Media Release from Perth Glory

Perth Glory Name Their New Coach
Tue 25th Jan 2005

Perth Glory is delighted to announce that Steve McMahon will be the club's Head Coach for the 2005/06 Hyundai A-League season.

McMahon, 43 years of age, is a highly energetic and ambitious coach with an outstanding playing career.

Perth Glory Chairman Nick Tana said that this is a fantastic coup for Perth Glory and Australian football.

"Steve will bring a wealth of international coaching exposure to the club from an illustrious and long playing career. He has an extensive global network of football contacts of the highest pedigree.

"Steve's energy, enthusiasm and hunger to be successful in his coaching career played an important part in our decision making.

"Steve will be reporting to the club's Technical Manager, Mich D'Avray", says Nick Tana.

McMahon has chosen to continue his coaching career in the Hyundai A-League because of the new exciting news coming from Australian football.

"I see a move to Australia as a tremendous challenge for me. Australia is highly regarded around the world in so many different sports, and I have no doubt that this can also be achieved in football. The potential is limitless and I'm confident I can play a role in this" says McMahon.

McMahon was the Manager at Blackpool FC for over 4 seasons (2000 - 2004) and his achievements included winning the LDV Cup Winners Final in 2001/02 and
again in 2003/04.

Prior to this he was in charge at Swindon Town FC for 4 seasons (1994 - 1998) where he was selected Manager of the year in 1995/96, won the Division in 1995 and reached the semi-finals of the Coca-Cola Cup.

He has full English FA badges and a European UEFA 'A' Licence Badge. McMahon has had an illustrious playing career. He played over 600 games as central midfielder at the highest level and was selected in Liverpool's team of the nineties.

During his time at Liverpool (1985 - 91), he played European football, won three League Championships, a League and Cup Double, and two FA Cups. He also played at Everton (1979 - 83), Aston Villa (1983 - 85), and Manchester City (1991 - 94).

McMahon also played a total of 17 full England Caps which included the 1988 European Championship and 1990 World Cup.

Steve McMahon biography:

Steve McMahon was born in Liverpool and played professional for both Everton and Liverpool. While at Liverpool he got capped 17 times, the last time against Ireland in 1991. On Christmas Eve the same year he signed for City for £900,000 and went on to make 87 appearances and scored a single goal against Norwich. McMahon was brought as a replacement for the playing manager Peter Reid, and he did a god job for the blues in his short time at the club. He became popular with the fans for his hard working and gutsy displays, and even though he lacked pace and his knees were putting him out of action from time to time, he could still turn the games into City's favor and let younger players like Flitcroft and Lomas blossom at his side.

McMahon left City to become the player-manager of Swindon Town in 1994 for the cut-price of £100,000. He led Swindon the division 2 championship the following year, but during the next three years he failed to bring the club above the 17th position. McMahon resigned in September 1998, after Swindon had lost 5 of the 9 opening games of the 1998/99 season. He was eventually succeeded by Jimmy Quinn.

In January 2000 he landed the Blackpool managerial job taking over at Bloomfield Road after Nigel Worthington, but could not prevent them from being relegated to the Third Division. The following season he led Blackpool to the play-offs where they beat Leyton Orient in the final. After that the club finished 16th and 13th in Division Two but once again found themselves struggling in the lower half of the table. McMahon was frustrated by the lack of funds at Bloomfield Road a report of unrest amongst players, may have led to him offering his resignation in January 2004, four years after taking charge of the club. He later withdrew the resignation and led the team to survival only to be replaced by Colin Hendry (another City favorite) the following summer.

Former England internationals Steve McMahon and Peter Withe, John Hollins, who made his name as a player at Chelsea, and Ian Porterfield, scorer of Sunderland's winning goal in the 1973 FA Cup final, had earlier shown an interest in the job.

Tana returns from Europe this week and will meet chief executive Jeff Dennis, co-owner David Rodwell and the club's technical manager, Mich d'Avray, to discuss the coaching position. A recommendation will be made to the board next week. The Glory is also interested in re-signing defender David Tarka, now with Nottingham Forest, and midfielder Jamie Coyne, who is with Dutch club Den Haag.

Meanwhile, McMahon is among the personalities being pursued to speak at the Glory's re-launch at Members Equity Stadium on February 4. Former England internationals Tony Adams, Peter Reid and Matthew Le Tissier have also been targeted.

The Glory will unveil a new name and logo at next month's gala event

Can you read anything into that?

McMahon will be there to speak. How would he feel if he wasnt selected as coach?

Where can I say I told you so :D

Delighted with that news - not only is he someone a lot of people will know, his coaching record is respectable. A great coup for Perth and for the A-League.

And on name changes, Queensland Lions are set to make an announcement next week regarding their new name.

Alan Vest Appointed as Assistant Coach

Perth Glory Media Release - 27 January 2005

Perth Glory has slotted into place the final piece of its coaching jigsaw by securing the services of Alan Vest for a second stint as assistant coach.

Vest was assistant to Mich d’Avray during the club’s amazing three year run in the old NSL when two Grand Finals and two Premierships were won, with Glory smashing records in terms of the margins by which titles were won.

“Alan is a fantastic acquisition for the club and will complement the club’s Technical Manager, Mich d’Avray and new Head Coach Steve McMahon very well,” said Chief Executive Officer Jeff Dennis.

“He was a key part of the club’s on-field success in the old NSL and his experience and knowledge of Australian and Asian football will stand us in good stead.”

Vest is a former captain of New Zealand, adding his experience to that of Mich d’Avray and former England international and Liverpool great Steve McMahon.

“We have taken time to make these appointments because we wanted to get them right. Now the club is well-placed to launch into the new era of Australian football” said Mr Dennis.

PROFILE
Halewood born Steve McMahon was Kenny Dalglish's first signing as Liverpool manager in September 1985.
A former Everton ball boy, who graduated through the ranks at Goodison to captain the Blues during the early eighties, McMahon's signature was first sought after by the Reds two years previous.

Not wanting to risk the wrath of the Evertonians he opted instead to join Aston Villa but failed to settle in the Midlands and, a month into Liverpool's momentous double winning season of 85/86, Kenny Dalglish paid £350,000 to acquire his services.

A fine striker of the ball, he scored many memorable goals during his time at Anfield and in one of his early games for the Reds he famously hit the back of the net in a memorable 3-2 Merseyside derby success.

Although he at first he vied with Kevin McDonald for a regular first team place at Anfield, making 23 appearances as the League and FA Cup was won, his combative midfield play was something Liverpool had lacked since the departure of Graeme Souness and the following season saw him fully establish himself in the number eleven shirt.

With quality players around him, McMahon excelled. Strong in the tackle and a fine passer of the ball, he was instrumental during the unforgettable 17th title triumph in 1987/88. International recognition also came his way and after winning another championship medal in 1990 he was selected in Bobby Robson's World Cup squad for Italia '90.

Injury forced him to miss half of the 1990/91 season and following the arrival of Graeme Souness as boss in 1991 McMahon's days at Anfield were numbered. Manchester City paid £900,000 for him, and at the time it seemed good business for a 30 year old. However, finding a replacement was not easy and in the prevailing years he was sorely missed.

After hanging up his boots he embarked on a career in management, starting at Swindon Town, and he is currently boss at Blackpool.

From the SMH:

In other A-League news, Swiss defender Remo Buess has accepted a two-year deal with the Queensland Lions. Buess, 27, who will seek an immediate release from FC Zurich, is to report for pre-season training in Brisbane in March.

The New Zealand Knights have been too slow off the mark in offering terms to All Whites striker Brent Fisher, who this week accepted an offer from German second-division club Energie Cottbus. Fisher, who has been playing with Manly United in the NSW Premier League, said: "It's been a dream come true to play professionally in Europe, so I'm really looking forward to getting over there and hopefully scoring a few goals."

Queensland FC

At least it's not as bad as the NZ Knights.. Do people really need catchy nicknames to get them through the door?

I agree, that's an absolutely TERRIBLE name....
Its like "What's the most original most football-sounding name thats never ever been used before by any other team? ... the KNIGHTS! Of course!"
:(

Ahh, thats just the way it is here in "Football is not the #1 sport" world. Like the USA, Canada and NZ, here in Australia most sports follow the following template: City name followed by nickname, nowadays thankfully followed by "FC".

I dont care, they're still likely to be crap.

You're too right. Worst case scenario: we end up like the USA where each capital city has five teams, one for each sport, each totally indistinguishable from the other: Sydney Swans, Sydney Kings, Sydney Roosters, Sydney..Vikings and Sydney ...Broncos?
So much for each sport having its own unique culture.....

Yeah, not much of a fan of American sporting culture am I ... (is there any culture in American sport ...? )

Queensland Lions sign Victorian

QUEENSLAND yesterday became the latest club to snare a Melbourne player for the A-League, signing midfielder Massimo Murdocca for two years.

Murdocca clinched the deal after impressing Lions coach Miron Bleiberg in a 10-day trial.

"I really like it up there -- they've showed interest from the start and I was always going to go up there for a look whether or not Melbourne Victory showed any interest," Murdocca said.

He will play out the first month of the Victorian Premier League with Fawkner.

Hoo boy, where do I start. Well first I think I should stop laughing.

Nope, still going.

Ah, there we go *smirking*.

If this is true, they will absolutely be the worst named team in Australia sporting history...bar none. Read my response on the standunited.org site.

Ah crap.....I'm laughing still!!

The World Game

Queensland's new A-League football team is set to "roar" into the fledgling national competition.

The Queensland Roar, which maintains a close link to the club's former identity, has emerged a firm favourite from a short list of seven names ahead of the season launch.

The club was forced to change names from the Queensland Lions in order to avoid potential clashes with sporting neighbours and triple AFL premiers Brisbane Lions.

Roar, Cyclones, Suns, Lions, Queensland FC, Pride and Bush Pigs are believed to be the names short-listed by the club.

Roar, a breakaway from traditional sporting names, enables the Lions to maintain its history and fan base as well as retain its bright orange strip.

Lions CEO Laurence Oudendyk refused to comment on the new name and logo that will be unveiled to the public at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

"I don't particularly want to put anyone on the right or wrong track a day out (from the announcement)," he said.

But sources close to the club's inner circle believe Roar would come out on top with most of the other names on the list considered too difficult to market to a wider Queensland audience.

The Townsville Crocodiles were known as the Suns from 1993 until copyright laws forced the change in 1998 while Pride is the name of the NSW women's soccer team.

Queensland FC and the Lions are both hardly original and the Bush Pigs would prove a hard sell for the club's marketing staff.

It is believed the Cyclones name gave the Roar the biggest run for its money.

Flashy Korean midfielder Tae Young Shin is expected to be the first player to sign with the "Roar" after impressing coach Miron Bleiberg during the opening round of the Silver Boots pre-season competition.

Shin, a former Korean international, will form part of a potent midfield that also includes dynamic youngsters and Australian under-20 stars Matt McKay and Massimo Murdocca.

Shin's signing will take the number of players in Bleiberg's squad to 12, with eight spots - including that of a marquee player - still available.

All eight clubs involved in the A-League are working within a $1.5 million salary cap.

Oudendyk believed the salary cap was a necessary evil in order to make the league a success during its infancy.

"I think it's necessary in the start-up year for the league," he said.

"It can be, and they're saying it will be, increased in future seasons."

"But to start the league up I think it's also important that we spend money on marketing and getting people to games, not just blowing it on players' salaries."

Before you criticise Queensland Roar, just contemplate a team called the Bush Pigs in our premier football competition.

It's confirmed, Queensland Roar is the most ridiculous name in Football (apart from 'Real Salt Lake')
