5 Things you want in 2013

I think how awful our forward line set up was shown last night when Adelaide were able to find Walker on the lead in the last minute, despite the Hawks flooding back. We would have just bombed it in long.
The Crows, also under a first year coach, gave us a lesson in what effective forward entry and set up is all about.

A game plan that emphasises quick ball movement through the corridor.

I cracked a few chubs at Adelaide's movement through the center today, giving their big men in Tippet and Walker every chance to be one out. What's the use of having Cloke if we're continually kicking to him 3 on 1? There are signs we've tried to adopt something like this, however when the going gets tough, they continually revert back to this chip along the boundary rubbish.

Taking the game on through the center, better kick in's, better field kicking skills and the addition of a decent ruckman combined with the return of Luke Ball should be enough to get us a pass in to the top 4 in 2013.
The way hawthorn moved the ball in the third was devestating to watch. There players move into space and lead off the ball. I don't think we need to go totally up the centre, but have a more balanced approach.
WE have the players to use the ball like hawthorn, but we connot hit targets atm because players aren't leading. The gameplan is too rigid, we need better spread.

1. Has to be Cloke staying at Collingwood.
2. Bringing in Cam Pederson or Stefan Martin as a back up ruckman, allowing Dawes to play only as a forward.
3. PLAY A TAGGER!!! Nothing more frustrating than seeing Blair/Wellingham even Sidebottom not doing much and allowing a player like Kennedy from Sydney to dominate freely.
4. Improve ball usage from half back and kick ins. This needs to total re-vamp it's been a nightmare all season and I hold my breath every time.
5. Keefe staying injury free.

A flag would always be nice, but improvement is what I want to see.

Wellingham is not a reliable kicker of the footy. I wouldn't see him as the answer to D50 rebounder.

Shaw us quick and so is Toovey. Harry played on Betts and Tooves destroyed Jetta in the H&a game. That long run where he bounced it 3 times in a 75m sprint, Jetta was chased by Nate. Not sure where Tooves was. Tooves handballed the other goal to him.

Shaw was played on a wing a lot this year. He's a potential AA HB. Leave him there.

We need an elite kick for defense. I like FABs call on Swanny going forward. He seems to have lost some hunger. He's won a BL and a flag so I can understand that. Not happy about it though.

With Beams improvement and Ballys return, perhaps Swanny off a HFF rotating in the middle may be a good idea to trial.

From all reports, it appears the interchange will move to a 2 and 2. Having good disposal and retaining possession will be even more important. It's amazing how much quicker you look when you have the ball, even more so when you play on and move the ball quickly, not necessarily via foot speed.
We all knew Malthouse prided himself on building a solid defence. I think he would have changed it a bit in 2012. Toovey has lost pace like it or not. If Nathan Buckley goes in with those same running backs next year i cant see us improving because i think Mick would have replaced the role of Leon this year with a Wellingham type.

At the end of it, flags are now won by luck. You need luck with injuries. You needa luck in finals. Just look at Hawks, if dangerfield didn't stand in a ridiculous position at the centre square break to allow Burgoyne a whole half field or stumble in the forward line Hawks are out of it. We ahd a drawn GF in 2010. Geelong got lucky to come up against us in 2011 playing injured players, and again got lucky with a goal decision and a flukey kick off the ground in 2009. It just goes on and on. The number 1 factor in footy now is luck.

Wellinghams disposal is no where near Davis'. Maybe Dids is the only one our list with the skills of Davis. I wouldn't like to see him playing back. Cabinet is pretty bare. Making changes was not one of Malthouses strong points over his 12 years. Let's give Bucks a chance.

Most on hear couldn't care less what Malthouse would have done. I'm not going to derail a thread on anything Malthouse related. He's not here and has showed 'his boys' exactly where he sits. Malthouse is not coming back so better to look forward and embrace what the club can do in 2013. The 2010 gameplan was found out late 2011 and will only get further behind if as expected the interchange reduces gain.

Other sides that pressed very well in 2011 in West Coast and carlton both regressed this year trying to still use a form of that method.

I want to see Matty Lappin leave as well, the amount of time we keep the ball in our forward line has dropped a lot since the past 2 years. That also puts pressure to our back line. I think Ben Hart has been treated pretty rough, what do people want him to do when the ball comes that fast in to our forward line.

I am 50-50 on Robert Harvey because we saw some improvement in the midfield, saw Beams become a great player but then the effectiveness of our midfield and tackles has gone down. I don't know who we could replace him with.

As for Anthony Rocca, seriously how is that man defensive assistant coach. What would he know about how to play as a back man, he hardly left the forward 50 in his career.

Like so many on this board you're having a fair crack at the assistant coaches, but where do the Bucks stop.

1. No injuries
2. Clever drafting i.e, a quick player with exquisite skills and goalkicking ability, and a forward/ruck.
3. J Thomas, Paine, Witts to break in.
4. Further improvement to youngsters Keefe, Williams etc
5. Carlscum to flounder in the bottom half under the big ego.

These are 5 things I want in 2013.

1. More defensive pressure in our forward line to keep the ball there as long as possible.
(to many times I saw the ball fly out of there and we miss an opportunity to score.)

2. Cloke to sign up ( important to our club.)

3. Play Dawes in the goal square and let Cloke lead out to take the mark.

4. Have both Kraks and Fasolo crumb the drop marks to snap for goal.

5. Forget kicking high and long to the forward line as the other clubs knew that and made sure Cloke had 3 guys surrounding him. Only pass to loose players around the boundary if need be.

I see other guys on here would like to get rid of Wellingham. I for one would like to keep him as he can play the tagging role on a midfielder. I have seen him take on players like Judd the Dudd, and make them have no effect on the game.

On a final note, I'm not disappointed how we finished the season. Obviously I wanted to win the GF this year, but what has happened this year with injuries and the loss to JMac it took a lot out of us.

The injuries to Ball, Keeffe, Macaffer, Kraks*, didn't help either.

Lets hope we go couple of steps further for 2013.

GO PIESSSSSS 2013

I think they gave the competition an early indication of how the Hawthorn game plan will be dismantled next season.

I only want 2 things.

1. An injury free season (or as close to it as possible)

2. To see the players bust their gut and actually go in harder and run more out there.

Barely saw that all season, and it was mighty frustrating to see on a weekly basis outside a handful of games. We go to Arizona every season to apparently make them fitter, and yet we didn't exactly see the fruits of that labour this season.

If we can get those 2 things going, the rest will fall into place, most likely even with the current list as is.

I have to disagree... Thomas and wellingham are our only players with zip, speed, x factor etc... and they are soo inconsistent...

we need some zing out of the stoppages... we can't rely on being workmanlike to get past sydney/adelaide/hawthorn/carlton next season...

Quick ball movement can counteract footspeed.

Which was something we did better in 2010. Also, the press, executed properly, pretty much negated any speed advantage given we were winning clearances back then too.

I'm holding out hope that this year was just a MASSIVE transition year, in which issues are being ironed out. New coach, new coaching panel, heaps of injuries, poor years from key players etc. A lot of negatives combined this year, so when you take a step back, a Prelim seems like a not bad result to be honest.

Can only bode well for next year. I think if we drop further next year, or look similar, then questions will be asked, either of Bucks, or the list itself. I still personally think this particular list isn't really built for where football is heading. Which means pain for us while Bucks gets it to where it needs to be. My hope, is that Bucks can jump one step ahead. Rather than play catch up, and the game moves on by the time we get there. Be one step ahead.

It's clear the game is heading to a more open, free flowing, faster future. Let's be one step ahead of that. Somehow...

1. Chris Dawes having a massive pre-season (regardless of whether Cloke stays or not)
2. A backup ruck option/3rd tall forward (ie Martin or Pederson)
3. Luke Ball back to his best
4. Sidebottom and Blair back to a forward position with only rotations through the middle with Wellingham back into the midfield
5. A tagger or more accountable midfield setup.

1) Improve our kicking in. Has been horrible all season

2) better run with injuries

3) Aaron Edwards. Yep this is a bit from left field but i think he would be fantastic in our fwd line with our midfield delivering it to him. Great set shot and great hands. Would release Cloke as well.

4) a 2nd ruckman. Jolly has been immense but its clear as day Wood is not gonna make it. Either go after another ruckman or give time to Ceglar/Witts.

5) Collingwood fans being united once again. Past 12 months i have noticed that we go after eachother with venom on any topic and for me thats not what we have ever been about and dont want us to become.

1. A season without distractions

2011, MM and H.Shaw/Maxwell gambling
2012, MM, Cloke, Swan drinking and then JMac

Can we get back to just playing footy??

2. Continuity with our player.....we only had 1 bloke play every game (Cloke) Sydney had 8, Adelaide had 5, WC had 7, Hawks had 3 (all defenders) and had 12 who only missed 1 or 2........if you have continuity in the players you can cover for injuries much better. We had heaps of injuries and absolutely no continuity at all.

In 2010, we had 6 blokes play all 26 games....including our 3 midfield stars, surely it is time our injury issues turn in our favour again???

3. Keeffe to have a Roughy-esque recovery and become our KPF/Ruck that we have missed.

4. H.Shaw to be left at HB, move Harry up to the wing....Heater is a better one on one defender, and isn't susceptible to the highball....and perhaps introduce a M.Williams as the BP shutdown player.

5. Beat Hawthorn and Carlton.

6. Pendles to be named captain and follow it up by being the Premiership captain, Brownlow medalist and Norm Smith medalist....and then for him and Bucks to hold aloft the 2013 cup!!

As for Anthony Rocca, seriously how is that man defensive assistant coach. What would he know about how to play as a back man, he hardly left the forward 50 in his career.

Rocca had his best ever B&F result (2nd behind Buckley), so arguably his best ever year in 1999 playing as a CHB. Also playing on some of the best defenders in the last 15 years means he can give some sound advice.

Well it's more like 10 but...
  • Keep Cloke and have Jolly/Dawes/Didak in good form for the season
  • Pickup a Leon Davis and Leigh Brown replacement
  • Development/improvement of the bottom 6, Witts/Ceglar/Gault/JT given games and Sidebottom/Wellingham (if we keep him) to go up another level
  • Pendles captain
  • Improved foot skills and new game plan
Edit: Oh and...
  • Luke Ball, Keeffe and Macaffer
  • No/less injuries and no distractions
Not too much to ask is it? :)

Edit2: And Rendell and Hine recruiting the best list in the land

1. Matty Rendell at Collingwood
2. Cam Ling assistant at Pies
3 Monkey as ruck coach.
4. Defensive pressure
5. Someone to take kick ins
6.Plan B for when our game plan doesnt work or change the game plan slighlty to atleast keep opposition guessing.
7.Cam Wood to be delisted
8.Some Big body players (no more bean poles)
9.Kick Carltons ass both times and in the granny by a point.
10.Another Ruck to help Jolly
11.Cam Pederson
12.Stef Martin
13.Josh Caddy

you said 5 .......sorry got carried away :(
