I find this (likely illegal market manipulation) claim to be a bit dubious, but at the same time it would be hard to disbelieve anything about the lengths that the puppet masters the AFL would go to.
So - an external body is paying an employer to artificially stifle their worker's potential wages?

And none of the workers (or their management) have ever complained?

Seems unlikely, right?

Yes the ex SANFL player just made it up to show off.

And his employer isn’t the SANFL, it’s his club.

Clubs falling in line to the governing body, yes that seems unlikely, right?

Are you sure about that.

I think the SANFl are the employer. Same as the AFL with AFL players.

Each club recieves the Salary Cap from the SANFL who then use that to pay their players.

Player contracts are between the player and club aren’t they? The club is liable to pay out a player if they sack them, not the AFL.

The AFL and the SANFL would provide payments to the clubs but it’s the direct responsibility of the clubs to pay their players.

After Covid I met an ex Glenelg player who went to the country because of the salary cap.

He said the players were trying to get the cap increased and when they reviewed the SANFL books there was a new revenue item which was the AFL paying the SANFL direct to keep the cap down as they didn’t want the SANFL attracting interstate players at the expense of the VFL.
wouldnt shock me in the slightest. the afl says jump, the sanfl asks how high.

About 15 years ago the AFL set really high transfer fees to recruit someone from interstate to stop the exodus of players moving from the VFL to the SANFL that had happened during the 2000's. The SANFL and South Australian football has been chipped away at since the 80's and many of the administrators have moved on from the SANFL to an AFL position, leaving the SANFL weaker in their wake and their personal bank balances looking very healthy. Spineless. Much like the Crows of the past 25 years - minus the brief turn around we had under Walsh.

How’s that relevant when he’s returning to the team and they have to fit his salary plus Lyons and Parnell? That’s pretty big recruits, who has left?

Some recent AFL delisting that SANFL clubs would have to look at former SA lads Jack Hayes and Nathan Kreuger, Ben Patton, Olli Hotton, Jack Bytel and Sam Weideman.

Yes the club pay the players from the money that the afl give them.

Players sign a contract that is co-signed by both the AFL and their club.

It's a tripartite contract where the club agrees to fulfil the traditional role of the employer - payroll, benefits, protections etc.

The AFL is there so they have overarching authority, in case they need to dismiss the player from the league, and also to prevent restraint of trade claims.

That's my understanding from previous times this has come up.

I think any idea that the AFL is bribing the SANFL with new funding to artificially stifle the wages of SANFL footballers because they didn’t want the SANFL attracting interstate players at the expense of the VFL is obviously silly.

Somehow that restraint of trade is happening, and every player manager and club administrator just keeps it quiet, and every journalist chooses to ignore it?

It sounds like SA paranoia.

Far more likely is AFL funding to the SANFL is contingent on them enforcing a salary cap, which is for the good of the entire national game. It's not that the AFL cares about one state-based league over another.

Glenelg follows the Geelong principle of not overpaying players and it has worked with them bringing in recruits who want to be part of a successful program
Nothing better than a bit of farm land in the Glenelg area.

So you agree that the AFL funding the SANFL to keep the SANFL salary cap down is a thing and yet on the other hand you claim everyone would be jumping up and down if it was happening, make your mind up.

So who would be the SANFLs main source of players if they had higher salary cap? Victoria or Queensland?

Chad Wingard

I have no idea how we are fitting him in but he is coming
