does a lot of idiotic shit but you can’t blame the club on his injury.
