A lot of posters that I respect seem very confident in this thread that LDU is staying.

I hope they are correct, and that their confidence is based on good info.

Truth be told your info turned out to be correct.

A few days after you said north would have liked to be more progressed with contract talks it came out from Luke’s manger that they aren’t even thinking about it at the moment.

North would prefer to be holding a presser today with LDU’s new contract freshly signed.

The other part of what you said was speculation which to be honest doesn’t make much sense. About Rawlings liking having first round picks. Aside from the ability to trade to f2’s for an f1, you can also bring forward picks two years in advance from next year.

The club is adamant he will stay.

I guess that’s the case until it isn’t.

Yeah, that post in question from me was one part "here's what I've heard" which was that the contract talks were stalled, and then one part "here's my speculation/opinion on how that might have been a factor with that trade of our F1".

Thanks mate.

And I wouldn’t call them stalled. Maybe from our point of view.

But the fact is based on what his manager said, LDU wants to see improvement. I get that. Imagine he signs early and we play every game like we did round 24 against the hawks.

Problem for us nuffies is that we don’t know what that means. Is it doubling our wins from 3 to 6? Is it staying in the majority of games? Who knows.

I’m certain we will improve this year and thus I’m certain he will stay because i genuinely believe he wants to for a whole host of reasons.

But the team needs to prove it’s better.

I know it’s pretty much embedded in the system now, but I really hate these 7 year+ contracts.

I’ll be honest and say I have no idea what the true figures are but I would be far more inclined to offer way overs e.g. 4 years @ 2m than a long term contract.

If things go remotely how we hope they do over the next few years, we are going to have big bunch of top-liners looking to get paid in 4 years time.

If he wanted out, why wouldn't he just request a trade in the most recent trade period?
Is he waiting for that supposed other team to have more trade assets? Otherwise, I don't really get waiting 12 months.
Why make those comments to CH7 and recent social media posts about the club and players brought in?
He appears invested and excited to me. He's either waiting to see how things look at the bye and then he signs or he holds off till the end of the year and meets with all the teams and makes a decision like others have done before.
No doubt there is an element of his manager wanting to get him the best number he can get out of us or another team, because that's his job and it is LDU's last contract most likely.

I don't have any insight from Luke's side of the proceedings (and baaarely had any from the club's side either 😂).

However my assumption would be that players and their agents much prefer to change clubs via free agency these days, as opposed to relying on trades. Gives them much more freedom and flexibility.

A trade will still likely be needed though as we can match whatever deal LDU gets offered.
So unless he's waiting for that other team (maybe Hawks given they had the Barass trade) to have the ability to trade more assets with us in 12 months time, then I don't get delaying it if he wants out.
I don't think he'd ever go there, but Saints had 7 & 8. I'm sure Hawks could've pivoted off Barass as well.

The trading of our F1 wasn't exactly at the "11th hour" as you have suggested though. We had it on the table for Houston and/or picks during trade week. The LDU contract situation may have created a bit of urgency to get moving (trading in the experienced players) to try and retain LDU from the club's point of view, but all the comments even as far back as the members Q&A suggested splitting 2 or moving the F1 were options to get another pick in the draft or a good player.
I don't think they would operate based on LDU leaving when they'd have a pretty good feeling he's committed.

I don’t mind the added pressure on the club to improve, whether the source of such things is real or not.

We all know it’s time things ramped up.

Not concerned at all about LDU and his future with us. Those very close to him have had nothing but positive comments on the subject in their communications with the people at North who matter.

Opinion pieces by journos and the like are white noise click bait afaic.

How come the Aints don't get mocked for all the big fish they never land? They are always into everyone and don't land anything but crap players
Because they are that irrelevant that no one cares.

If they were finishing in the bottom 3 like us they would also be getting mocked.

Truly no one really gives us a shit about the Saints at the moment. They are middle table mediocrity.

I'm not suggesting anything specifically to LDU here, but just pointing out there are plenty of examples of players who publicly say they want to stay at a club, want to be a one-club player etc etc... and then leave.

We saw it with Dan Houston at Port just this year.

So while you're correct that "Opinion pieces by journos and the like are white noise click bait afaic', in the interest of fairness we should probably acknowledge that the same is true of player statements.
