I probably missed this somewhere, but is Schofield taking the reigns this weekend or?

No Matty Knights is.

Edit: The Mexican Gunslinger beat me to the draw.

Thought knights spoke well in today's presser - was surprised when he said he'd only been over at the club 3-4 months.

If him and schofield missed most of the preseason it's not surprising we haven't seen the changes to gameplan we hoped to have seen (even in spite of the covid/injury chaos).

Does this give Simmo some more time? Probably another year at least.

I also enjoyed listening to Knights, and he couldn't speak any higher of Simmo. I think in the circumstances, with Covid and injury decimation, Simmo could not be doing anymore than what he is. If you don't have players, you can't train, you can't build cohesion, you can't play to a rehearsed game plan. It's time to cut Simmo and the club some slack. Nobody, not even Clarkson, could do anything with our present set of circumstances.

I go back and forth on Simmo, but I'm done with Nisbett.

The club is clearly a mess across basically every department and Nizzy needs to own that.

It's a meme, but in hindsight the Castore cluster**** was emblematic of where we are at as a club. We should have exited that contract the minute they couldn't perform, but we persisted and now we can't even get the numbers right.

Accept mediocrity often enough and eventually that's all you get.

Sadly I think this is accurate.

I listen to The Nest pod with Daniel Garb and Drew Jones (a couple of Fox reporters who are WC nuffies). Jones was saying in the latest one that he's heard from someone at the club that the whole place is a mess at the moment. They speculate what that actually means but yeah it doesn't sound great

I have been condemned by the fanboys for observing that WC have for some years trotted out excuses and victimhood over and over again. Leadership as an element of management must come from the top. Our narratives alone have been clear signals that the leadership has been very poor. The pitiful effort at the start fo 2020 was damning. There has been no redemption.

Cultural change must be a priority and that starts from the top which in it self isa problem - whe taps the CEO and Board on the shoulder. The club management is far too focused on all but success on the field. No point repeating past words. In part this is a local thing where success can come too easy and people are not focused enough on the absolute need to succeed and what must be done to achieve this. It is certainly wider than coach and players.

I am prepared to see Simmo as in some part a victim of the poor club culture (old boys, mediocracy, defending the status quo, failure to bring in quality staff an lead ing thinkers etc) but he must carry some responsibility. In the last 2-3 week he has obviously been given some coaching as the narrative has improved. Interestingly, Knights in his press conference was refreshingly realistic and very positive.

I'm think one of the contributing factors to the club being a mess at the moment, is that we haven't handled the reduced soft cap as well as other clubs. We were arguably one of the more well resourced clubs in the AFL prior to the pandemic led decision to reduce the soft cap by $3m, and haven't dealt with the reduced resources, additional work loads, player development, player access/love/welfare as well as other clubs.
In addition to this, I have no doubt that the fabric/culture of the club has been affected by the decision to make the cuts we did to the staff we'd had for years to fit within the soft cap. It could be argued that players and staff that were kept on (let alone those that were let go), have struggled with the decision by the board/hierarchy to put wealth/money (that we have) ahead of people, in deciding not to go over the soft cap and pay the tax (we can afford)
From little things big things grow, and I can imagine if I was a player or staff I'd be asking the question (and maybe it was answered internally) why.

Wasn't this the case last year with "Something going on at the club affecting the players" that the woeful application was attributed to?

So we didn't achieve anything is resolving this over the off-season?

Nisbett is currently overseeing the following.

The worst AFL side in the comp
The worst AFLW side in the comp, no improvement in three seasons
The worst merchandise and apparel in the comp. Surely the club finances and overall visibility in the general public have been hit by this terrible decision. No one I know is interested in buying any West Coast gear.
The worst club song in the comp, with a change without consulting his members, showing that he learned absolutely nothing from 20 years earlier with the Ochre. Funny how we were also a basket case in those years.

He surely has to go. Simpson can have a go at the rebuild if he thinks he can do it over a prolonged period (3-5 years).

Lots of people need to go at the end of this year: Nesbitt, O'brien, the strength and conditioning team, the medical team, and arguably Simpson

But they wont. We seem to value tenure and stability above all things

I have resigned myself to Simpson seeing out his contract

Fortunately the fan boys are posting less, or not at all. Which allows for reasonable discussions without condemnation. I’m sure with time the fan boys will admit they’ve been wrong for a long time, but I think many are using alternative accounts.

Agree knights presented excellently and appeared more confident and positive than Simpson has of late. Easy when you don’t have to do it every week admittedly.

Disagree that Simpson could not be doing anymore. Something clearly is not right between coach and player dynamic, and there’s plenty of fair direct criticism of team selection, tactics, etc. proof will be in the pudding though. A vastly improved performance across the board with a new coach, new message and new tactics could make a difference. Guarantee that knights is coaching for a win and another crack at a coaching position. If everyone is as lackluster and shit as they have been for weeks, I’ll cut Simpson more slack but I’m expecting eagles to come out hard. Neale will get a hard tag, I’d tag Bailey too he goes under the radar. Danniher out means cameron will be the go to. Surely he doesn’t let rich have 30 uncontested possessions across half back, and Ryan at full forward will be a difficult match up - need to take Andrew’s away like teams do with McGovern. We should be in it for most the match, especially if Brisbane think the game is won

I thought Knights carried and presented himself very well at the presser.

Confident, assured very much in control of the presser and surroundings, genuine in his narrative, he didn't avoid or shirk any of the ticklish questions.

I could not help but be very impressed with his presentation. :thumbsu:
