Aren't you saying that Parker's behaviour needs to end? That we need to protect fragile people from a position that commands public scrutiny?

There is no version of that protection that works, generally. Experiences suggest that all you end up doing is reducing tolerance with the outcome being roughly the same (that people become just as upset with things that, objectively, are not as serious).

It's how you end up with generations of players that coaches need to apologise to.
There's a big difference between mocking and criticism/scrutiny. Players should take criticism, but they don't need to tolerate mocking. Are you saying that we shouldn't call out or eradicate mocking for fear of reducing tolerance levels? Cmon.

Redman called Shiel out for refusing to go to Papley. His refusal to defend resulted in a goal. I don't mind that because Redman as his teammate should be providing feedback to Shiel. Shiel has to own up to it.
What Parker did however is just stupid, childish and sets the wrong example from a supposed veteran. No need to kick someone while they're down, especially when they aren't looking.

The scene is from March 2019. It was around the time of Dylan Shiel’s 26th birthday, his first since joining Essendon in one of the central moves of an incredibly eventful trade period.

It was also Ben Rutten’s first pre-season at the Bombers, the former Adelaide defender having arrived at the Dons from Richmond to bolster John Worsfold’s coaching panel.

In a meeting before training, Rutten made special mention of Shiel’s birthday. Then during the session, the digital scoreboard at The Hangar showed a message to mark the birthday.

All nice, friendly, innocuous, if unusual. According to club insiders, few if any other birthdays of players or staff were acknowledged in such fashion.

Fast forward about 18 months, to the Bombers’ stint in a Queensland hub as part of the Covid-19 affected 2020 season. By this point, Rutten was the coach in waiting, anointed in the succession plan with Worsfold. Shiel had been elevated to the Dons’ leadership group. Essendon had started that season well, advancing to 5-2 before capitulating to win just one more match under Worsfold.

Shiel is not soft. He is not a physical beast but when he has played at his best he has always gone when it is his turn. The issue now is that he does not give a ****. No care factor. Nothing to do with being soft.

Good point. I think Parker should get a week for being a big old meanie.

As long as you leave race, religion, sexuality out of the equation, it's fair game. Gamesmanship at it's finest, nothing more. Nothing sinister.

I just wish our players were in any position to return serve. EFC banter would be like being hit in the face with a bit of wet lettuce.

Even religions fair play

I can see us baiting other teams with:
"I bet you don't even know what a macchiato is... let alone a doppio! YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW YOUR COFFEES MATE!!!!"

He is not soft. You obviously have a different definition. I am not digging anything. The simple fact is when he has played his best footy he has not been soft. Was not soft in 2019. Was not soft to start 2020. What has happened is the care factor went out the window after McDonald bashed him all night in the 2020 game against North and not 1 of our players put any physical pressure back the other way. It is simply impossible to be rated elite in clearances and be soft. To get to elite you have to take the pressure that is going to come. For every clearance you win you will get hammered in a tackle 3 or 4 other times.
He just does not care so he does not go hard. He has given up on the team. There is a difference. I am not defending it. I hate it and I do not want to see him in the side. He is on $800k. He should turn up every week and play his role. He can **** off as far as I am concerned but when his mind is in the game he is not soft. Was he soft last week when he kept coming back on after he rolled his ankle ?
Fact. There is a difference between soft and simply not giving a ****.

Poetic response from shiel this week would be an opening bounce tackle on cotchin.

Only way he and half the side can respond this week
Cotchin playing in the VFL ?

Couple of days on, im still not in the drop him camp.

We're gonna lose. Noone else to come in. Give him the first few centre bounces to respond.
I am over him as in my book even if there is a reason behind it you should have enough pride in your performance not to simply chuck it in and not make an effort. This is professional sport. I played in bad sides at times but I never went into a game not giving a toss. The odd time I played badly or mad mistakes or even gave up on the odd play happened but I always had enough pride in myself to feel real dirty on myself and do everything to rectify it. Maybe I am wired differently and do not understand it but you do not just give in like that. You try and do your bit . I just can not see how you reward can not give a stuff.

I don't like it but that is perfectly understandable. It's hard to buy in and make sacrifices for the team if no one else is doing it and they didn't have the respect for you to provide a bit of support when you're getting beaten up.

That first sentence sums up today's generation to a tee, if it gets too hard and others aren't doing it so I won't either...what a crap attitude that is.
I don't care what everyone else is doing it's not in my nature to give up, I'm going to fight right to the end... that's how you win the respect of your teammates and supporters alike.
If he's given up I don't want him anywhere near the team.
