Does Adelaide have a culture of "near enough is good enough"?

Let's be honest, they haven't been a real flag threat for a long time.

2006 was their best chance but they didn't even make the GF.

They seem to be the team that always plays finals but is merely making up the numbers.

What do Adelaide fans think of this and do they have to bottom out to become a genuine flag threat?

Always been a good team, but never good enough. And never bad enough to really bottom out, and get some very good first round picks.

Us South Aussie teams are like that. Comes with the territory.

 So the ladder is wrong? Port isn't bottom four at the moment?

You have to give the Adelaide fans credit for hanging in there and not hitting the buses early tonight, but did anyone see the nutter on the fence madly cheering an Adelaide goal late in the game as though they'd just hit the lead? Sport, you're losing by 10 goals. Don't know if that's a sign of fans thinking near enough is good enough.

It is hard in this league to rise up the ladder when you consistently make finals. That pretty much sums it up. We are all aching for a premiership but you can't buy one these days and we aren't incompetent enough to get the rewards that are given to teams that are.

I really don't think premierships are the measure of a club's success anymore given the current system. Consistent finals participation and strong off field performance (crowds & profit) are.

Didnt stop Geelong Sydney Port or West Coast in recent years. Or Brisbane. Or Essendon before that. Barely a top three pick between them all.

The teams with the bulk of the high draft picks and priority picks actually havent won any flags.

I would hate it as a supporter if we bottomed-out!

I think what alot of you Vics dont know that we have a lot of good youngsters in our squad, but are very young and need to be developed and will take another 2 years before we are top 4 material.

If we had the culture of a Richmond or Freo or some of these teams we would be bottom 4.

If you compare our list currently with other clubs in the AFL, we would be bottom 4.
Just look at the players Richmond and Freo have, more talent than us.
But we have a culture whereby whichever player is playing for our club no matter how good they are, we expect to win, and that culture means we play finals nearly every year, but cant match it with the top 2-3 teams in the comp, until those young players gain experience.

They played a side who belts 9/10 teams.

...and beat 34 out of 36 of them!!! (I know not all of them were beltings).

The Crows will be fine. Despite the final score tonight, Adelaide didn't play that badly, they were just up against a team that's less than forgiving of mistakes and missed opportunities.

Thats a complete cop-out. Adelaide have allegedly been rebuiding for 5 years and you have nothing to show for it. Your best players are still the same old names - Burton, McLeod, Edwards, etc . You have a list of under 21's that might be good, but every team in the competition can make similar claims. I heard that line five years ago about the Crows 19 year olds. Where are they now? Apart from Bock and Thompson - who you traded in - you barely have a mid aged player worth anything at all.

True..but Port won a flag in the same time Adelaide did from starting in the comp..7yrs.Geelong didnt have first rd picks, they traded most in or get the advantage of father/son rulings (scarlett & ablett)..try getting those in SA.There was a great article in Sportsbeat (distributed around the amateur league) where it showed that being consistent finals contributers cost you dearly.West Coast & Port have showed that this year,as has Essendon. When Adelaide has ca$h to spend when the older guys retire,we have an open chequebook.Sydney has already proved that, with the Fevola talk. They rely bigtime on their 30+ players.

We havent been rebuilding for 5 years, this is our first year. Last year was the end for that squad and attempt for premiership. Now we need another 2 years to again be consistent top 4 material.
Mcleod and Edwards have not been our best players either this season.
Thompson, JCock, Bock, Vince, Rutten have been our best.
Bock was not traded in either. Thomo was traded in because Steinglein left.
I think most of the comments you have made actually could be said about your club. Collingwood and Crows are in a very similar position right now. Not Quite good enough, but in 2-3 years should be top 4.

If that makes you sleep at night.

What a load of garbage. We play football for premierships - are we going to remember Adelaide making the finals year after year and saygee wiz - thye were better than those teams that won the flag.

You can finish mid table and still get good players. The crows have some - Porplyzia is the best - amazing skills, but wait until the old guys all go - then the test will be there for the kids.

Thompson held Melbounre to ransom cuase he wanted to go home - ala Stenglein.

Bock, Rutten and Burton are all quality.

Reilly, Doughty etc. are just average.

Knights would be quality if his skill improved. Still the same old problem for Adelaide - no key forward. Sellar and Tippett are the hopes.

Dunno, the AFL as the draft stands now rewards failure.

The biggest problem I see for Adelaide is that they haven't found and developed any up and coming matchwinners. They are still relying on the same blokes week in week out that they were 5 years ago for the most part.

They have some very handy young players, but none have jumped out at this point and had us all going wow! at some stage in their careers. I certainly wouldn't suggest that there aren't up and comers at the Crows who aren't capable of becoming elite, but I would suggest that they aren't thick on the ground.

The pride of South Australia is going to have a lot of thinking to do in the next 3 to 4 months with regards to their list, because they are in no mans land right now, and I reckon that's the worst place to be in footy.
