We’re onto the assistant coach part of the lifecycle. Beautiful thread this.

Someone tag me when we get to the “Simmo’s too soft, never goes hard on any of them” section of the thread.

Then when someone brings up instances of players leaving training in tears, please make sure I’m looped in on the “Simmo’s clearly lost the group” section.

See you all every week until 2025.

Sounds like something an inside bull fanboy would say.

Did you know that Will Schofield said that Sam Mitchell is a good coach?

Sack Simmo.

All i really want to see from Simpson is next time our core group of leaders/senior players consistently underperform, he picks a big name, and drops him. No resting, no "injury", straight omission.

He would only have to do it once or twice to the team for the message to get through

Example:
*Jack Darling: Omitted

"Jack has been performing poorly and we have sent him back to the WAFL to work on a few things. He is under no illusions as to what is required of him and once that has been addressed we look forward to welcoming him back to the senior side"

Rest of the team: Woooaaahhhh!! F*ck! :flushed:

All that demonstrates is this: selection, as a senior player, is not immediately afforded. Once some real selection standards are in place, there will be some real selection pressure. Your senior players should be held to a higher selection standard then your kids and the guys on the periphery. And that has always been a problem for Adam, swapping out the guys on the fringes, whilst retaining our "leaders" irrespective of how they perform

The man can coach, you don't need win a flag by accident. But his "credits in the bank" selection criteria has gone on for way too long and the rot is starting to set in

You forgot about the “Simmo doesn’t drop senior players” stage.

The main issue with that approach is having youth coming through that can exert pressure on those senior players to want to perform.
You drop JD to the WAFL, ok who is coming in to replace him and is that person going to do well enough to make JD go more than half arsed in the WAFL before he's brought back?

Our WAFL representation isn't even up to WAFL standards - look at the score board. Injuries have, yes played a part, But lack of quality depth is the issue. This is the cost of past good form and less that high strandard list management.

At some stage we have to ask how much the perceived "lack of depth" is actually lack of development occurring at the dogs breakfast we call a reserves team

And the fact that we have to field ammos players.

Simmo has no responsibility for anything, only our successes. I look forward to reading the next pile of horse s**t!

Simpson deserves credit for leading us to our flag. Not all of it because there was plenty of help from all areas of the club for that to happen

Conversely, he also deserves blame for leading us into our current hole. Again, not all of it because there’s been plenty of other failings in all areas of the club, plus some shit luck beyond anyones control, that’s put us in that hole

To get out of it, Simpson and others around the club, need to improve but it won’t be overnight and there’ll be some more pain ahead

And people, perhaps even Simpson eventually, will need to be moved on for that improvement to occur

Does Simpson have half of next season to turn this team around or even more time? Surely if we are languishing down below next season in the first half of the season his job will come under major pressure like Buckley's was last season. Despite his contract.

Last night's crowd was the biggest for an AFL game this season at Perth Stadium meaning ours was probably during J.K's send off. Crowds will stay away with more of the same next season, when the crowds don't come it usually starts to affect the coaches standing.

Our saviour is contracted until the end of 2025, so he is unlikely to be moved on next year, even if we are 0-11.

I assume he is on good coin also so we would be looking at a 1.5mill plus payout.

Yep he’s one of Will Schofield’s opinions.

Though he was just one of a dozen coaches among 40 players, Schofield was full of praise for Mitchell’s influence, declaring he was the best assistant he played under in 14 years of AFL football.

“Put it this way, we wouldn’t have won in 2018 without Sam Mitchell as an assistant coach,” Schofield said to foxfooty.com.au on Wednesday.

“If you asked any player who was at West Coast in 2018 they would speak very highly of Sam Mitchell. He’s highly intelligent with a high footy IQ. He’s a great educator who can teach young and senior players. He’s a direct communicator.
Is this the same Sam Mitchell whose team just got hoovered to the tune of 68 odd points???

I think you'd give him at least a couple of years to turn it around wouldn't you?
Sure, I agree, but if he is responsible for us winning the 2018 G.F as said by some on here, would you not expect more.
Call me crazy but maybe Simmo had a hand in it......Big time?

Sam Mitchell has a very good football brain and you could see that in his playing days. He was also a valuable addition to our coaching ranks in 2018 and we’re worse for his absence

None of that is controversial

Personally, I think he’ll make a very good senior coach. However, there’s a huge gap between being an assistant and being a senior coach. There’s far more scrutiny and your people management skills, or lack thereof, have a large bearing on whether or not coaches successfully make the leap

From the outside he seems to have a fairly abrasive personality. The type that will whack gatorade bottles out of players hands. It’s the sort of thing that can go either way but I think he’ll land on the right side

I mean it's possible that Simmo and Mitchell both played a part in it right? Mitchell seems to be held in high regard by people who played under him, I'm sure Simpson is held in high regard by plenty that have played under him.
I'd expect a first year coach who started off with a pretty shit team to take at least a year or two to right the ship.
