1997 started with more: Brett James, Darren Jarman, Matt Connell, Mark Bickley it's now up to you

i think most would be satisfied with the flexibility that Blight demanded from his players.

Must be able to play midfield, half forward, half back.

Nicks just stays with the same foundation and doesn’t demand any flexibility from his players. When plan A isn’t working, type plan an abd that’s how McLeod et el go their opportunities.

None of our young players are even getting an opportunity right now.

I really don't understand us starting with that same midfield combo the entire time

What is the purpose? Do we think they will turn into an elite AFL unit?

Do we think a few turns at the centre bounces will ruin Berry and Pedlar's careers? At the moment they are only learning how to be the long bail out marking option up the line

It's all about continuity. Our senior players thrive on it.

There's a time when they have to realise this senior group don't have it and never actually did.

just not sure the Crows board can handle 2 or 3 more years of losing and sticking fat with Matthew Nicks.

Agree we need to have that transitional period, and consistent winning won’t happen until we do.

Hence why Matthew Nicks could become a Robert Shaw.
Will be the 1st crows coach to not make finals 2 years in a row and keep his job.

yeah, agree but disagree.

Laird should be moved back to the half back/back pocket. Even if it’s for 50% of a game to give opportunities for the inexperienced players.

Sloane a forward line. Same reason

I think both can play quality footy and have a long term future as a crow, and can help the team, but not as full time key midfielders.

We shouldn't have to wait that long, by year three there should start to be the early makings of a team for the future. If he can't do that then he has to go. He won't though unless we get a new football Director.

Our team selection and list management over the last few years is biting us now. We are relying on the kids to come on fast.

Essendon have 21 players with over 50 games experience we have 15.
Our 15 are, MacKay, Walker, Sloane, Talia, Smith, Brown, Laird, Lynch, Seedsman, Crouch, Kelly, Keays, Milera, Murphy, O'Brien.

How many would be best 22 at a top 4 club?

I posted this on the GBU thread yesterday but I think it has some relevance here.
From the above 15 players the over 30's are MacKay, Walker, Sloane, Lynch. Next year Talia, Smith & Seedsman will turn 30.

We need to get a balance of experience vs youth correct, if we select too much youth we run the risk of turning into Gold Coast at its worst.
If next year we run Crouch, Sloane, Laird and Keays as our main midfield mix and play the future midfielders on flanks we are taking the club in the absolute wrong direction.

We desperately need speed and elite skill at our CBA's.

We should always look to rotate at least one of our junior midfielders at every centre bounce - Berry, Pedlar, Hately even Fogarty etc from time to time with the other 2

There's still 10 guys of more from the GF.
At some stage after camp, Burton etc they needed to stand up and haven't.
I'm talking more about Smith, Kelly, Mackay, Brown, Seedsman to appoint.
When games are in the balance to show inspiration, poise and got decision making.

And however poorly we perform, "Imagine how much worse it would have been without those guys in there."

"There were X amount of players who were worse" is the one that gets rolled out here a lot. Never mind that those players were in peripheral roles or had bugger all TOG.

Delist: Gibbs, Stengle, Parnel

I would seriously consider giving Ben Davis a 1 year extension to see how he goes as a half back. His level of improvement in the past 8 weeks has been exceptional, and he didn’t look out of play Friday night, unlike his very first game against Geelong.

Trade: I think we could be very active this trade period and trade a few players. Ether as a Free Agent match, or as a contracted player we are looking to move on. would put these players on the trade table and see what attracted any interest - Jake Kelly, Himmelberg, McPherson, and Ben Keays.

I would not trade any player just to trade, but I think we should be looking at ways to fast track our improvement and get the best players in the best spot. Who has the biggest ceiling for improvement and what sort of return would we get.

Matt Crouch should become a Free Agent and gain us anything between pick 5 and 20. Basically the same as his brother, with Berry, Schoenberg and Pedler, we have his game style covered.

Kelly to Collingwood
Himmelberg and Keays to Gold Coast
McPherson to a Victorian club

Retire: Talia and MacKay

keep: Lynch but he would be a training body to keep the standards high and play SANFL as a senior body.
I stopped reading after delist Parnell and extend Davis for a year.

yikes.

The thing is, we absolutely LOVE Ben Davis

I'd wager that he is the most admired character at the club

Everything about him other than his football is absolutely first class. We'd value him as a great example to our young players and someone who's value far exceeds on-field output.

I like your thinking but not even the incompetents in the AFL would allow us to delist Gibbs and Stengle twice.

I was under the impression that we now have the maximum list size of 44. Murray replaced Gibbs, Parnell replaced Stengle.

Next……..

Give him an off field role and let him play at Sturt with his brother.

Despite Friday night’s abomination, looking at our current list and potential inclusions from the draft and trade period this year I’m still excited about what we can become.

A few guys *could* have a decent impact (/show improvement) at AFL level in 2022 after a strong pre-season, including McAsey, Worrell, Murray, Hately, Cook, Gollant, Pedlar, Berry, Thilthorpe, Jones, McHenry, Sholl, Hamill, Parnell, Hinge, Fogarty, Rowe, Newchurch.

And the potential for Milera to be back.

I’m crossing all my fingers we can snatch Dylan Stephens in the PSD, get a late first rounder for Crouch and draft Roberts, Jackson/Draper and Murley along with a young tall, small forward and ruck option.
