The explosiveness and power from the contest hasn’t been there this year. Wonder if he’s carrying an injury?
I said the same thing after the Brisbane game mate. He's getting his hands on it but his first few steps are nothing like what we're used to. Has to be a niggle of some sort he's playing with.

And who gives a s**t …
Syd Barker status at present equivalent to a VFL Port Melbourne B&F award ….

He's our best midfielder.

He is even still performing as our best midfielder. He is not the issue at all.

It's just ludicrous to throw pot shots at this guy IMO. Genuine gun, and he actually does tackle and get some good ones in. Kicking not the best no, he has hes deficiencies but would be better (like anyone) with better players around him.

Realistically the torch nees to be on the leadership group

Can’t defend

Doesn't really bother me if he can't defend - that's on the coaches to get the right mix around him to take advantage of his strengths. But when he misses those 25-30 metre kicks, which happens too often for a player of his calibre, it's very deflating.

There was one early in the second where he had Ford (I think) by himself 35 out, straight in front. He could have kicked it 50 metres in the air and still found him, but instead he scrubbed it so it reached Ford on the half volley. Ball goes up the other end in a flash for a goal.

Widely recognised by 17 other clubs as our best player and if offered up for trade 17 other clubs would be lining up . But he’s no good and we should trade him for a 2nd rounder …. smh
This whole thread is filled with dolts...

Does it mean that much when your entire midfield are kids, and then anyone above his age is just cooked?

They’re not bad numbers, but how’s his influence on the game? He was an influential player in juniors, we haven’t seen that once yet and that’s all mindset.

Probably means more tbh. It’s far easier when everyone else is top shelf.

I reckon his stat sheet has flattered him this year. I'm not sure what's going on, but he is having very little impact and is far too often being outplayed by players who are far less talented than he is. I know his tackles and pressure acts suggest that he is doing all the team things, but his defensive running and intensity just isn't passing the eye test.

A combination of Brandon Parfitt and Jack Bowes took him to the cleaners around the contest yesterday.

Two weeks earlier it was George Hewett and Adam Cerra.

At this stage of his career he should be dominating these blokes.

Maybe its just me, be he needs a WhiPhi/Cunnington guy to help him get space? Making him the main extractor just doesn't seem to work

it's a team sport, when 20 other players on your side is getting beaten, one isn't going to change much.

For all the doomsday stuff, get 60 games into the players we need, simple.

Get 100 games into the players we need, it's top 4 time. Simple

It really isn't that simple. We don't have the crop at the moment, and if we are just building through the draft then it's going to take far longer than people realise to get the quality through the door.

If we were to pump another 60-100 games into the players, we put out on the park today, we'll still be bottom 4 in 2 years time. No decent half backs that can actually defend (Sheez excluded because he is damaging the other way), no decent wingman, no pressure small forwards, no lockdown small defenders and a midfield that is pretty shallow. Of the players that played today I seriously think only 7-8 of them will still be around when we actually start rising up the ladder.

Errrr we will never have the crop, in other words we will never know when we have the crop. Did clarkson know he had the 'crop' at hawthorn back in 2004 when he first took over? Did richmond have the crop as late as r22, 2016? No, they gradually realised that.

We have everyone one of those type of players already in the team, they are just not very good at it. That's why we need to develop them. We will never just 'get' these players after turning up a swtich.

The reality is that we've got a few more years of bottom with gradual transitioning to bottom half to a finals bound team as team naturely develop.

We are very much on the right pathy if not ahead of the curve as long as we are not chop and changing like many frustrated supporters are implying in their texts then we should be fine.

For the worst case scenario, look no further than st kilda and essendon. They are in the shiite because they are constantly changing things with shorterm solutions. Just put this into perspective, what we are doing is 20 years in the waiting. In other words, we have delayed the bottoming out for a variety of reasons for 20 years since 2002 and we've only gotten onto it now.

He's good, to go to gun level disposal need to improve. That said he's certainly not Simpkin level bad.

Top 3 player on our list from a potential point of view (I'd argue best with only Sheezel possibly ahead), hitting prime age and we've got posters keen to trade him or see him go via FA. What's even crazier is that we've seen him chain together several games of elite level football over the last 2 years, and now after a sub-par start to the season, fans have turned on him and want to piss him off.

Wild stuff.

I'm not sure what's going on with his drop off in form but I want him sticking around for the next 10 years.

10 years? Thank Christ you’re not the list manager.

I think you are confusing worry about his current form and trajectory with a desire for him to leave. In me, at least. I don't want the guy to go - as you say, he's our best or second-best player when in form! But at the moment he is not in form, and I am worried it is because he wants to leave (which in a sad way, I would not blame him for).

Petracca 3.2 tackles per game - Average. Disposals, marks, kicks, handballs, clearances above average.
LDU 3.8 tackles per game - Average. Disposals elite. Kicks, handballs, clearances above average. Marks average.

Getting his hands on it but not really damaging. Not really getting those clean clearances as oppo would be sitting on him.
Needs that other guy who blokes for him and does the dirty work.
