Let's look at the game. Ablett is clearly more skillful then Crowley. Crowley hangs on to Abletts arm all night. Every now and then Ablett gets a kick.

When ablett does get a kick he his put down to the ground behind the ball 5 times out of 10. All of which he doesn't get a kick for

Yes. Now that is correct (or closer to correct) as opposed to some of the tripe a couple of pages ago. As for Crowley I would not say he beat him. Nullified and negated but had similar amount of disposals and the same amount of goals.

What I think you mean to say is that given their comparitive skill levels - for Crowley to curb ablett's influence and pretty much nullify him and generate an equal output - crowley had a great game.

he didn't flog him - he simply drew level which was still a good result

flogging him would be what cornes and ling do where they keep their opponent to 12 possessions and get it 25 times themsleves

Crowley was applying cheap, rough tactics to Ablett all night. He couldn't beat him on his own terms, so he basically just held onto his jumper all night long and roughed him up whenever possible. When you're constantly going for the man, rather than the football, then you deserve to have free kicks paid against you.

It's bizarre, isn't it? It's great to have rivalries, but it's totally weird to see both Hawthorn and Fremantle supporters hang their hats on beating Geelong and West Coast respectively.

Way to go, judging Ablett on one game. IMO, Ablett showed tremendous restraint last night. I wouldn't have blamed him for turning around and knocking Crowley into next week, a la Barry Hall, but he didn't. Statistics wise, Crowley did his job, but he went outside the spirit of the game to do it IMO. The good taggers like Ling, Cornes and Sewell figure the best way of limiting their opponent's output is making them accountable the other way. In other words, if they have the ball, their opponent doesn't. Crowley was only interested in preventing Ablett getting the ball, not getting it himself.

If by protected you mean his teammates block for him at every opportunity, then you're correct. But if you think he's protected by the men in yellow/red/green, then please give us examples of free kicks Ablett was rewarded last night that he wasn't entitled to. I think you'll be struggling to find one.

You obviously don't live in Perth, all we ever hear about here is the Eagles team of the 90's, Channel 7 still show reply's of the Grand Finals occassionally

Crowleys tactics last night were annoying to watch.
Call ablett a protected species all you like, but when you have crowley grabbing his arm and jumper all the time, the umpires will pay it all day long.

freo tried the same tactics they used to beat west coast last year, getting under the skin of the teams best players to unsettle them, but in the end it all came to nothing.

ablett isnt protected, he just plays the ball. maybe crowley wouldnt be so mediocre if he did the same.
