He has a lot of leverage and he'd be crazy to not use it to get the contract that he wants. He only has this window as an elite footballer. This contract sets up the rest of his life.
But I feel like he's really made it clear that his priority is to stay. He's done everything short of signing on the line.

Looking back it was weird that he did that and then didn't sign soon after.
I really don't find it too weird. They basically showed their cards to try to stop North fans combusting in preseason.
They said that they won't sign until into next season. That maximises his value, to where he could get the biggest contract in AFL history is he starts strong.
I would have thought that after the Syd his price would be close to its max at the moment. Delaying contract talks doesn't always push up the price - see Ben Brown.

His camp have made it clear they are waiting to see how much we improve. I don’t like this from a senior player as he’s the one who should be driving the improvement rather than waiting for it.

I'd say he's very much doing his part in driving improvement considering the career best year leading to his first Syd Barker medal.
That should be the expectation for the $$$ being thrown around.

Yeah. His manager said it a few weeks ago. Larkey even repeated it in his interview yesterday. It's clearly the story his management are putting out. But I don't think he is any chance of leaving, they are just trying to push up the price.

If he signs now and there's some sort of team implosion in March, he's going to be sitting on a contract that consigns his entire career to losing. I wish it was already done, but I get why he wants to be as sure as possible.

I don't think that's the case, I think he's a pretty laid back sort of dude who is now getting the best out of himself, he has the hunger, remember at the start of 2020 lots of Demon supporters were wondering if Christian would ever fulfil his destiny, they got glimpses in 2018 & 2019 but like most supporters there was no patience, and in 2020 he exploded. Luke won't be going backwards I can assure you, baring injury he's only getting warmed up, last year you saw glimpses of it even though he played well all year and won the "Sid", the very best is yet to come.

Yep agree and have to chuckle that player managers are now using our club to push up the price of players actually on our very own list..
We always were, and will always be the innovation club.
I suspect his manager was pissed at Luke when he came out and said he was staying - it could have cost them a new car. Now they are trying to get some leverage back with the Zurhaar yarn about needing to see improvement. Maybe it is slightly more convincing with Luke, at least he hasn't had his teammates names tattooed on his leg.

I also think hitting it as a lofty goal would be awesome to watch and bring him well into Brownlow contention. But if we are setting that as an expectation regardless of the contract amount we are just setting up disappointment.
