Sadly there are plenty of miserable sods on this board taking away the success of the coach of 2018.

I don’t think anyone is doing that. There is simply no hiding from the fact that since that great win in September 2018 the team has slowly spiralled their way down. Other clubs dealt with Covid so can’t use that as an excuse. Why has the group fallennaway so dramatically in such a short time frame.
The coach will be asking the players why, we the supporters are asking the coach why.
Not sure how that could be deemed to taking away the flag of 2018.

Huh?

I don't even have to dig more than five minutes to find the following quotes. If I did a proper dig through the board for people discrediting Simmo's role in the 2018 flag I'd have a chance of breaking the BigFooty character limit.

I’d say more Mitchell and player driven desire then

Don Pyke and Sam Mitchell were there in those successful years, both are or were head coaches in AFL. I am certain that if either of them were head coach instead of Simpson WC would have won at least 2 grand finals and been in a much better spot currently than they are.

Was just gonna say this. 2018 is firming up to all be on mitchell

Simpson is a woeful coach. It was Pyke in 2015 and Mitchell in 2018

I’ve said it many time Mitchell was the coach that earned us the 2018 premiership, the sooner Simmo is moved on the better.

Ok fair enough. Always going to be some.

I think people are quite angry that we had a star-studded post-premiership team and we never lived up to our own expectations: 1 more? Dynasty? Another GF?
Some of the anti-Simpson stuff on here is because fans are scratching their heads with no real answers and the most likely, visible target is the coach. Can't blame them, can you?

You also mention Pyke/Mitchell comments: those might be coincidental, or true. We'll never know.

We are all just crystal ball gazing here and any of our opinions could be wrong. Maybe Simpson will get sacked next week. But i am expecting we won't win more than maybe one more game this year, or maybe no more wins, and Simpson will still be there at years end. You can just tell by all the things being said by the senior players and Nisbett etc that the entire club has bought into the Covid excuse. Once they get past the first couple of sentences and the usual cliches and disclaimers the next thing they always go to mentally and say is the raft of Covid excuses. They all think none of them bear any responsibility for this.

But i think come the start of next year Simpson will have half a season to show massive improvement. Not necessarily in terms of a certain number of wins. But in terms of we need to competitive in 80% plus of our games, have the game still be alive come the 4th quarter and lose by no more than 4 goals or so. If we have half or more of our games are beltings and are over at half time or before in the first half of the season next year then he will be sacked.

Too true. On Mitchell and Pyke I take the stance the coach is ultimately responsible for results. So matter what part someone else played, it was under Simmo's umbrella and Simmo gets the kudos. No ifs, no buts, that's how the game works.

I think Simmo and the club have that in their heads but if we keep getting beaten by 10 every week and then there's a 17 goal loss, I think something will give. Maybe he survives the year if it's just 10-12 goal losses and doesn't have a real big one.

Next year isn't about winning (because no matter who is coaching, we will be bottom 4), but he has to show a different game plan and more contested ball. This is going to be hard because he's going to have a mix of non-AFL standard players, young players, and older players who are completely confused about the balance between contested ball and zoning off.

I just can't see a situation where he gets a new contract.

I think a big concern is the inability, proven over a long period now - as 2019 was also rife with it - of Simmo to get the team up for consecutive games.

I was pretty happy with last week's game. Melbourne are a much, much better footy side than us at present but the 22 blokes who ran out had a proper crack.

This week it was back to jogging, guarding grass and a lot of half hearted arm thrown out tackles. We didn't defend. Sure getting over 40 points was nice but I think any other side in the league would have beaten the team GWS put out. We got put to the sword by 9.goals.

Why can't our players front up for blocks of committed footy at a time? Good teams have the odd off day for sure, it seems impossible for any group to stay laser focussed for 22 rounds but WC are basically the complete opposite of the desired ratio.

I have no doubt that every first grade ammos player holds themselves and their team mates to a higher standard than what is currently accepted as the norm at Lathlain.

I suspect the guarding grass thing has manifested itself after 8 years of being trained how to guard grass. It's not only proving hard to train out of them, but as soon as things get too hard players just go back to what is easy for them - guarding grass. We also have no real visibility on how much the game style being taught now differs from the old one? Is it a slight move or major move? The smaller the move away, the harder it is to break those bad habits (or habits that worked in 2018 but don't work now).

A new coach will be able to relieve any confusion with the players.

On playing well week in, week out. Even with a new coach this is going to take years. It's typical of an AFL team who are young and bottom 4, but even more so for us because we play interstate every second week. There's a rough pattern in all of the Eagle's flags (that typically holds true for the interstate teams);

bottom 4 - but drafting and get games into legs
bottom 4 - but drafting and get games into legs
bottom 4 - but drafting and get games into legs
bottom 4 - but drafting and get games into legs
10-12 - starting to play ok
top 8 - playing ok but can't win away from home. Acquire those final jigsaw piece players

The final frontier - when we start winning consistently away from home. Never happens until we are bona fide flag threats. It's at that point where we know we're in with a real chance of winning the big one.

Because we're an interstate team, it's going to take a long time to find real game to game consistency.

IMO still another thing that was there before Simmo. Our premiership years are littered with poor performances on the road be it SCG, GMHBA, GABBA, or Whitten oval and Waverley back in the day.

What Simmo has to himself is the horrible home record. No coach, even the worst we’ve ever had, with the worst teams have been so pathetic playing at home. Winning against the eagles in Perth used to be considered hard, now it’s a formality

Yeah thats pretty true the losses at home have been horrid. However 2008 (which is the year I think is most comparable to current) we went 4 and 8. Had 3 losses of over 12 goals including Bomber Thompsons munchies sandwich game.

Bottom 4 for 4 seasons, then a 10-12 finish has never happened in our history?? We’ve never missed finals for more than 3 seasons in a row? So the formula doesn’t quite work. It’s more like bottom 4 for 2 years, then shoot up the ladder and make finals when we’re probably not quite ready, due to a good home ground advantage. Stagnate in the bottom half of the 8 for a few years, before making a push for top 2. Then win a flag, stagnate again around the bottom half of the 8 for a season or few, and fall away badly. Repeat.

He had a 75% winning record at Subi and has got a 67% winning record at Optus. Prior to this year that was 74%.

I wasn't being exact. I don't retain the exact stats in my head, but you get the gist. Not sure where we went after the Judge years and Woosha years but there was a couple of years down near the bottom where we were not competitive. The main point I was making was about winning regularly away from home. We only do it when we hit the top 2 or 3 and in the flag window.

This highlights the silver lining of 2022 season. In previous rebuilds, we've fallen off a cliff and grabbed top talent from being bottom 4 for 2 seasons. Without this year, we might have tread water finishing 10-14 for 4 or 5 years (Freo is a good example of this). Could mean that we get out the other side without the elite talent to jump into top 4.

The ideal scenario over the next few years is finish last this year, bottom 4 next year (with improvement to competitiveness, fitness and game style) and then be pushing around top 8 in 2024.
