As Brady said, we'll be speaking to both clubs. The Crows and Port. If neither deal is good enough he'll stay.

And then the Crows and Port can put their offers forward at the end of next year. If he rejects the Crows then, he can go to the PSD.

I'm not trying to stir the pot too much but I would like to ask if any of you have ever left a job after working there for a year or less?

I'm probably about to go through that situation now for the first time in my adult life and would like to share my perspective. Obviously the news has only just broke and feelings are raw, I can imagine that it's been a testing time recently to be a North Melbourne supporter and you would have had high hopes Jason was going to be part of a group of players that would turn your fortunes around. It's extremely disappointing in that sense I totally understand it, if Butters requested a trade this year I'd almost be done with football I think and we've enjoyed far more success on-field recent years than your club so I imagine some of you will nearly be at breaking point.

I consider myself a pretty loyal person, I've never left a job on bad terms and have always committed at least 2 years, my first job I worked at for 6 years. I started my current job in May and it has been an extremely testing workplace for a number of reasons. I'm a chef working in Switzerland and have worked the summer season here this year with the most amateur organisation and co-workers I have ever encountered. I work with just 2 other cooks in a busy restaurant and there has been so many times I've wanted to just walk out the door and never come back, I can't even begin to describe it. One of the other guys is literally the most disgusting human being and 'chef' I've ever worked with. He drinks every shift, just a few weeks ago he had 14 beers on a sunday evening whule we were working, at one point he had 4 different beers set up around the kitchen, one in the fridge, one on the pizza section, one by the desserts and one in my area. Needless to say he was absolutely useless and I did almost all of the work. I cleaned the whole kitchen and went home, came back the next morning to find he'd been smoking in the kitchen after I'd left and just ashed his cigarettes straight on to my workbench and not even bothered to clean it up. I reported it to the boss the next day and all I got was 'yeah I know he's challenging sometimes, but it's hard to find staff at the moment so I can't really do anything about it' Another time he took a three hour break during lunch service, came back to get himself some chips and went back outside to continue his break, which led the 'head chef' to just walk out and go home, again leaving me there to do kitchen a la carte, pizzas, and desserts on a busy Sunday. I confronted him about it the next day saying how uncool it was, and how I actually couldn't believe that something like that was okay to him. And like I said earlier, those two incidents don't even scratch the surface of the whole thing, but out of my blind and probably stupid loyalty I've stuck it out this long for some reason, when I could literally walk into any restaurant tomorrow and probably have a job by the time I walked out.

Sorry to bore you with my personal situation, but needless to say this is one of the worst places I've ever worked, and coming from working at some really well respected restaurants both here and back in Australia, I can see this place is not worth staying at anymore. I don't feel like I'm betraying them at all by leaving after 8 months, but for me its become untenable for me to stay.

I don't mean any disrespect to North Melbourne at all here, these are just the indisputable facts - you have won the wooden spoon two years in a row now, your coaching situation is in limbo, you have one of the lowest attendance records in the league, and have gone through 3? coaches in just the last 2 years or so. I can imagine as a player that was considered to be the best player in his draft year, for some it would be a difficult pill to swallow to go to the worst performing club and arguably in turmoil off-field too while your peers enjoy more success. For him, he may feel that he can't get the best out of himself at your club and his career will be better served developing at a club that has a more stable regime, with the added bonus of having family and friends just down the road, so to speak. Especially with the added pressures of the media that have gone pretty hard at him all year. If he doesn't feel like he's been supported by his employer, then can we really blame him for wanting to go and work somewhere else?
If he's hurting inside and mentally he's not coping, what do North really have to gain by keeping him there against his will?

I do hope that both clubs come to an amicable agreement and I'm sure it's not our intention to bend you over at the trade table and offer you peanuts. He's obviously highly rated and I fully expect the trade to reflect that. It wasn't that long ago Port was in nearly the same situation that you find yourselves in now, things can turn around quickly and no one knows what the future holds. I just don't think it's entirely fair to just instantly put the whole blame on him and call him a soft**** etc... although it's entirely within your rights, just don't think it really reflects the bigger picture here.
Mate, this thread is moving at about 4 pages every 10 minutes, we've got a Clarko thread that's bipolar, and our Trade & List Management Thread where the best mathematicians are proposing all sorts of ridiculous pick swaps and now we have another list spot to fill.

Trust me, no one has got the time to read an essay on why your Swiss cheese didn't melt properly on your pizza!

I'm certainly not suggesting everything is going all that smoothly at NM right now, but I'm thinking there's a fair chance that the main reasons JHF wants out are more likely to be a problem at Alberton in the coming years rather than Arden St.
Spot on.
What we lack is marketable players, that's what JHF is. If a team is giving up a marketable player (who attract prime time slots etc) then any trade needs to value that.
I dunno mate, this is such a weird take.
For most traditional criteria, he’s remarkably unmarketable. I blush on his behalf whenever he opens his mouth in public and attempts to produce a coherent sentence. He has the worst facial hair in the AFL, and that’s quite a contested podium. He has no sense of leadership, no sense of good judgement, and no poise under pressure. He has a good highlights reel for someone his age and that’s about it.

This has probably been said plenty of times already - this thread moves at lightning pace and I can't keep up - but how is an opposition club able to talk to a contracted player; one in his first ever contract in the first year after he is drafted; and offer him a 4 year contract at $800000 pa, to break the second year of his current contract and without his current club made aware that they are in discussions until they announce he wants to leave?

At the very least it is highly unethical and it may be that in the longer run, some opposition clubs will just be a little more cautious when dealing with Port Adelaide. At least I hope so.

Now a left field thought, not necessarily one that I believe we should do; but assuming the rules allow it, should we offer him 5 years at say $750k a year, or just match Ports offer?

I'm not in favour of it, for all of the signs/behaviours we have seen since he was drafted, but I also hate what he, his manager and Port have conspired to do.

How would the players at the club feel about the club taking nothing and setting themselves back 2-3 years?

Don't think the players would see it this way, especially with how JHF has carried himself this year. They'd see an entitled no. 1 pick who's had everyone bend over backwards for him in his young career, while the majority of AFL players have had to work their arse off for an opportunity.

Set the club back 2-3 years? I don't agree with this.. I know he's pick 1 and you expect more than you would from even a pick 5 or 6, but there's high draft picks that don't work out all the time. Just means more opportunity and the chance at a higher salary for the players that remain.

l'm thinking if Jason wants to go to Port then the starting point is Port have to get pick#2 from West coast and use it as well as their pick #8 or future 1st plus a player being either Duursma or Bergman as l cant see them offering Butters. For me this is the take it or leave it deal.

The whole narrative has been that it’s all been North’s issue.

I think the player needs to take some responsibility here.

I think we got played here and this has been in the works for quite a while.

He never settled because he didn’t want to settle.
At face value this looks spot on.

Yep, and unfortunately our current situation has given him an easier out.

Sure, but have you heard Dustin Martin speak to the media, and he is uber-marketable.

What time is the ceremonial burning of all the #6 puma jumpers sold in 2022 happening?

He sooked all year and most here, including me, defended him.

Fcuk him!

Time to pony up SA clubs.

Totally agree. Moving forward I can precisely measure my level of blind loyalty for NMFC footballers. He’ll mature, I loyally said

Was he a campaigner all along? To paraphrase the great Valvolne spruiker J. Laws Esq;

Farmers and Fleet managers knew it. Car Mechanics and Patch Adam’s knew it. And deep down I knew it too.

Here’s to a beneficial trade.

the clarko allegations were the final nail

if that didnt come out prior to trade period he stays and potentially settles in to melbs more

The thing that *s me off is the timing.

After the dogs at the afl gave us s**t priority picks.

This.

It's the timing that really gets on my t*ts. Clearly Poort and JHF/his management have been in discussions for a while about this. As a result, we are under absolutely no obligation to approach negotiations in good faith.

I accused Scallop Industry Thug of being over-the-top and relentless in his criticism of Jason.

Turns out he was being under-the-top and relentful. My apologies.

I wasn’t trying to be a dick. It want even the cracking the sads at team mates. It was the lack of effort when the ball wasn’t in his area. The throwing hands in the air when shit went wrong. It was a bloke who had no idea of the team concept. I don’t care if he ever gets it. I just hope port/crows think he will.

Jy hasn’t got a great tank but will run till he chucks. Same with Phillips

We can turn it into a win-win without wishing someone well who has s**t on our club and left us at our lowest point.
It becomes a win win regardless of if we wish him the best or not. Doubt very much we would be feeling the same if it was another club most on here would be laughing about it. With what is going on with all this Clarko stuff should we not we be showing a little more sensitivity in this situation.
