Outside of the North bubble we live in that's how we're seen. What have we done of relevance since sacking Brent Harvey after failing to make finals fron 9-0? That's almost six years ago now too. It's up to the club (and us supporters) to change that.
We're relevent this year. JHF is already on the intro montage for at least on footy wank show.

We started to show a bit last season and people started taking notice. After the loss on the weekend everyone was talking us up. Even tho we ****en lost!!

How relevent were Melbourne four years ago?

Yeah, but he's clearly got another level or two that proper AFL training will get him at.

Kind of fitness that allows him to maintain that breakaway speed halfway through the final quarter and kick those three winning goals.
Check his birth certificate because at 18/19 it’s unlikely hes fully developed either. in a couple of years he might end up looking like the size of cunners.
absolute wrecking ball

What I’m surprised about is for a lump of a lad, his second and third efforts are intense. It’s crazy the number of repeat sprints he does without blowing up.
His fitness must be off the charts already.
His burst from stoppage is his most underrated weapon. People just assume because of his size and the way he plays that he is a grunt midfielder. But don’t be fooled, when he goes he has serious wheels.

We haven’t seen it a lot yet, but just wait. He will be taking the ball and bursting away from packs more and more as he gets used to the level.

His speed in games last year was noticeable. Its not just the burst he can keep it up for at least 50m.

Just think at the end of the year, he could be playing as an outside mid with Cunners feeding him the ball, along side LDU and TT.
We’re going to be wildly inconsistent but I expect at least one week where the rest of the comp will sit of and take notice.

Sort of contradicting yourself here, Ferbs. Melbourne weren't relevant at all four years ago and they made themselves relevant through their acts on and off the field. That is what we need to do. It's hardly great to be relevant for being the team that is so shit that it's a miracle when they're competitive against other rebuilding footy clubs.

Four games into his AFL career and JHF is:

3rd at NM for contested possession - 41 @ 10.25pg. Simpkin & Greenwood leading with 48 @12.0pg.
Equal 2nd at NM for clearances with 18. Greenwood leading with 21.
Equal 4th at NM for tackles with 14. Greenwood leading the AFL with 30.
8th at NM for Inside 50's with 11. Zurhaar leading with 19.

Very impressive stats for a four game veteran.

Sorry to taint this thread with this list. But you know what I mean when I say "Really all those blokes went Number 1? Most of them should be embarrassed when they look at JHF."

As of the 2021 AFL season, in which North Melbourne finished last, Port Adelaide is the only club never to have had the first overall selection of an AFL Draft.
A few fun facts about this list.

Of recent number one picks, Ugle-Hagan is already extended to 2024, Rowell to 2023, Walsh 2026, Rayner 2023 and Weitering 2025. Only McGrath is out of contract this year but obviously has already extended once. Tom Boyd and and Tom Scully are the only two this century that moved at the end of their initial contract.

As for how long it takes to have success, some of these guys waited a very long time to get even close.

Of number one picks this century, only Goddard, Kreuzer, McGrath and Rayner have played a final in their first 50 games.

Nick Riewoldt's first final was game 73, Luke Hodge game 111, Cooney 64, Deledio 195, Murphy 80, Whitfield 71, among others. David Swallow has never played a final and is up to 179 games.

TLDR: It is very common for number one picks to have little immediate success and yet stay with their original club.

Make of that what you will.

Best bit is that as soon as he drops it, he's back on his feet ready for the next play.

41 of his 77 possessions so far are contested. The only players with more possessions than him this year, and going at more than 50% contested are Lachie Neale, Touk Miller, Matt Rowell, Patrick Dangerfield, Hugh Greenwood, Jack Viney and Max Gawn. At the club he's 5th on disposals, 4th on tackles, 1st on Frees For, 3rd on contested possessions, 2nd on running bounces, and 1st on goal assists.

And he's only 4 games into his career and not even 19 yet.

He's everything we hoped for and more. We haven't had an under-20 make such an impact since John Longmire won a Coleman at 19. I hope he gets a chance to share and experience a midfield with Ben Cunnington soon.

Yep, and we got lucky with him. A fully fledged AFL player from the get go, a goal kicking high marking gamebreaking type with a ceiling that's Sistine Chapel stuff, and who appears to be heading towards it rapidly.

People don't come to the footy/switch over to see Marc Murphy or Andy McGrath types.

They do for JHF types though.

Bit harsh on MM to lump him in with a tagger.

Every single #1 draft pick (except if Academy or FS) is by definition starting their career with the previous season’s worst team
I believe I read somewhere that when * got their #1 draft pick as a reward for being the biggest pack of drug cheats in the history of Australian sport they were still the best team in the universe. Are you suggesting that the * fans are full of crap?

Went to the * game against Adelaide yesterday. After losing to three good teams they beat an ordinary one by a couple of points and whinge all day about the umpires. Total frauds.

Maybe I wasn't clear.

We are already more relevent than Melbourne were four years ago. Four weeks into the season JHF is on the intro video to a couple of gab fests and someone like Matt Lloyd is saying "When we are good" about the side in the next few years. Its a very different narrative to ... any time in the last decade ??? well since 2016 anyway.
