Todays game was so similar to our hawthorn mcg games. Ball lives in our defensive half and we just bang it out to outnumbered players or uncontested opposition on the flanks and wings.

What is ours?

What is Hawthorn's?

Plan B isn't always as obvious as putting Gov in the forward line, it could be slight change at stoppages or in the middle.

I agree.

But then explain why M Brown was picked for that diabolical EF and shoved into a FP??

Yes, Mitch Brown was the difference in the end. Brophy/Colledge/whoever definitely would've kicked the 7 goals to win us the game.

The fact remains, the blame isn't on any single players shoulders, it was the entire team that fell down that night.

I'll be honest, it's been a while since the EF and I don't remember the rationale behind the choice, but it's long gone now. Simpson surely had a sensible reason behind it, but I don't really like dwelling on a terrible game I've already erased from my mind.

This thread is exactly the type of thread I always love to see when its "to the losers board" time. These kinds of after game melts do nothing but put bigger smiles on lurkers faces. Hi docker fans, highlight of your season right here.
The melts are relatively calm and measured IMO

Don't want to be too pessimistic on the back of one loss, but teams who rebound at pace like Adelaide will tear us to pieces if we keep giving up the corridor.

Dustin Martin with 20 clearances. A good coach doesn't let this happen. Nothing changed all game, dusty could just have the ball on a yoyo.

20 clearances with a cracked cheekbone. We don't have anyone capable of that. Makes some of our efforts look piss weak, which they were. Out and out shocking performance from almost everyone.

Talk about overreaction. We had an off day. Tigers are not a bad side and got hot. Obviously we would all like to have won the game, and there will be some questions asked, but it was hardly a deplorable effort.

We are just not that good. We are probably a top 6 side, maybe top 4. I defy anyone to find a coach to improve us enough to be a serious contender.

We're still 2-1. You can't win them all. I'd be more concerned if we drop the next two against Sydney and Hawthorn, teams we should be consistently beating if we are serious. Richmond are improving and it was a tough and close wet weather slog that someone had to lose.

Well it seems our plan is to play the boundary lines so it's not like we give up the corridor it's just there to be taken, I don't know why we have changed to playing the boundary lines this year.

This is not intended as a thread to react to today's loss.

If people read what I'm saying carefully, I've been concerned with our stagnation for some time and think Simpson has regressed as coach since he started.

Good to see we're not over-reacting to a close road loss
Agree with you.

I don't think anyone would have thought after Round 3 the angry mob would be chanting Sack Simo instead of Sack Dimma. Long way to go yet, the Eagles will be a force in 2017, cool your jets West Coasters.

Nobody, certainly not me, is saying sack Simmo

Can we title this "The Melt Thread"?

Having said that, I don't disagree that we should have some discussion about the coaching. We are a soft team. We really are.

But that could be more about the playing group than the coach. Coaches provide the game plan and other instructions, but the leadership group should be setting the standards for aggression at the contest and the "how to go about it" on the field.

Need more tapping to advantage, shepherding after giving off a handball, and guts in the big moments.

Without intentionally singling him out, this is a game Darling could've grabbed by the scruff of the neck (while JK had to deal with one of the best fullbacks in Rance). He didn't. Where was his lead to Gov when Gov got the ball at CHB and ran through the middle? Why can a man of such immense physical strength and with good pace never seem to get space from his opponent?

There's a broader issue though than the lack of performance by "big game players" in those "big moments".

It's ground ball nous. We lack it. We severely lack it compared to about 8-10 other sides.
This is what happens when you recruit a bunch of "good character" guys, especially when we focus on drafting midfielders who are either flankers or don't have it in them to play hard contested footy.

It's not an off day, it's an ongoing issue dating back to last year and even further as far as the coaching goes. Simpson has continually preached flexibility in his players and then shown absolutely none in his coaching. He is stubborn to fault with his selection policy, nearly always gives the veterans preference over the younger guy, even when they are in worse form or lack fitness, leading to a lack of development in the younger guys.

I disagree, it was a very poor effort. The players have looked like they've been half asleep for most of the first three games. There's no run, we're stagnant when we've got the ball and not running hard enough when we don't. Our midfield is the slowest of all time and most of the players are playing with no heart.
