AFL Player # 8: Ben "Goblin" Hobbs

Plays a real country footy brand that needs to be refined a little bit, but at the same time you don’t want to lose that manic, desperation that makes him so good. Fine line.

Bit like Shaun McKernan actually, would be a dominant, unstoppable force in the 90’s but the game has evolved.

Are we sure his nickname is Goblin and not Gobbling?

Either way he will now be known as the Gobbling Goblin, Let it be known!
Wow thought I was watching Cool Hand Luke there for a second.

He does so much well but the last couple of weeks has really let himself down with the poor stuff.

He has all the makings of a very good player, if not elite but one we can rely on week in, week out.

17 flangers credited to him in two starts is bog average as if he’s hitting that cross roads moment where he feels like he belongs and is biting off more than he can chew and not really understanding what he can and can’t do.

Tracking very well for a second year inside mid and one we should all be bloody excited about

Definitely playing a lot better and disposing of the footy better than McGrath and Parish.

His kicking action definitely plays a part in his effective play.

Hobbs I'm comfortable with when he kicks or handballs.

He is actually not better than Parish. Has been very poor by foot the last few weeks.

He is a young gun and a future star but for the moment he needs to work out his range.

What are you talking about

Hobbs kicking the last fortnight has been disgraceful

Last fortnight doesn’t override his career output so far.

A fortnight does not a career opinion make.

Has to do two things. Learn the limitations of his kicking. He is a decent kick if he sticks to finding his 30 to 40 meter targets . What he can not do is pinpoint laser kicks into traffic . Also has to refine his tacking a fraction and stop tackling blokes around the head.

Agree ant555, I would add if he grabs the ball on his knees then to get to his feet if he can’t release the ball in a tackle. Umps are far less likely to pay holding the ball when players stand themselves up.
