Hi, I'm a newbie here but are you guys actually talking about trading Shannon Grant?! Sure he goes missing occasionally but he kicks clutch goals from fifty and adds some class to an otherwise workmanlike midfield. (In my opinion of course, and I may be very wrong and please don't ridicule me because I just love the kangas and like to talk about footy and you all seem like such nice people.)

I think the greatest misconception is that Grant reguarly uses the ball well. To me that is the only thing stopping him being a real star of the competition. The amount of his disposals that missed the mark or he chose the wrong option was exceptional for such a skilled player. He gets caught at least 3 or 4 times during a game and his resultant handball always goes in an adhoc direction.

He should be hitting about 80% of his disposals (at least) hitting targets where I would believe he would be somewhere around 60%. Certainly not bad, but not worth the kudos he gets.

Ranked 38 in Mike Sheahans top 50.
Probably a bit high, but he had some very good games.

If every player in our team played at their absolute peak, Grant is the best.
Never forget 2001, the best season performance by a Roos player since Carey.

If everyone was at their best, the 3 Daniels take the cake. Not to mention Corey!
Please! By best, do you mean the best form they've shown so far at AFL level, or the best that you imagine them to capable of producing in the future? Neither Motlop or Wells have the runs on the board yet...and Harro has only produced a couple of top level performances.

Agree with Corey, though... can't think of anyone in our team who has produced anything like his 96 form.

The haircut is an absolute shocker though.

Hehe. I like it actually. Its better than those pretty boys of the AFL who seem to blow wave it, tease it and put hair product in it before going out and playing a game of footy.

where exactly did he find his extra yard of pace that he didn't have for his entire career?

I think you will find that because he is not spending as much time running on ball that he is a little zippier up the forward line. He is definately a much better player when his confidence is up like it is at the moment

I agree. The More Wells and Harris can play on the ball the more we will get out of Grant

I have been saying for years that Grant should be played predominately on the HF line and it looks as though it is finally happening, and guess what, the disposal has jumped up a notch.

Not suprising to me really. :D

Mate, I have been on that since '98. You can't claim it.

Him and Harvey form the best FP/HFF combo in the history of the frickin world. They have always been forwards. Just need Grima to move into a semi-permanent role in the guts, and Wells, Harro, Rawlings, Grima, Motlop, M Stevens rotation will allow these two to kick 90 goals between them.

I agree Moti, and it seems Laidley does as well.

Did any of you guys catch the interview after the game on Ch. Eddie?

Dermet was commeting on the fatc Laidley had heaped praise on Grant for his game, and Laidley commemnted that in a perfect world he would only play Grant on the HFF and that is his best spot and he's a fabulous HFF.
Went on to say he hasn't been able to leave Grant there as he has needed to use him in the mid field rotations.

I just didn't like the idea of having Shagga as a run with player / tagger. Glad JYD has the right idea and I can live with his rotation policy of Shagga getting a piece of the onball action. Perkins is another guy who I prefer to see him tested as a tagger before finding out where to position him.

S. Harvey, Grant, Motlop, Thompson, Rocca, Petrie - no opposition coach is going to have a good night's sleep when trying to figure out the match ups.

Was it 1999 or 2000 that Shagga kicked something like 46.9 from a HFF, most from on or just inside the 50? Been pretty sold on that as his position since that.

I thought it was '98 when he did that.

From '99 onwards, he spent time in the midfield, and I think that Pagan may have also used him as a half-back flanker/tagger at some stage.

Shannon Grant
- Where should he play?

Half Forward Flank
Kicks goals, doesn't have to worry about his opponent due to his accountability, gives our younger midfielders in Harris, Wells, Rawlings, Firrito, Stevens and Co. more of a chance.

Midfield
Is simply required there. Is a great kick, provides an outside running option and we need his precise kicking into the F50.

Both but I think we should be mindful of the absence of Motlop. Not sure that Joens should be considered a straight replacement, and considering 'new' faces in our midfield have to consolidate it would be good to always have one of Boomer or Grant down forward for most of any game.
