Isaac Heeney

Isaac Heeney is a crowd favourite and one of the best young players in the competition. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2018 AFL Mark of the Year award, was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in two of his eligible four years and played his 100th senior game in 2019. Heeney can be used in the midfield, forward line – where he booted four goals in star teammate Lance Franklin’s absence in Round 20 last year – or as a loose man in defence.

Isaac Heeney
DOB: 05 May 1996
DEBUT: 2015
DRAFT: #18, 2014 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Cardiff (NSW)

I believe the club when they say Heeney got injured early in the game, and I don't think it can be underestimated how significant it was.

Once he went down, we had no one capable of competing with Neale and Ashcroft in the middle.
Oh I never doubted Heeney was injured. For me the clear sign was the lack of work rate and effort from him on the day. He'd obviously shown a ridiculous amount of brilliance throughout the season, but what always stood out to me the most was that he matched it with effort. Was always willing to do the hard, unglamorous stuff to help the team, even when his individual game wasn't quite happening for him.

But there was none of that in the GF. A complete lack of chasing and repeat efforts, tackling or pressuring, working up and down to cover the ground. So I just assumed that unless he randomly decided to have his first lazy game for the year in the last game of the year, then he had to be under serious duress.

I agree. It didn't make any sense at all that he had such a massive drop off in form. He was outstanding in the first two finals.

We were completely stuffed once he went down.

Agreed, although I don't think a fit and firing Heeney would've made much difference unfortunately. We were that bad.

Probably. I think he was the domino that started the rot though.

The reality is Brisbane have multiple players who play with clean hands and composure in the middle of the ground, and we had one ... and he got injured.
